Duke Nukem Forever footage, screens surface

Clip shows profanity-spouting hero battling giant aliens, wooing strippers; 3D Realms posts official "goodbye" message thanking supporters.

Last week saw the 12-year Duke Nukem Forever saga come to an ignominious end when 3D Realms shut down. Though still not officially responding to press inquires, the Texas-based developer did post an official farewell over the weekend along with a group shot of its soon-to-be-former employees.

"Goodbye. Thanks for being fans and for all your support," read the brief message from webmaster Joe Siegler, who first confirmed the studio's closure last Tuesday.

The accompanying photo showed that at the time of its closure, 3D Realms employed around three dozen people. Those included several artists who have posted art assets from the game on their personal Web sites in an effort to find new jobs. Shacknews spotted DNF assets on the blogs of artists showcasing alien opponents and desert locales from the game. However, all four former 3D Realms employees had either pulled the art assets or restricted access to their blogs as of press time.

Another former 3D Realms employee also posted a highlight reel showing about three minutes of animation and gameplay footage from Duke Nukem Forever. Besides containing brief nudity and foul language, the trailer shows Mr. Nukem battling several enemies, ranging from pig-faced brutes to the tentacled alien shown above. Several boss battles are also shown, including one in a sports stadium where players must pelt a hulking armored beast with missiles to knock it down and then pry off its antennae to disable it.

[WARNING: Video contains coarse language and brief nudity--viewer discretion is advised.]

Apparently you did miss something RO-nIn187. Cause the king is now dead. They killed him and it took them 12 years to do it..... Duke we the original fans of your great games will forever remember you as the beer chugging, ass smacking, pig stomping, alien ass kicker as you once were. But time hasnt been nice to you duke. Not at all. Goodbye old friend. Sorry it had to be this way.

totally agreed with RO-nIn187; If I had the money, I would support them too. Jesus, 12 years and this; look how it was getting awesome!! "Now I'm really pissed off..."

I love how the "WARNING" advises that the video contains foul language and brief nudity. But they forgot to warn me that the video contains blood and violence too!

I agree with the warning. Lets be ashamed of the human body and language, but not give a crap about extreme violence and killing. I really hate our hypocrisy.

Now I must go back and kill more motherf***ers on COD:MW2 and Demon's Souls.

Did I miss something? A lot of comments claim that they will never play the game, but I couldn't find an official statement that it's been cancelled. DN3D was one of the best shooters ever. And I don't think that 3D Realms worked for 12 years on this title just to let it die. Hell, if I had the money I would sponsor them just to finish this game.

They got alot of this game done. It's too late to release it now but it looked pretty cool. Looks like they captured alot of the atmosphere that made the first one rock.

Could someone give me the link please because I don't see a way to like I can with other gamespot videos.

    ((Wej_accept_it):

"Bah looks old and dated, like it was built on the Doom 3 engine, which was awesome technology in 2004.
    These days though...
    Master Chief>Duke Nukem
    Gordon Freeman>Duke Nukem
    Solid Snake>everyone ))

    -

Pure example of somebody who obviously has never experienced the original Dukes. Really, that's the problem; Duke never dies and people obviously don't know who their messing with. They are just looking at the date of the development cycle, of course they don't even bother to look at the quality, probably because its going to beat games like Hl2 and Halo big time. Don't think so yourself? I'm thinking you don't know the series like I do. All of you trolls just wait. Duke will live on, this masterpiece will come, and when the big man runs out of gum, there will be asses to kick. Its not like all those game of the year awards are just for show.

Also, how the hell can anybody compare Gordon Dreenman to anybody when he doesn't even make any noise? Hell, in Half-Life 2 he didn't even have a character model. -

    Black shadow standing still>Duke Nukem?

    Seriously, start thinking.

The game looks like it is basically done...what's taking so long? I bet that 3D Realms just want their fans to suffer or am I wrong. Personally, I have long since moved on to bigger and better games like Alan Wake and GTA 4. I just hope they make a PS3 version of Alan Wake...it would suck to buy a new console just to play one damn game.

...I remember during DN3D's heyday, when 3D Realms was making a fortune, and literally laughing at John Carmack and team at id when JC was struggling to get the first true 3D engine to work (Quake I). I'll bet that Mr. Carmack remembers that hellish period too, with DN3D rubbing salt in his wounds. I'm a conspiracy theory hobbyist, and I suspect that part of what was behind all of DNF's problems was Carmack getting even...

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! I'll never get to play a remake of the Stadium level!!!!!!!

Still, can you honestly say you're not surprised? 12 years, $12 Dollars and not so much as a screenshot or in game footage until AFTER it's been cancelled? Still doesn't mean the game is doomed. Maybe another development studio will take over and will actually WORK on the game... well, heres hoping.

The reason this game was stuck in development was because they set their standards way too high.

What a bunch of crap. 12 years and this is all they have to show for it? I'm glad they've gone under, and they certainly deserve everything they've got coming to them. I hope they enjoy their unemployment checks, the lazy ****s.

3d realms must of been a very badly run company, to take a game like this and take that long to develop and get paid 12 million and yet never ship a game. They must of been very dis organized, not very professional and badly run.

12 years and $12 Million and they only have 3 minutes of video to show for it, and plenty of test animation included within it. WTF 3D Realms?! Biggest scam in the history of gaming next to Gizmondo.

it's seems like only half of you actually read the article??!!! 3drealms are no more, hence no more duke! now some of you muppets are slating the graphics, game play and "voice acting" of a game which was in a very limited production and will never be released (for now that is)!

either way, duke is a LEGEND, and if you barely or never played the original, YOU can't have an opinion about this! nuff said...

Well, at least I got a chance to play the first one. that was enough for me. I felt like this new installment would have become a HUGE mistake. The scale of enemies was impressive, but with the engine they were using, it seemed a little dated. Let us not mar the greatness that was Nukem with such a potential letdown. It would have felt like an Old Yeller moment had I played "Forever".

At least there's information on this game. 3D realms didn't really reveal jack **** about "their" game, cept "It'll be out when it's done." 12 years later they're bankrupt. I'm glad there's progress on this game.

After 12 years in development, is anyone even looking forward to this game? And if so, why exactly?

The video is pretty underwhelming. 12 years and it looks like a standard shooter with nothing to differentiate itself except that it's Duke Nukem. Yippee. Not one aspect of that video had me thinking "Wow, that looks good", or "Hey, that seems like a new idea". Let's face it, any game that's been 12 YEARS in dev is bound to disappoint upon it's release. Thank god 3Drealms is closed (and hopefully it's true, and not another joke played by the company).

tengen23, I would assume that, had they worked on a game for 12 years with a plan, it could only be played on some MIT or CERN-PCs. Plus they'd have to ship it on 500 GB-Harddrives or somthin

    @CSP2009

Go indie man. To hell with the corporations, conglomerates and take overs. Make the game yourself, learn the skills, publish it on your own. It doesn't take an army of people anymore. Maybe a AAA online MMO with razor graphics would, but still theres alot of potential in indie.
