What we heard: In August 2007, Warhawk made its long-awaited debut on the PlayStation 3. Eagerly anticipated since it was unveiled at Sony's E3 2005 press briefing, the sequel to the 1995 PlayStation classic was well received by critics despite being multiplayer-only. The subsequent 20 months saw developer Incognitio update its PS3 exclusive with several booster packs and the Warhawk Command Center in PlayStation Home.

Now, a new US trademark application has raised speculation that an even more futuristic sequel to the high-tech air-land combat game could be in the works. As first spotted by Superannuation, Sony Computer Entertainment America has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark for the title "Starhawk" for use in "computer game software and video game software" and "operating a real-time game for others over global and local area computer networks." Though no other further details were given on the Starhawk trademark, Superannuation did spot another title that SCEA is attempting to lock down--Dominion--for use in the same game-related areas.

Although Dominion could be any number of things--a PlayStation Network adaptation of the card-based strategy game among them--the uses for the Starhawk title are more limited. Considering that Warhawk is a planet-bound shooter with an emphasis on air combat, a space-combat adaptation of the game seems like a natural extension that would fit under the new trademark.

The official story: "There's nothing to announce about those trademarks at this time." --Sony rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: Given Warhawk's position in the Sony pantheon, an expanded sequel seems likely. However, whether Starhawk is a proper follow-up--or a spin-off--remains unclear.

There are a lot of recurring problems in the game that wouldn't be ignored unless Incognito is working on another project. I really think theyre making a sequel. And yes, a single player would be nice.

Warhawk would get more of my respect if they didn't put an auto aim in it!

In all honesty, if it would make Warhawk's sequel come out faster then I would say "NO" to Single Player game unless they offer a 2-4 player Campaign Co-Op mode similar to Call of Duty: World at War.

I have been playing Warhawk off and on over the past year or 2 and I believe this is "the" best online sandbox shooter on consoles. Battlefield 2/1942 on the PC still beats Warhawk.

I'm a Warhawk junkie. I will never get bored of this game. NOW, if they add in some kind of watercrafts... Cant wait for this game. (So long as it stays Splitscreen)

ya the infantry is definately more fun. and i tend to beast it with an assault rifle and a couple grenades. in the air tho...bad memories.

To kickass106. Infantry combat worked fine in my opinion, you just had to know how to deal with situations where the odds were against you; generally by using well aimed grenades!

mmmm this new can be either good or bad. It's good because Sony is finally taking over Warhawk again, after leaving it floating in there for so long (no new boosters, weapons, nor updates). It also can be bad, since it has a different name, meaning that story ain't the same. But we'll see. I will track this game development to see what happens. Warhawk is the best third person shooter online in the PS3.

The thing about warhawk was the infantry combat wasnt that good because no matter how good you aim somebody will always have a flamethrower, RPG, or those noob health things so there about to die and they throw it down for themself and kill you.

I have warhawk, I don't understand whats so good about it. It has fun plane physics really really really bad on foot and average driving. Maybe you all love it because of the updates or something because to me it is a weird, cartoony graphic, mediocre-good game.

This is why Socom isn't that great either. Multiplayer online only is really limiting the amount of people that can buy the game.

meh I only played warhawk because of the 4 player splitscreen online. It's fun, but gets old fast. The other thing i thought was kind of dumb was that three days after i started playing ranked (to unlock cool plane skins) they released the player art pack that included cooler skins than any of the unlockables i had seen.

I couldn't enjoy Warhawk because of the lack of single player. Competitive multiplayer for the sake of competitive multiplayer doesn't hold my attention for long. I tried it and it was interesting enough, but I never felt like I was accomplishing anything. I'm with rebound2. And I want female avatars too.

I luv warhawk. It would b much better if we could launch ranked games from home. no one ever wants to play the only game we actually can do a game launch from! they have no incentive to play new users. the online announcement in the game has not updated since OCTOBER, it 's about time somebody squeeled on status of current game before we hear about unneccassary sequel to a game that is by far still a viable and playable game. Hopefully this will be some kind of wicked expansion pack already set to be deployed on the pc and psn, WITH a single player campaign. C'MON Incognito (emphasis on copmpany name here) and Dylan, I'm callin u guys out. I know you are up 2 something!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plz :-( **HOPE** :-)

Yes, Warhawk in space would be cool, but they better have a single player campaign as well this time. Having Warhawk as multiplayer online only was just dumb. I still have the original game and it's a blast even though the graphics aren't the greatest.

    I want Single Player.
I want it in space on land.
I want Battlefront 3 style land to space gameplay (even though BF3 won't have that anymore).
I want free roaming space gameplay which allows you to fly into atmosphere of planets and get out and walk around.
I want the same awesome Warhawk gameplay.

finally, i hope so, i love warhawk but even with all 3 expansions im starting to get bored. For some reason i beat some new really good game like re5 or somthing then i end up going back to warhawk, i just dont know why, but it has the perfect balance of online, warhawks, ground may be unfair at some times, and then tanks.

I'm a huge fan of old PS2 Star Wars Jedi Starfighter games...even the old Tie Fighter game on the PC. Sadly, nothing has come out on the PS3 that even resembles the arcadely space flight dogfighting games...I'm looking forward to this!

I've played a little Warhawk and I found it to be decent but not all that great... It's fun but the controls seem to hold it back. Then again I do most of my gaming on the 360 (I do own Warhawk and a PS3) and not having the ability swap the fire button to the button trigger really, really, bugs me. (It bugs me in every PS3 game like that too.)

    @ THORINATOR
It's the same with me, whenever I get bored of a game I am playing now I'll just start up Warhawk again. I remember back in my prime of Warhawk I was ranked 700th, and I didn't cheat like a lot of other people

I always find myself returning to warhawk even though there has been countless triple A titles since it came out! The maps,weapons,vehicles...it has the perfect mix to still remain one of the best multiplayer games on the PS3. I hope this article turns out to be not bogus as a sequel or extension based in space would be excellent!
