Earlier this week, Bethesda Softworks confirmed that the Games for Windows edition of its third Fallout 3 add-on pack, Broken Steel, was experiencing technical issues rendering it unplayable. With those who purchased the PC edition of Broken Steel reporting widespread installation problems, a Bethesda representative confirmed that the issue was "a games for Windows Live DRM install error," and that Microsoft was working on a fix.

Today, Bethesda confirmed for GameSpot that the fix is in, and Broken Steel is once again available for download on the PC. As for the Xbox 360 edition of the game, Bethesda also said that Microsoft has addressed and resolved issues relating to achievement points gained through Broken Steel not being added to players' gamerscore total.

For more on Broken Steel, check out GameSpot's prelaunch impressions.

I realize Broken Steel is having some problems, but I have not seen this one yet: I just finished downloading Broken Steel and loaded it up with FO3. When I got past the part where you either sacrifice your life or the life of another, it loaded the normal ending, but after that was over it said, "Two weeks later..." And, depending on which route I chose, would put me in this room. There is only one (huge) problem... I could not move at all! I was able to pause the game, and go to 3rd person view, but no other controls worked! I tried loading this a few times and it happened every time. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it??

why would the gamer score not go on the gamer tag?

  • Niccara

    Posted May 12, 2009 2:10 pm PT

@Deathkiller_NL - You wont lose anything.. you dont even have to delete your gamertag. Just sign out and select recover game tag and it will reload the tag from XBL. Just make sure you have signed in recently so the server has your latest achievements.

Got the DLC as did my friends. We all agree that the story should be longer or that there should be new side-quests from other factions/towns. Oh well, at least I got some new armor.

But if I want to do a gamertag recovery process, then I'll have to buy a xbox 360 memorycard so I can make a backup... I don't wanna loose everything you know

  • Niccara

    Posted May 10, 2009 7:08 pm PT

This article fails to mention the fact that gamers who already unlocked the glitched achievements have to go through the gamertag recovery process so that M$ servers can delete those glitched achievements allowing them to be (re)unlocked properly.

Finally. In any case, Bethesda needs to rethink its partnership with Microsoft and consider having more say (read: control) over the publishing of its games.

After hearing how buggy it was, I was tempted not to buy it. I got it on the 6th, and surprisingly haven't noticed any major bugs. Gamerscore worked fine from the beginning.

Btw, everyone talks about the new campaign and all that... but why none menctioned the new "talents" monsters, armor and weapons this third expansion adds?

I'm just saying that because I LOVE my new 3xcannon lasergun ^_^

    @ Twin_Blade_Mike:

Basicly because I didn't spected it to be as terrible translated as it is... I should had done what you say but, for some reason, i wanted to trust bethesda's localization testing this time. Seems it was a mistake.

At least i was able to get Oblivion in full english. For now on i'll check it better because some games are better plñayed with English voices rather than spanish translated.

I swear i'm getting "Brutal Legend" in full english if they try to translate it, for example. Bethesda should do like Capcom and release they games in english and with spanish subtitles, rather that using 6 voices for 300+ npc's

There's no such thing as a perfect machine anyway. Least the GFW crash of BS wasn't as bad as the overall crash of the Pitt expansion. plus, since they already paid for the content, they can at least download it all over again...

You'd be surprised the things that can become an issue if your application and infrastructure programming isn't properly modularized. lol @ Microsoft - go back to college.

its still not added my 30gp for completing death from above so to put simply the issue has not been resolved. i hope i dont have to do the quest again!!!!

all these broken games & dlc make me long for the days of 8-bit titles that came as is. dlc is a double edged sword in the fact it allows developers to fix issues so thay can make deadlines at the same time it seems to encourage lazyness in them as well."screw it we'll patch it later" mentality is a little out of control if you ask me.

  • Lateraliss

    Posted May 8, 2009 6:37 am PT

    @iowasevenk

I do the same thing, and have absolutely no problems with fallout 3, other than the occasional crash from the mods I installed. As far as I can see the problems is completely on microsoft's end, and GFWL should be thrown in the trash.

  • blaskowicz

    Posted May 8, 2009 5:59 am PT

I just wish they would put all the DLC available in Steam as well. As I live in Brazil, GFWL does not make the packs available to me. Being unable to explore the whole of the game will definitely influence my decision to buy other games from Bethesda.

  • lukemularczyk

    Posted May 8, 2009 5:46 am PT

why is it only bethesda that seems to have such issues with GFWL, all the other companies can use it fine?

Everyone saying MS ballsed it up seems to forget that other games have been using the system fine!

  • Twin_Blade_Mike

    Posted May 8, 2009 5:45 am PT

@Warlord_Irochi: That sounds like it sucks, but you seem to speak good enough English, so why not just get an English version then?

  • iowasevenk

    Posted May 8, 2009 4:14 am PT

I found a fix that worked for me:
Use horrid GFW to download the esm files. Hunt them down from where they were downloaded to, and load them up like a mod (don't use GFW in game). That way, you can buy them legitimately, and not have to use the crashtastic service to run them.

  • Warlord_Irochi

    Posted May 8, 2009 4:13 am PT

It may be Microsoft fault... but in any case bethesda releases great games but was unable to launch a game into the market that didn't need 25 patches to properly work since Elder Scrolls 2.

Also, since I'm from Spain, who does the damned localization in bethesda?. Some text apper in english and some voice/text are directly bad translated

I.E.: "Lata del garaje" (Garage can) for "Garbaje Can" or also "No hablar solo TREN" intead of "no talk, only TRAIN" ("Tren" is the spanish word for the well known over-rails transport system, "train" is used in english for both that transport system and "Training", which in spanis is writen "entrenar")

offtopic, sorry, but wanted to say here that Bethesda's translator for spanish language are absolutely incompetent.
