Spore spawns 100 million creations

It's time for the denizens of Electronic Arts' Spore to raise whatever passes for their appendages high and do a little happy dance, as yesterday marked the creation of the 100 millionth user-generated species for the PC game. While the official Sporepedia that had been keeping a running tally of the species was down as of press time, a developer on the game's official forums confirmed that the milestone has been reached.

Helping spur the Spore community on to the number was a contest EA ran, wherein the creator of the 100 millionth species would receive an assortment of schwag, including a copy of Spore (just in case the creation was made using the downloadable Spore creature creator instead of the full version of the game). The other prizes included an Nvidia graphics card and a copy of the Spore Galactic Adventures expansion when it becomes available next month.

While Spore is a multistage strategy game that culminates in interplanetary conquest, the powerful-yet-accessible creature creator tool has been singled out for celebration. For an idea of the creature creator's potential, check out a selection of Spore Illustrated's favorite abominations.

100 million species created. And 99,989,000 of those species have been abandoned by the player who created it, bored of the game after 3 days.

I liked making the creatures more than the actual gameplay.

Oh Spore, not quite the evolution sim I was waiting for, but good on reaching a milestone. Guess I have to be a scientist/code master to get the try and/or die sim evolution game. Time to go outside and irradiate some tadpoles in my real world attempts, . . . can't wait til they visit the EA inhabitants or just reach the space stage.

How about stopping the waste of money by making new body parts to slap onto your starting amorphous blob, and instead spend the money to make the majority of the content (space stage) more interesting and have new storylines. It gets really boring expanding your "empire," buying out or conquering allies, and just trying to get to the center of the galaxy. Veni Vidi Abii. I came, I saw, I left. Even something like being able to play as the Grox would be a nice change from the monotony.

A heavily spiced up game with numerous epic flaws and somewhat hasty (nascant) processes from EA, haha, get it? Yeah well it doesn't make sense, I liked it, smashed the story to space then realised, from the moment I clicked the little exit button in-client, that my life was scarred with this bog flush. /Sigh There's always 'Spore: Galactic Adventures?'

and about 10 of those creatures will be from paying customers... the other 999,990 where from people who used bit torrent to get the game...

Spore isnt the BEST game out htere, but it did bring new advancements to the gaming industry! But Spore will never be as good and successful as The Sims! The Sims 3 will be the next groundbreaking game of the year and will sell double what The Sims 2 sold!! Only 31 days left!!!!

Yeah, 100 million creatures, and out of those, 99 million are variations of creatures that look like a penis...

Give me a damn break, Spore is the biggest waste of money EVER, i should have bought GTA 4 instead...

    Spore is brainless OFFLINE GRIND...

Gamespot stop reporting on Spore, all you get is people being reminded of how much of a dissapointment it was.

I didn't like Spore. Boring. Poor game mechanics. Creature creater was boring and had little to do with what you did in the game. In a lot of ways the game just seemed like a poor RTS.

Spore had to be one of the biggest diappointments in a game for me of all time. Even if it was overhyped. Even the creature creator wasn't all I thought it would be.

100 million is an exaggerated count. If anyone were to do a minor change like the skin color, hand or foot change it would count it as a creation.

I guess the only interesting thing about this game is the creature creator. It isn't as if a 100 million copies were sold.

Have you even looked at the catalog recently? Easily 90% of the entries are garbage or rip offs of existing species. Plus, as everyone knows, it really doesn't matter what your species looks like, as none of their attributes / colors / teeth / legs / wings make any difference when you play the game past the 2nd stage. They mine as well all be different colored stick figures for the difference these 100 million species make to the game play.
