PS3 outsells Wii in Japan in March

Financial Times report indicates Nintendo console sales slipped 63% during March to 99,335, well below the Sony system's 146,948 units.

The Japanese gaming market may be diminutive compared to the US and Europe, but the last month has seen Sony establish a leg up in the region over its current-generation console rivals. Citing figures from industry research firm and Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, the Financial Times reports that the PlayStation 3 sold 146,948 in Japan for the five-week period ended March 29. That figure easily trumps the PS3's closest competitor, the Nintendo Wii, which sold 99,335 units during the same period.

The FT notes that Sony's win in the region for the period is marked as much by the uptick in PS3 sales as a weakening in Wii sales. Wii sales for the period were off nearly 63 percent from the year-ago period, the financial trade reports, due in large part to its lack of compelling releases in March. On the other hand, the PS3 saw the release of anticipated games such as Sega's Yakuza 3 and Capcom's Resident Evil 5, both of which topped Media Create's weekly software charts.

However, Nintendo seems unfazed by the Wii's lagging sales in Japan. "It is still the first few months of the year when sales are slow for the industry, so we are not particularly concerned," a representative told the FT. "We hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year."

Despite its recent downturn in Japan, the Wii remains the most popular console in the US. Reporting on February sales last month, the NPD Group revealed that the Wii easily outsold the PlayStation 3, 753,000 units to 276,000.

    2) I am not sure why you got the impression that I agree that the PS3 is the better console. In my opinion the 360 is easily the best console this generation. For every hour I play my PS3, I play roughly 20 hours of my Xbox 360. In my opinion the 360 has better games and a much better online serivce.

    3) I never said Blu-Ray isn't good. It is great for for HD movies. Blu-Ray is a better format than what? DVDs? Well sorry that is your opinion not fact. If you think it is fact, than please provide the proof. I'd also rather swap discs than sit through lengthy installs. In fact over 20 gigs on my PS3's HDD is taken up by COMPULSORY installs thanks to the slow Blu-Ray drive. In my opinion when it comes to gaming, the PS3's blu-ray drive has been more of a liability than an advantage.

    4) Blu-Ray did beat HD-DVD, not because it is a better format, but because Sony pushed the Blu-Ray player unto all of its PS3 consumers. In my opinion that is the only reason the PS3 has a Blu-Ray drive in the first place. Sony didn't want their format to suffer the same fate as their previous formats (Betamax, Mini Disc and UMD).

    5) Once again what you say about graphics is pure opinion not fact. You think that games on the PS3 have better graphics. I personally disagree (I find the graphics in GOW2 to be superior to anything on the PS3). Once again that's just opinion. You are also neglecting to mention the fact that plenty of developers have complained about programming on the PS3. Just go read Gabe Newell's comments. Simply claiming that Rockstar complained about DVD disc capacity proves nothing. And as I told Malco-Vincenzo media format is not the most important issue when it comes to game development (or for that matter software development in general). Computer architecture (especially where low level programming is a necessity), the API developers have to work with, tools/libraries available etc. are all more important issues. Don't forget that there are plenty of HD games on the PC and they all utilize the DVD format. Why is that, if as you say, the DVD format is inadequate?

    Actually, you too had some confusions, but we'll let that slide. Seeing as how you agree that the PS3 is the better console. Granted, it's a little slow on sales, it's expensive, and it "has no games" but all that is RELATIVE. The PS3 has the better hardware, and it has less malfunctions, these are facts which are also relative, but they matter more when you want to decide which console is better. Why do the matter more? Because, sales have no reflection on the console's quality, nor do the games because that too is merely an opinion of the costumer, and the price is just the same.

    It's prettier, it's worth it's money, it has better games - All opinions.

    Blu-ray isn't good - opinion, Blu-ray is the better format - Fact. Why? Because you can store more in it, you don't need 2 cds, HD movies (non-existent on DVD) - all facts. It's also harder to work on, but that doesn't make it worse than DVD. Maybe for you personally, but are you a developer who actually gives a crap?

