Sony unveiling motion-sensing PS3 controller at E3?

What we heard: Less than 48 hours after a geyser of speculation erupted about a new PSP reveal at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Sony rumor volcano is rumbling once again. This time, Variety's game blog, The Cut Scene, is citing "several sources" as saying that Sony will unveil a new motion-sensing controller at its E3 press event on Tuesday, June 2.

Though not the first report of a new Sony motion-sensing controller--Sony filed a series of patents for such technology last fall--the Variety article appears to be one of the first to boast a detailed description from a developer who has seen the device firsthand.

"A good source saw a working prototype several months ago that largely fit what was in the patent. Sony's controller apparently used LEDs (light emitting diodes, essentially little electric light sources) and a small webcam to track the device's movements," reports Cut Scene correspondent Ben Fritz. "Because the camera can read different color lights and the shape and angle of each light, it's much more accurate than the Wii-mote. It can track precise movements, including along the Z axis (pushing toward and away from the TV; something the Wii is really bad at) as well as velocity."

Fritz's source's description jibes with the form factor shown in the patent: a controller that can be broken apart into two halves topped with bulbous sensor arrays. The unnamed developer is also apparently one of a number of game creators who are being asked to work on games specifically designed for the still-unnamed controller.

Bogus or not bogus?: Last year's patents prove that Sony is working on some kind of new camera-assisted motion-sensing tech. (The Sixaxis certainly didn't do the trick.) Fritz's detailed account also indicates that the device is likely already in developers' hands.

However, even if Sony is currently planning to unveil the device at E3, that's no guarantee that it will actually be unveiled there. Not even the Big Three console makers are immune from last-minute changes, as evidenced by Microsoft's abrupt removal of the Halo 3: ODST reveal from its E3 press event last year. Gamers won't have to wait long to find out, though; the expo will kick off in Los Angeles one month from today.

    @all people opposed to the ps3 if you think about it, its not what the wii can do its what the wii does do, and what it does is create 3rd party games to a crap standard the graphics are second to even ps2 games the gameplay is just alot of waggling and most games dont even need motion controls , as for this new controller , this is initialy what i thought the wii would have been, sorry nintendo fanboys you might have the tech but you dont have the knowhow :/

    its ok when you take something from a company and upgrade it to something of their own and that is what Microsoft did they upgraded. Sony is a different story they just copied the controller type and everything is pathetic. I would say they upgraded but they didn't everything that their new controller can do the Wii-mote can do. Then they are adding the wii motion plus so that the controller is even better .

    @Domig_xxx The ps3 kills the Wii on online and the Xbox360 the ps3 is free online and its great and the games are amazing for it... God of War 3 Uncharted 2 Resistance i could name more... what has nintindo got going for it the stuff they have been showing since the start of gaming zelda and don't get me wrong I love the series but they have been showing that way to much they need to start new and better game franchise's. The xbox360 has Halo 4 more than likely is going to be showing up and Gears of War 3.

    @jayd02 oh errm btw when did the original xbox come out? was it err 7 years after the ps1 and still 2 years after the ps2 so up yours, also how long do you think it takes to design and put into process a motion sensitive controller? i think that might be a bit longer than the length of time it takes wii to anounce motion sensitive controls an no i'm not a fanboy.

    alright guys the winner of e3 this year is undenyable its you the consumer you are the ones that are able to buy all the thing that are anvieled its not like sony or M$ refuse to sell you stuff cuz of the first system you got so if you like somthing you see get it if you don't don't bother. the point is this year's e3 is great so far I mean so many great things are comming out and it not for M$ fans or sony fans its for anyone who wants to buy it. think of it as saving the economy now get out there and buy something show that there is a demand for somethin and hopefully sony and M$ will continue to keepmaking geat things.

    i think sony is allowed to design there own similar type. nintendo havnt kicked off about it so why are all of you throwing your wii-motes out of the crib?
    besides wii is getting the motion plus. instead of whining about your only gimmick, look forward to the next one and hope nintendo can pull it out of the bag. i for one hope nintendo are successful with the motion plus (and really hope they dont produce too few like the wii fit!)

    how did p3 copy 360? only reason 360 came out when it did is it thought p3 was going to come out at the same time. also 360 is not blu-ray. p3 dont die for no reason and it dont put ugly rings on there games when you play it. just to say there copying b/c of HD gaming. if that's the case then every TV station copied someone else.

    also a lil thing down below said that wii would copy sony if they got HD...um that kinda doesn't count. HD is the future of gaming and all consoles should have it, and if you really want to be like that then ps3 copied microsoft with HD gaming cause 360 came out almost a year before I think? If Wii....when wii becomes HD sony will just be the mid point between 360 and wii cause all sony did was copy everybody else and rise the price.

