30,000 Nintendo DSis sold down under

Nintendo Australia announces launch figures for the latest revision of the Nintendo DS.

Nintendo’s latest handheld games device, the DSi, hasn’t yet been on sale for a full calendar month, but the company is already heralding its sell-through rate for the new console after its first 11 days on shelves.

Following in the footsteps of the US and Europe sales figure announcements, Nintendo today confirmed sales data for the third iteration of Nintendo’s DS--the Nintendo DSi in Australia. This latest revision adds two integrated digital cameras, slightly increases the size of the screens, and adds SD memory card support. According to Aussie games data tracker GfK Australia, during the first 11 days of sale, the Nintendo DSi has sold in excess of 30,000 units.

Compared to previous Nintendo DS hardware launches, the original Nintendo DS "Phat," as it has been dubbed by fans, sold 20,000 consoles during its first month at retail, while the smaller and brighter-screened Nintendo DS Lite sold a mere 4,000 units over the course of its first seven days.

Since launching the original platform in 2005, the Nintendo DS has sold over 1.9 million consoles to the Australian market, more than 200,000 of which have been sold since late January this year according to the Nintendo release.

At the time of publication, Nintendo Australia was unavailable to comment on the sales of its downloadable DSiWare games, which launched alongside the DSi on April 2.

DO NOT DENY THE POWER OF THE DSi, DSL-OSERS. GO AND SUPPORT THE ECONOMY AND BUY IT FROM AN AUSTRALIAN RETAILER, JB/BIGw ETC.

@doubledareus "listening to your music, or even checking out the local weather, train schedule, or even your emails!"

so Nintendo finally is somewhat caught up to Sony. Gee, don't hear anybody complaining that Nintendo "borrowed" these ideas from the PSP that already had all these functions.

I was at the midnight launch too!

Yay-sixth dsi in all of australia-cool eh?

...sorry, got excited-I didn't have any income when I bought the dam thing, so that's nearly 200 out of my pocket (traded in a mates ds lite-with a dead battery that only stays charged for an hour XD).
Oh well, nothing special yet for this thing, just adding it to my collection...

Economic crisis is the problem to all of this and also stop upgrading consoles once it is launched. We had DS, DS Lite and now DSi like PSP-1000 then PSP-2000 then PSP-3000. Stop upgrading the same console unit! Not everyone is rich to buy them!

I'm giving it a while. At least until DSi-only titles (cards, not downloads) crank out something I really want. If I'm lucky the supply will be good. If I'm really lucky the price may go down by then.

There are no doubt a lot of cynics out there arguing the benefits of upgrading to a DSi. I have one myself, replacing my DSLite as my interest in GBA games died out a long time ago. Its worth the upgrade over a DSLite, so long as you manage to get the price down a fair way on it. No way is it worth a flat out $300 if you already own a DS/DSL. Bigger screens and better sound may not sound like alot on paper but you really appreciate the improvements if you actually own one.

DSi... I seriously have never ever seen so much advertisement for a console before, the posters, the dumb chicks flogging the console at JB, booklets, billboards...
I don't think these sales figures are by chance, Nintendo worked long and hard to get these figures and good on them, I have a DSL and am happy with that as I never had a GBA, but I'm sure many people where sucked in by the advertisement... ;D

I got 1 so that I could play Chrono Trigger! Have 2 gba's, no sp, no DS or DS Lite, so for me...it's definitely worth thw purchase! Can't wait to play Phantom Hourglass and Minish Cap! You can spend hours playing with the Cameras, listening to your music, or even checking out the local weather, train schedule, or even your emails!

I for one haven't seen the benefit of upgrading to the DSi. Everything I want and need is available on the DSlite. Especially knowing that developers are going to be extremely limited on developing exclusively FOR the DSi knowing that a good majority of DS users are still using Gen1 and Gen2 DSs. That being said, other than the online store (which has yet to prove its worth in worthwhile titles) and the addition of music on the go (already have many devices that serve this function better) there really is little the DLi truely brings to the table. Better sound? Slightly larger screens (same resolution)? Two (low resolution) cameras? Worth 180$ ? I lose the GBA slot and its much pricier. I guess once again, I am not sold.