    Another fact is, Blu-ray is beating HD-DVD, or should I say has beaten... The 360 will eventually fall short in terms of graphics (I'm not saying they SUCK! I'm just saying the PS3's will be better, that's all!) because, the higher the resolution, the more space it takes. Blu-ray will eventually be needed to make crispier sharper images. MGS4 came close, but I think the PS3 can do MUUUCH better. (That's also not to say MGS4's graphics suck, they freaking rock! closest to real life I've ever seen in a video game). Hell, Rockstar even said so.. they said DVD9 gave them a hard time. They said it was much easier making the game on Blu-ray. Which completely annihilates your point of "It's easier to work on DVD" that IS true to some extent, but the space is an issue when it comes to larger games.

    Anyway, enough rambling. I made myself hungry...

    I don't have an issue with sensible people like yourself, who can clearly differentiate between fact and opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. What really annoys me is when people like Malco_Vincenzo blatantly confuse the two.

    With regards to the RROD, there is a certain failure rate that is expected with any electrical product. I have had hardware problems with my PS1, PS2, PSP and 360. There is no denying the fact that the 360 has had a much higher rate of technical failure than normal in the past. It does seem however, that this has largely been rectified with the newer 360 models currently out on the market. I am not saying that none of them fail; just that it seems that MS have finally managed to get their failure rate back down to normal levels. And anyway their customer service is excellent, and yes I am speaking from personal experience. With my Sony products on the other hand, I've had a devil of a time getting them fixed.

    Abuot the RROD, what do you mean "not supposed to be"? Is it still happening only to a lesser extent? If so, it's still out of the question for me to spend money on it. That's not to say I don't want one. If I was offered one I would gladly take it. LOL

    I believe the guy meant UK... let's assume he's not THAT dumb.

    2) RROD is not supposed to be an issue with the new 360s.

    3) Maybe that person ment Europe and not just the UK. Europe is a bigger videogames market than Japan.

    What this basically means is; The Wii will not be the next PS2... nothing will, apparently. And damn, if it went down so early (It took like 8 years for the PS2 to stop selling decently, and it is still selling pretty good), it means they will probably die out pretty soon. Like I always said, the Wii is a fad and nothing more. Or should I say, "WAS" a fad? Now on to the PS3. As my first guess about the Wii was pretty much DEAD ON, I will assume this next piece: The PS3 will continue to sell in an average of 200K per month, excluding hollidays and all that. The 360 will most likely keep it's numbers, making it a nice side dish for the PS3. I couldn't imagine a more perfect living room, home theatre, Multimedia center without a 360 in that bunch either. I'm still affraid to buy one - that RROD thing is scaring the crap out of me. I won't be able to replace it for free where I live. The 360's sales will finally drop below the PS3's once HD becomes "SD" (get it? ) worldwide, and Blu-ray becomes a standard too (DVD - history repeats itself). The PS3 will keep selling decently afterwards. That's what Sony meant by "FUTURE", I believe.

    OH and BTW, Whoever said the UK is the second largest videogaming market was SOOO wrong. How can that be if Japan is bigger in Population than the UK, AND it is the ORIGIN of freaking videogame consoles??? SRSLY man do some research before you spit s***...

    And finally, will people please stop commenting on these articles?? Stop trying to interpret it the way you want it to be read just because it hurts your feelings (that's a little strange on it's own). There's no truth. The only reason I commented was just to set some things people said here - right, and give my prediction of how things will transpire, don't like it? KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!

    I am not using Wikipedia buddy. I am using NPD numbers. NPD has no affiliation with any company; Sony, Nintendo, MS or otherwise. They would be a much more reliable source of sales figures than PR spin from any of the 3 manufacturers.

    Secondly you have absolutely no idea about programming or software development. Media format does play a role in development, but it is nowhere near as important as the hardware that the developers need to work with, the API that is available to them, the various tools/libraries they have access to, etc. I recommend you learn how to read and write first, before you go on to comment on something as complex as game development .

    That wiki is reliable. You can confirm the sales figures looking at the NPD results printed by Gamespot, 1up or IGN. In the US PS3 sales have dropped over the period December to February. If you go to VGChartz you will see that the 360 has outsold the PS3 by around 2 million units since the PS3's release. And dude please don't tell me you think that Sony PR spin is reliable. ROFLOL.