    I am a nintendo fan boy, I will admit but even so I have to admit that microsoft did it the best. They didn't go on and on about themselves like nintendo or sony did. Microsoft showed things that were new. They have somewhat copied nintendo with the cam but they made it better. Now sony on the other hand just can't get a good idea on their own. The whole demonstration looked like wii a few years ago. Oh and gamerkingsz microsoft has kept everything original, sony has been coping since day one

    This is going to start capturing market share from nintendo not only because of motion tech is better , but also because the games are still 100 times crisper and better looking.

    Lets hope they have the proper permission this time around.. not that it matters. A 3 year old technology isn't going to save the already dead PS3.
    Nintendo already said that they feel honored that other companies are starting to use what Nintendo made popular.

    Who cares about whether or not MS or Sony or Nintendo copies each other. If we didn't have competition there would be no need for games to evolve and become more innovative and engaging. So even though I don't own a PS3, I'll commend Sony for trying something new and bringing more to the market. In the long run, the consumers win. (that's us, btw)

    that link you provided supports everything i was saying, so thanks. unless you think it takes more than 6 months to add finishing touches ;-)

    and in *none* of them do they say the ps3 version is being held back *because of the 360*. i know this as a fact cause ive seen many forums where gamers argue over these type of comments over and over again. devs would say something like "and so we are currently working hard to ensure both versions are on par with each other" and suddenly fanboys would claim "omg, so that means the ps3 version is being held back because of the 360. thats why i hate ms blah blah blah", when that is NOT what the devs were saying.

    of course multiplatform games rarely push consoles to the limits, but that applies to *all* the consoles, so just as they not using all of the ps3s potential, they are not using all of the 360s potential either.

    devs who know both consoles from working on them say they are about the same in power, with the ps3 having some advantages over 360 and the 360 some advantages over ps3. until recently, certain fanboys where claiming only the ps3 could handle a game like crysis if it were ported to consoles, and yet this is what the devs crytek said in edge magazine this month about their cryengine 3 running on ps3 and 360, "we have parity between the platforms now: both run at the same speed. If the game's shader-heavy it runs a bit faster on 360; if it's compute-heavy with physics and particles, then the SPUs take over and it's a bit quicker on PS3".

    so, again, 360 and ps3 offer same performance except for a little bit extra if a game plays to their strength. so if a game needs to push the gpu more, the 360 has the edge, if it pushes the cpu more, then the ps3 has the edge. this is what all the devs who have programmed both consoles have to say about them and yet we still have gamers in denial.

    and yeah, this has strayed, so lets get back to motion-sensing controllers.

    I never said that xbox is holding back the japenese version either because i dont even know if there is gonna be a japenese version. So stop with the nonsense. Xbox is just holding back the NA release of the ps3 version not the Jap version.
    Oh and about the soul calibur thing. I can think of countless articles saying multi platform games are have been held back(and i dont mean the timing of there release) because the developers dont want a huge difference in the game.     E3 isn't something I get excited about anymore in terms of "seeing the future," because the E3 show isn't nearly as big as it used to be; there simply isn't enough room for "the future," unless you don't have many games in "the present."

    This is the reason why a lot of the people who wanted to see "the future" at E3 really liked Sony's PS3 show over the last two years, but they didn't like Microsoft or Nintendo. The simple reason was that Microsoft and Nintendo had so much software that was being released in 2007 and 2008, that they didn't have time to focus on 2009 or 2010 the way that Sony did with the PS3. For example, Microsoft didn't even show Gears of War 2 at E3; they waited until the Game developers Conferance and surprised everyone!

    The last time we saw all the developers focus on "the future," was the last really huge show, which was in 2006. In 2006, Microsoft absolutely dominated the show, with 83% of the voters saying that Microsoft had the best show, 12% saying Nintendo had the best show, and only 5% saying Sony had the best show.

    The poor performance of the Playstation 3 in 2006 is basically the reason why the traditional E3 no longer exists. Sony didn't like it that people ripped on them for telling all those lies with the PS3, and not being able to live up to the false promises. So, when Sony said they weren't going to another E3 like that, EA said they weren't going either since the PS2 was their main platform. This pretty much ruined the E3 show.

    Based on some things I've heard, Microsoft does have some surprises up their sleeve, though...but not for "next" year...This Year!!! I have heard we will see some cool things regarding Killer Instince and Perfect Dark.

    Killer Instinct is an awesome game to bring to Xbox Live Arcade...and if there was a new Killer Instinct 3 released for Xbox 360, it would make a lot of people happy!

    Perfect Dark is a game that would be awesome on Xbox Live Arcade, too. Finally being able to have dual-analog thumbsticks for the original Perfect Dark would be great! ... And if we were to finally hear that Perfect Dark is going to get a "true" sequel, it would be awesome! Perfect Dark 2 would be great!

    Tekken 6 was released in Japanese arcades quite a while ago -- in November of 2007.

    Tekken 6 in arcades uses hardware that is based on PS3 technology, using a 357 arcade board, similar to what Namco used to do with previous Tekken games based on Playstation hardware. This is the reason why the editors I was telling you about in that particular issue thought Soul Calibur 4 on the PS3 was "finally going to show what the PS3 was capable of."

