It's time for the denizens of Electronic Arts' Spore to raise whatever passes for their appendages high and do a little happy dance, as yesterday marked the creation of the 100 millionth user-generated species for the PC game. While the official Sporepedia that had been keeping a running tally of the species was down as of press time, a developer on the game's official forums confirmed that the milestone has been reached.
Helping spur the Spore community on to the number was a contest EA ran, wherein the creator of the 100 millionth species would receive an assortment of schwag, including a copy of Spore (just in case the creation was made using the downloadable Spore creature creator instead of the full version of the game). The other prizes included an Nvidia graphics card and a copy of the Spore Galactic Adventures expansion when it becomes available next month.
While Spore is a multistage strategy game that culminates in interplanetary conquest, the powerful-yet-accessible creature creator tool has been singled out for celebration. For an idea of the creature creator's potential, check out a selection of Spore Illustrated's favorite abominations.
