Originally, Jerry Bruckheimer's The Prince of Persia was to be among the flotilla of summer blockbusters currently moored or en route to box offices around the nation this year. However, last August, the Mike Newell-directed tribute to Ubisoft's Middle Eastern hero was abruptly pushed back a year from its June 19, 2009 release to Memorial Day weekend 2010.

Even before the delay, information on the high-profile film had been limited, with one of the earliest looks being a candid on-set shot of star Jake Gyllenhaal--in Prince garb--walking with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon. Today, however, actual footage of the film has surfaced, courtesy of an ABC interview with Bruckheimer.

The interview, which has been reposted to popular video-sharing site YouTube, features Bruckheimer discussing The Prince of Persia, with action sequences from the film interspersed throughout. Notably, Bruckheimer spared no expense on extras, given that Gyllenhaal is on several occasions shown doing battle with armed guards amid a sea of city dwellers.

The Prince of Persia will also star Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Three and Out), Ben Kingsley (Sexy Beast, BloodRayne), and Alfred Molina (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spider-Man 2). As Dastan, Gyllenhaal will attempt to prevent a nefarious nobleman from obtaining the continuum-controlling Sands of Time. Arterton's character, the princess Tamina, will join him on his quest. The film's screenplay was cowritten by Jordan Mechner, creator of the original 1989 Prince of Persia and its sequels.

They shouldn't have given him a name. Such a legendary character shouldn't have a normal name. I'm fine just calling him "Prince".

I don't think Jerry Bruckheimer would let this movie fail. I think this could be the the first really good Video game movie.

I really want this to work. Prince of Persia is such a great game and the storylines set it up rather well for a movie translation. It really has the potential, lets just hope they do pull it off.

On the bright side, they involved Mechner, so at least the movie plot will be close to the game storylines.

I just played the latest iteration of the PoP games... It was a decent game, I am wondering if they are gunna try and hype this movie up since its postponed another year.
I also agree with Wadah1111, if he does some of the wall moves and platforming from the game, it very well might be a good movie... But then again, it could be a turd too...

I might see this. I loved Sands of Time, but I've never played the other games. Seeing a bit of footage has reassured me somewhat, but I'm not sold yet. Maybe if they put out an impressive trailer.

Traditionally, movie based games and game based movies are expected to disappoint. However, notable exceptions of the former have emerged with Riddick, Spider-Man 2, Wolverine Origins, Star Wars etc. Till date the only game based movie that is sucessful in capturing the essence of the game a bit is Resident Evil. I hope POP makes it to the list, cos the POP franchise remains my favorite in gaming history.

They should really give Jake a Tan before they really film, and have a stubble beard, and more curlier hair, not combed straight.

I totally agree that guy kicks some major @ss and looks like a better fit to play a persian prince. Gyllenhaal's a pretty good actor but he's a bit to pale to play someone who grew up in the desert.

The only good thing Jerry Bruckheimer ever did was the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. And that was only because Johnny Depp made it awesome.

  • FidelSarcastro

    Posted May 12, 2009 12:56 am PT

Well it sounded like it had potential till I saw the name Jerry Bruckheimer... so basically it will probably be some mindless action, fast camera work, over the top CG, huge explosions (even the cammels will explode), paper thin storyline and awkward love story... got it.

As far as Ben Kingsley... well yea he has starred in great moves like Ghandi and Schindlers List but to be fair he has also been in BloodRayne (directed by our good friend Uwe Boll), The Sound of Thunder, The Last Legion and The Love Guru. If the movie is a good solid movie then a good actor will only make it shine even more, if its a stinker no matter who stars it will still be a stinker.

I'm not sure what you mean by referencing the fact that Ben Kingsley was in the movie Species, that is, unless you're trying to say that he is obscure--which I believe is what you are trying to say that no one has seen it and that he is a no body. I'm not trying to bash you or anything, I'm simply trying to figure out the nature of your post. If, perhaps, you have not seen Kingsley in any other movie, search up Ghandi on Imdb.

This looks like a fun, Mummy-style type of movie and will probably be the best video game-to-movie adaption out there, which really isn't saying much in the first place unless you count Advent Children.

Ok... so what? Its not like this movie will be good. They should just stick to making the video game series.
