Just more than a month after the second Fallout 3 expansion was recalled from Xbox Live, the third appears to have stumbled on the PC. According to widespread reports on both the official Bethesda Softworks and Games for Windows forums, those downloading the PC edition of Fallout 3: Broken Steel have encountered the following error while installing:

"Install of Broken Steel failed. Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009200D)."

As a result, the add-on has been pulled from the Games for Windows Live Marketplace, whose digital-rights management software is being fingered as the culprit. Speaking to Shacknews, Bethesda reps said that the problem is "a games for Windows Live DRM Install error... Microsoft is working on fixing it, and we'll let everyone know once we've verified it."

Apparently the problems with Broken Steel are not limited to the PC edition of Fallout 3. Bethesda has also said that it is looking into Xbox Live server synchronization issues that are reportedly preventing players of the 360 edition from earning their much-coveted achievement points. "We are also looking into achievement/gamerscore issue, and the correct channels have been contacted and informed," the company divulged on a forum post. No PlayStation 3 issues have been reported--as Fallout 3's DLC is exclusive to the 360 and PC.

DLC for Fallout 3 is something that i have chosen to pass on. Fallout 3 was and always will be a true masterpiece of an rpg and i prefer to not sour the experience or ruin the memories of completing the game as a ranger of the wastes. on my current play thru i am becoming one of the most detestable humans walking the desolate wasteland. when i set off the nuke in megaton i really felt like i was going to hell when i die. lol.

Seems like Bethesda has not released a Fallout DLC that doesn't need to be fixed (with a patch) or recalled. They really need to do something about their QA team ...

Can't play broken steel for xbox 360.
I downloaded the dlc for operation anchorage and broken steel from xbox live but i can't figure out how to play it. I went back to teh end where you have to turn on the purifier and there was no difference in gameplay, the max xp has not changed. Do i have to be online with xbox live always while i'm playing the game? Is there some installation (other than the actual download) that i must complete before i can play it? The downloads both show up in the download section after i load fallout 3 but i cannot select them or anything. i ahve never downloaded dlc for xbox before. SOME HELP ME PLEASE - i'm starting to get really frustrated

I have to say you guys can get really immature, So what if the author wrote that little bit about PS3's, it was meant to be funny and not offensive. It was made pretty clear that Play Station users wouldn't have access to DLC pretty early on. I mean there alot of PS3's exclusive content that I wish I had but don't. All I'm saying is lighten up, there are wose things to be mad about.

Downloaded it as soon as it was up and I haven't had any problems so far either. Give them some credit, even with all the bugs in the Pitt it took them no more than a day, NO MORE than 24 hours, to have it back up and ready on Live. To me, that's pretty dang impressive. Besides, as far as acheivements go, they'll no doubt be fixed eventually. Just be thankful the content works. Go kill some mutant overlords, albino scorpions, or wear some Hellfire Power Armor till then.

@adamchuff....Think your right. Bethesda seems to be really trying to fix the issues fans have been plagued with. Hopefully they'll continue this policy with all future games.

hey i have downloaded Broken Steel the first day it came out for xbox 360 and i have had no problems w/ it at all so far. i understand how they were w/ the pitt dlc and pulled it asap but it was back out fixed in like 1-2 days... i have no worries for everyone that is upset about this, Bethesda will try their hardest to fix it for the loyal people who keep them going. I am one whom hated the company at one point but after fallout 3 i had respect. dont worry everything will be fine...... who's going with me??....

I was having problems installing Fallout 3 DLC on my PS3! I can't find it on Playstation Network! (Sarcasm) I had to re-buy the game for the PC in order to play the expansions. I don't like the deal Microsoft and Bethesda worked out. I bet Microsoft specifically paid Bethesda money with this quote "I will pay you xbillion dollars if you don't, DON'T make this for the PS3. Use the excuse that it couldn't run it. It will make all Sony fans hate you, and you will no longer have produce games fro their machine!" That is how I imagine it going down... I hate Microsoft.

"No PlayStation 3 issues have been reported--as Fallout 3's DLC is exclusive to the 360 and PC."

Sarcasm should be something that a skilled journalist uses with great finesse - this sentence hardly has any. A reader would imply from this passage that the writer is either glad that the PS3 is spared from low quality add-ons or the PS3 is missing out on what would be more fun for Fallout 3 Xbox 360 and PC license owners. In other words, the objective of this statement is vague at best.

Anyway, I am somewhat glad the issue lies largely with Microsoft, and not Bethesda. Microsoft really knows how to mess up games sometimes.

Oh.. you'll notice I'm posting this a little after midnight on the 7th of May. Keep in mind that this DLC was originally supposed to come out at the end of March. So a 1 month delay wasn't good enough for them, they also had to f--- up the delivery. Gamespot, I know you guys need news stories and the like, but PLEASE don't even talk about more DLC for this game until the current set is fixed. My subscription fees will thank you.

How is it that MS can't really release anything without some sort of bug/error/required update? I'm going to call out Bethesda on this as well and tell them "eff you, morons" for associating this game with GFWL. Such a broken, doomed system. I'll be basing my game purchases around never using that piece of trash ever again. Thanks for the confirmation of a crappy product, MS!

Seriously, Windows Live is a terrible service. It's completely idiotic for Bethesda to use it for the Fallout 3 DLC's. That being said, I can't really complain. Seeing as I pirated the game on my PC (which by the way works perfectly), after being blown off with the DLC's on the PS3. I wasn't even planning on buying them anyway. It's kind of simple to install the DLC's with the data file loadout of the loose files. And while business is business. Thing's like this are destroying Bethesda reputation, because of them being idiotic enough to use the "Windows Live" service.

Hey...It's a numbers game, If PS3 was outselling the 360 like they did with the PS2 then all the exclusive DLC would be on PS3 and all the Microsoft fans would cry foul.....If Nintendo outsold the other systems the same thing would happen too so really everyone just calm down......
For the record I was a PS2 user and frankly I like 360 better this time around, games look prettier and run smooth and they don't force me to install the game to my hard drive just to save the laser from moving too far on the disc.....

"No PlayStation 3 issues have been reported--as Fallout 3's DLC is exclusive to the 360 and PC." -- it's funny how this one true statement can get so many people all flustered. The funniest thing is that it's true, and just because he's saying something true that makes the editor unprofessional and bias? Get over the fact that the PS3 has a crappy, gimmicky, bare-bones copy of Microsoft's online infrastructure and go play some bowling @ Home. XBL has all the exclusive DLC, and that's just fine by me. At least you PS3 owners have some good exclusive GAMES to look forward to this year, while the 360 owners are getting stiffed in that department. All we've got is the same old good games, expanded.

Am I the only one that thinks it could be the opposite of what the psycho fan boys are complaining about? What if he likes ps3 and was making a stab at Bethesda.... I have fallout 3 for the ps3. I don't see what the reason people think that just because a company makes a product their console deserves it. Its retarded. If you want to play the expansion then buy a 360... BETHESDA FTW!!!