    Remember, at that point in time, Soul Calibur 4 was only scheduled for PS3 -- nobody had mentioned it for Xbox 360 yet, just like so many others such as Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13 Versus, Devil May Cry 4, Assassins Creed, and many others. This is why it pretty much goes without saying that the PS3 was the Lead Development Platform. The comments of the Independent Playstation Magazine when interviewing the developers supports this, because they talked about what they learned from Tekken 6 and how it applied to Soul Calibur 4 on the PS3.

    Soul Calibur 4 ended up running at the standard resolution of 1280x720p on the Playstation 3, while the Xbox 360 version that was released ran at 40% higher resolution of 1365x960p.

    But the thing that really hurt the PS3 version was the lack of rumble support for the Dual-Shock 3 controller. It basically means that anyone who spent $60 on that controller wasted it if they bought it in order to feel swords smashing each other the way they did in the good-ole days of previous Soul Calibur games. That's why I'm a little bit skeptical about buying controllers that are mentioned in this article.

    I didn't exaggerate with the price of batteries.

    The manufacturers suggested retail price for an Xbox 360 Ni-Mh rechargable battery back is only $11.99. I pointed out that I paid $15, but that was because I bought one with a special design on it.

    AA batteries vary in price depending on brand and store. I agree with you that a 24-pack of batteries from one of the major brands is almost always $10 or more, even during sales. But, once you buy all those batteries you really are set for the whole year, if not longer.

    I did find an excellent place to buy AA batteries from. The local Meijer stores near my home sell their own "Meijer" brand of batteries. Those batteries cost a lot less, but they seem to perform just as good as the other brands. There was a sale last year during the the "back-to-school" days and I saw 24-packs for only $3.99. I bought one to see what that brand of battery was like, and I was very pleased.

    The Play-n-Charge accessory for the Xbox 360 is also not expensive. It basically costs $10 if you buy it as part of a pack where it comes with the controller, and it is often essentially "free" if you buy it during a controller sale.

    Seems pretty neat, I don't necessarily see it as competition since the Nintendo games are a bit different than PS3 games and it certainly isn't copying anything. Anyway, I look forward to seeing how this technology is used in future games.

    you said its ready but its being held back so that it can be released at the same time in na. the fact is, its due to be released in japan this year, and a demo has been released already, so the launch in japan has absolutely nothing to do with the 360. the devs have said many times already that they are not starting the 360 version until the ps3 version is released in japan. so the 360 cant be delaying the japanese version of the game, since it will be released in japan when its done, not when the 360 version is done. i thought you would be smart enough to work that one out for yourself. ;-)

    say what you like, but dont pretend ff13 is ready when its not, theres many months of work to be done as they try to get the game ready for the japanese release.

    the game engine crystal tools has been up and running on the 360, ps3 and pc for a long time now. and this is what the devs have said recently about their ff games;

    "Obviously we would like to release it over here as soon as possible. Traditionally the Final Fantasy numbered series, it takes about half a year between the release in Japan and the release in North America, and another half a year before it's released in Europe.     so traditionally, 6 months after japan for na and 1 year after japan for europe according to the devs themselves. so tell me, you *really* think its going to take more than 6 months to port the game to the 360 when the same game engine crystal tools is already running on the 360? i seriously doubt it. now if they had to code it from scratch for the 360, then definitely it would take longer.

    as for downgrading it for the 360. the only thing i expect to be downgraded is pre-rendered cutscenes, where hd video goes down to sd video, and 7.1 audio goes down to 5.1 audio on the 360. gameplay graphics will be the same as ps3 (the version i be getting). most of the cutscenes are going to be realtime.

    of course it can be better if more time was spent on the game, but that applies to all consoles, so yes, the 360 version would also be much better if the devs spent more time on the console. likewise, both 360 or ps3 version could have been even better if the game was exclusive to that console. so its a moot point imo.

    You know what I meant dude. I never said it was ready to be released in North America. I said it was allready made for the PS3(just the ps3 not anything about which country it was ready for) and that means the Jap version. I figured you'd be smart enough to put that together. It may not be released but its very close. I never said there was a american version done just a ps3 version. Not an xbox version and what do you think is gonna take longer voice acting? or down grading ff13 to an xbox version? Duh of course a Japenese country is gonna get a Japenese game first. What Im saying is NA is gonna get it later either way, but it would be released sooner if they didnt have to cross platform it. Oh and about the 10times better thing is you cant say it wouldnt be.     Sounds like little kids "Stop copying me!!!" dude who cares if they are or they arent copying anyone if it makes it better for the consumer or forces nintendo to come out with something better who are you to complain other than spending more money.
    I still think sony or m$ should come out with a system to compete with sony in the motion sensing because its a different market to me. Kinda like handhelds, motionsensing and consoles.
