What we heard: About this time last year, Ubisoft revealed as part of its Ubidays press event that it was at work on a follow-up to Michel Ancel's celebrated 2003 action adventure Beyond Good & Evil. However, aside from a brief trailer (bottom) that appeared to show protagonist Jade and her humanoid pig companion Pey'j stranded along the side of a road, no actual gameplay footage, details, platforms, or release window were revealed.
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo now less than a month away, it appears as if Ubisoft is finally gearing up to offer new details on the cult action-adventure game. Today, a video that looks to be gameplay footage of Beyond Good & Evil 2 made its way onto a number of video-sharing Web sites, including YouTube.
Highly reminiscent of Ubisoft's recent hit Assassin's Creed, the footage shows Jade fleeing from machine-gun-wielding foes through what appears to be an arid city from the first game. Jade is shown leaping from rooftops, ascending walls, and engaging in other parkour-inspired activities in her attempts to evade capture or death. The brief clip concludes with Jade hopping into a flying machine and then cruising away with her assailants in hot pursuit.
The official story: Ubisoft had not returned requests for comment as of press time.
Bogus or not bogus?: Though the footage contains no identifying logos or other marks that one would expect to see attached to an official trailer, its high production values are making this one look not bogus.
However, if this footage does turn out to be Beyond Good & Evil 2, Ubisoft isn't necessarily close to bringing the game to market. Notably, in laying out its projections for its current fiscal year last week, the publisher did not factor the game's release into its financial outlook for the April 1, 2009, to March 31, 2010 period.
