It has been nearly a year to the day since Bungie last updated its top-rated sci-fi shooter Halo 3 with the Legendary Map Pack, a download that introduced a trio of arenas to the Xbox 360-exclusive's acclaimed multiplayer component. Now, those still enamored with the 19-month-old shooter have the option of picking up a few new playgrounds, as the Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack has been added to the Xbox Live Marketplace today.

Like the Legendary Map Pack and its predecessor, the Heroic Map Pack, the Mythic Map Pack adds three new multiplayer maps to Halo 3. Assembly is an open arena situated inside a massive Covenant structure designed for two to eight players. Accommodating 4 to 12 players, Orbital presents a corridor-filled space station. Lastly, Sandbox is an open map designed to be customized using Halo 3's Forge level editor, and it also supports 4 to 12 players.

The Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack is available for MSP800 ($10) and will also be included in the spin-off Halo 3: ODST this fall. For more on the maps, check out GameSpot's hands-on preview, as well as the below video.

Wow, this looks awesome, but I'm gonna wait for ODST too.

I'm gonna wait for ODST. If I recall correctly they're going to include all 7 mythic maps. I need to start playing again though. I bought the other two packs and barely played because I got distracted by other games.

Am I the only one who can't understand the value in these map packs? I own the Legendary pack. I play social slayer, and none of the new maps ever come up (mythic ones will since that's free now). I play the special DLC playlist and I get my ass handed to me by all the hardcore Halo people. If Legendary didn't have Blackout (the only map I'll play offline with friends), I would've considered it a waste, and I don't see any reason I should download this one...

The maps are alright. Assembly is fun, Orbital is confusing and Sandbox is good for forging if you are into it.
But sandbox by itself is alright though.

Nintendogene, I don't know what you're talking about... from my experience the excitement over the Mythic pack has been at least 1.5x what it was for the Legendary pack, if not for Sandbox alone.

Less and less people are paying $10 for dlcs now. I remember when people went crazy over Legendary map pack...

My bet is that eventually the maps will be free. If they did the same thing with Halo 2, why wouldn't they follow up with halo 3 as well?

What with the overpriced dlc lately ( I am also thinking of Resident evil 5). You can get so much with that 10$... Prey is 5$ on gamersgate. Prey value>3 maps@10$.
5-10$ sales happen often on the various digital distribution service.

"So yeah sometimes you will run into people will annoy you by making your ears bleed with their singing or stupid ranting but just mute them."

The greatest thing about Halo 3 was the ability to turn on mass mute for everyone that wasn't on your team. EVERY online game should have this option.

I personally think Assembly isn't that great, but Orbital and Sandbox really deliver IMO.

Yes the XBL community is annoying at times but I don't think it is as bad as people make it out to be. My xbox broke down a year ago (not the RRoD. Different problem that I'd have to pay to get fixed.) and I haven't played Halo 3 since then, but before it broke I played at least 400 games. Almost all of them went smoothly without people acting like idiots. What you will run into more often are people who annoy you through the headset (which is easily fixed by just muting them) but I rarely encountered people who would do the things you mentioned. So yeah sometimes you will run into people will annoy you by making your ears bleed with their singing or stupid ranting but just mute them. You will rarely find people that ruin the game for you by playing like morons. Even the mic spamming idiots still play like normal people would.

Comeon, the news I wants to see is "Legendary Map Pack made free--2 million people play Halo 3 on XBL today," lol.

I tryed these maps cuz my friend got them with Halo Wars--Amazing,loved them,I just don't want to pay $10,trust me,they are worth it,but I just went on a $1000 spending spree for college dorm stuff this week, and I feel really bad about it lol.

@XanderZane The Mythic maps won't ever be free. Bungie is still charging for the legendary map pack that came out almost a year ago and they stated that they have no intention of changing that. They've got good reason too because a lot of people still play halo 3 and if your still playing halo 3 right now, you're probably dedicated enough to shell out the $10 for new maps.

Man, I haven't even opened Halo Wars and I have the Mythic codes inside! A lot of good games came out and I'm still trying to play through them.

It's no wonder people love Halo 3 so darn much. Halo proves it has staying power with all this new added content. It's not just some game you play, beat, then trade-in. There is always something new added every so often. Bungie keeps breathing fresh air into the franchise which makes for a healthy game lifespan.

