Fallout: New Vegas announced

Bethesda's latest postapocalyptic action RPG heads to the PS3, 360, PC in 2010; Black Isle Studios castaway Obsidian Entertainment developing.

Released in October of last year, Fallout 3 was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, having shipped 4.7 million units worldwide in its first week. The game also performed well in the awards circuit, taking the top honours at the 2009 Game Developers Choice Awards last month during the Game Developers Conference.

Given that performance, it comes as little surprise that Bethesda Softworks won't be dallying in bringing a follow-up to market. At an event in London today, the publisher announced that a new Fallout game will be coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2010. Titled Fallout: New Vegas, the game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, whose most recent works include Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir and the upcoming Alpha Protocol. The studio was also at work on the third-person action title Aliens RPG before Sega canceled it earlier this year.

Obsidian Entertainment was founded in 2003 by Feargus Urquhart and others from Interplay's now-shuttered Black Isle Studios, developer of the original Fallout games. On hearing that the Fallout licence had fallen to Bethesda, Urquhart said: "Good Luck! That's probably somewhat horrible to say, but I think the team at Bethesda has their work cut out for them. This is mostly because there is almost nothing that they can do that will make the Fallout fans happy."

Fallout: New Vegas will be set in the Fallout universe but will not be a direct sequel to Fallout 3. However, it will stick to that game's RPG format, rather than branching out into real-time strategy territory as happened with 2001's Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.

i am really looking forward to this if they learn from there fallout 3 mistakes and fix them like clunky shooting, bad ai, and technical problems and hopefully they will take there time a little more on this one and make sure everything is complete when they release it

A new Elders Scrolls is what everyone wants! Sure a new Fallout would be nice...but Fallout 3 just came out...It's been years since Oblivion came out. I just hope Bethesda isn't planning on releasing a new Elders Scrolls with the next generation of gaming...that will be forever...

Don't worry it was Lucas Arts that made Obsidian push the deadline because of holiday release. Lucas isn't part of this game so it will be complete

***As someone has said before, I'm truly hoping Bethesda delegated New Vegas to Obsidian only so that they can concentrate on the Elder Scrolls series, be it a new Expansion Pack or a complete new installment. - _Witchunter_****

I completely agree. Although Bethesda is so good as this type of RPG, and fallout is such a great series that I just pray it doesn't go south.

NW2 devs and = bugs galore. This is not good news. NW2:MoZ was one of the buggiest games I've ever bought and played (and worse than Ubisoft's bugged out Silent Hunter IV game). The art direction is also not on par to what Bethesda can produce (really love their art direction, a common theme through games). Scratch getting a game from this dev house, just not going through that and the mods from hell on their official forum (for even *mentioning* technical problems, and get 2 mods riding your tail eager to close the thread and ban you). Any game company THAT sensitive about feedback doesn't deserve business, and the quote above by Urquhart explains why. Sad.

Happy that at least some of original team are involved
loved Fallout 3 but not weapons/confusing maps
it took me three replays to find 95 % of stuff
in my opinion Beteshda are yet to better Morowind
now that was a game, most of Oblivion flaws were hidden by pretty graphics
it become repetitive after you closed gate number 67 943,i mean man that game was boring

This better be better than 3. Not saying that Fallout 3 was bad but there are many flaws in it, even though they are outweighed significantly by the content. Better DLC's for New Vegas as well.

i liked Fallout but i agree with u guys i mean fallout was great but oblivion was just "WOW" and i am a bit pissed that they have already thought of new fallout but not a new TES but to be honest TES games are bigger and with more things to do so i understand why they are having a hard time making a TES

omg Bethesda isn't developing it. They should give the Elder Scrolls series to Electronic Arts while they're at it. I think this buzz they've gotten since Fallout 3 came out has put them in a frenzy.

OOhhh so by the sounds of it some of the original crew have their hands on this game!! The new engine coupled with the original minds could make for the greatest fallout ever in the history of the universe.... omg roll on 2010... Armegeddon here we come.

Bethesda gave the development to Obsidian because they already have their hands full working on the next Elder Scrolls game.

I'm really wondering how the format of the game is going to be for this game. Obviously it won't be like Fallout 3, b/c Betheseda has it's own engine, but I can't really see a modern game looking like Fallout 1& 2. Now don't get me wrong, those were both amazing games. But I'm looking for more than improved graphics.

I am definitely happy with the development team for New Vegas. Hopefully, it will be darker and more adult, like Fallout2- with lots of drugs and addicts, sex, gangs. Not like the sterile Falout3, where foul language is forced and only for show.

Fallout 3 is a awesome game. But I can't help but feel, sometimes, that it was a little unfinished. Well... that's just my opinion anyway.