    @Generic_Dude:

Just about everyone on my friends list still plays Halo 3 because there are many Achievements and much of the game/story that hasn't been explored yet. I often catch people flip-flopping every month or week. One second they'll be on Street Fighter IV/RE:V then next thing you know... two minutes later, HALO. Many of them may play Fallout 3 or SC:4 but then three days later HALO again. Halo 3 is the ONLY 360 game that everyone on my friends list had OR has. The sheer number of gamers that obtained this game after it's launch period is uncanny. As I looked down the list on 09/25/07 it read "Halo 3" starting from 1 all the way down to 99. My players list consisted of only Halo 3 players at the time. O_o I can't say that for any other 360 game really. Bioshock, DOA 4, Gears 2, CoD 4, SC 4, GTA 4, and Fallout 3, though all GREAT games have only come close but there were usually gaps between people playing. An example is while 7 people could be playing either one of those games there were always those odd balls playing something else like TMNT Arcade or DiRT. XD But not Halo 3 though, that game convinced everyone, even non-FPS gamers to hop on board. Sure half of them traded it in by now (I suppose they just had to see what all the hype was about during that time) but the other half surprisingly kept it, and fell in love with it as did I when I played the original Halo (back then I wasn't even into FPS games). Halo 3 can inspire people.

  • XanderZane

    Posted Apr 9, 2009 12:41 pm PT

The Maps will probably be FREE 6 months from now. No need to rush out anf get them now. The only reason there is even a Fee and M$ is forcing Bungie to charge the fee for the DLC. Bungie had previously said they would love to give the content out for FREE, but M$ is forcing their hand.

Looks great. I wish I had an Xbox 360 more and more every day.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure Halo 3 is right for me. I've never been very good at console FPS games (even though I started with Star Wars Battlefront for the PS2), and I always get creamed by my friends.

Compounding my utter lack of skill is the Xbox LIVE problem. I already have a Gamertag, thanks to Games for Windows LIVE, but even when I get an X360, I don't know if I'll go online. From what I hear, the X360-LIVE community, Halo 3 in particular, is made up of either whiny elementary-school-children who whore the rockets, run in circles, goof around, grenade themselves, drive off cliffs, and can't lose gracefully, or else it's nerdy teenagers who play the game 30 hours a day and rub your face in the dirt, calling you a n00b if you lose or a hacker if you win, and booting you after three games because they hate your guts inexplicably.

I'd love to be wrong, so if any of you have any happy stories about playing other people via XBL who are kind, considerate, sportsmanlike people, please message me and tell me about it. I'm in desperate need of a new console (already have a Wii, but that doesn't fit the bill for obvious reasons), and I'd love another reason to get one.

Thanks a bunch, and sorry about my off-topic rant!

Back on topic, I love the look of Sandbox. That and Foundry I'd have a heyday with. It's like LittleBigPlanet in a shooter!

If I get this pack, I'd probably do it via Halo Wars (don't tell me Halo Wars is bad, I need an easy RTS right now).

Once again, to clarify, I do NOT have an Xbox 360 at the present time.

Halo 3 is still the only shooter I really play on a regular basis. The occasional bout of Gears 2, and CoD4 just can't add up to Halo 3 for me. However, I don't want to pay $10 for three maps. I'm waiting for the Legendary pack to hopefully become free like the Heroic pack, and since I plan on picking up Halo 3: ODST this year, I'll just get the Mythic Pack along with it then.

But yeah, I'm one of the guys still in love with this game, it just doesn't get old for me.

Sadly I've moved on, there have been too many good shooters to come out recently and nothing new in Halo for a while. I might play them at a friends house later.

Well Sendmn23, I agree that Halo 3 is way too overpopulated with stopid little kids, but I dont thinks its fair to judge a game based on a bunch of idiots trying to ruin the fun. Plus, when I spot a little kid, I immediately go to their profile and mute them. Works every time

Plus, I've found just as many little kids on of all games, gears of war! And people dont complain about spending $10 on 3 bad gears maps, so whats wrong with spending $10 for three GREAT base halo maps? That also excludes the amazing forge capabilities presented for sandbox, which can let you create hundreds of new maps to play on!

Although I understand that companies like valve release free updates all the time, I dont see a problem with paying if its great stuff. And this definately is worth your money and time. Just my opinion though.

I can't believe there are people who will spend $10 on 3 maps. Another reason why PC is better for most games.

$10 for 3 maps? Am I missing something? I thought updates like this were the reason Xbox users pay a yearly fee?

Stick to Valve games. They release new maps and huge game updates for free. At least on the PC they do.

out of all the map packs that have come out, I have to say I don't like this one the most. I don't know maybe its me....but I've been playing Halo 3 online for a while now, over a year, and I'm really getting tired of all the hateful people/little kids who play online. Its the only place you can play "live" and run into nothing but rude gamers. After playing other games online its funny to see that there are nice gamers out there.... why is Halo so personal?

I shall.....wait. 800 points? Usually I would, but theres no decent Arcade games for 800 points to follow up with this download.