    Media format does not have much to do with game development. Differences in computer architecture, and programming API are much more likely to be the cause of any difference between game development on the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

    Lastly, if you think that what you have said about MGS 4 is fact, then I recommend you check up the meaning of the words "fact" and "opinion". There is absolutely no proof (or way to prove) that MGS 4 is "the most graphically powerful game on the PS3". Seriously, just because you are 12 years old doesn't mean you have to be that immature. Get over yourself .

    both the 360 and PS3 have been sellking evenly if you take out the ONE YEAR ADVANTAGE that the 360 had.
    and as for proof of games being made for 360 first then ported to PS3, that's common sense man. Think we've been on the DVD format for over 10 years. Devs are taking the lazy route and making games for the easier format first and simply porting them to blu-ray. why make it harder for themselves? that and the 360 has been out for a year before the Wii and PS3. DVD9 is just easier to work with than Blu-Ray.

    You should check your figures first dude. The PS3 US sales for Dec 07 to Feb 08 are: 797,600, 269,000, and 280,800 respectively for a total of 1,347,400 units. The PS3 US sales figures for Dec 08 to Feb 09 are: 726,000, 203,200 and 276,000 respectively for a total of 1,205,200. As you can see the PS3 has sold less than it has a year ago in the US for 3 consecutive months resulting in an overall sales drop of around 10.5%. On the other hand both the Wii and the 360 have increased their sales over this same period.     Well how do you know that these multiplatform titles were developed for the 360 first? Where is the proof? For that matter the Orange Box was developed on the PS3 concurrently with the 360 version, by a different development team no less. Let's not forget about games like Virtua Tennis 3, Virtua Fighter 5, Unreal Tournament 3 and Assassin's Creed which were all initially going to be PS3 exclusives or were released on the PS3 first, and have been successfully released on the 360 without any graphical hitches. As to MGS4 being better looking than anything on the 360, well that's your opinion. I can name games on both the 360 (Gears of War 1 and 2) and the PS3 (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Killzone 2) that look better than MGS4. Once again this is only OPINION.

    I haven't bashed the PS3. I have only stated facts about PS3 sales. Outside of this last month in Japan, the PS3 is not doing that hot in either the US or Europe. And while I do prefer the 360, I also own a PS3 and I do like some of it's games. Just check my review scores on my profile page if you don't believe me.

    this is because they make multiplatform games on the 360 first then port them to the PS3. we all know that ports lose graphical power that is never fixed. The Xbox MGS2 port for example actually looked WORSE on the xbox than the PS2, AND was laggy. This was when the xbox was the console graphics king.
    We still have yet to see a 360 title that matches MGS4's graphics.

    And if the PS3 hasn't given you any problems, then why are you on your second one? Didn't you even say in your blog that Sony's tech support is "incompetent" and that "360's are not the only systems that die"?

    Fight night round 3 does not look better on the 360. And Fallout 3 those are the only 2 current games that look noticeably different. All the other multi-platform games look the same on the 360 ad they do on PS3.

    Unfortunately this isn't the case. In the US Wii sales during the Christmas period of 2008 were higher than they were during the Christmas period of 2007. In other words it is getting more popular. The same holds true for the 360. The PS3 was the only home console to see a decline in popularity during the holiday season.

    I am a big fan of Sony but come on. The PS3 is like Windows Vista. They just need to be thrown away and start over with something that actually makes sense.
    I own 1 original Playstation, 1PS1 with lcd screen, 1 Playstation 2 original and plan to buy a PS1 Slim. I also own a PSP 2000 with CFW for PS1 games and love it.
    I am sorry but to me the PS3 and DS are both garbage and yes I have owned both. I really really hated the DS.

    @yxingpot: Yeah, people can FILE any suit they want, and a judge can dismiss it as frivolous. That, for the record, can range from being a waste of time, to censure. Also, only people who have access to meaningful legal resources and have a high degree of intelligence are going to be able to craft something as complex as a class action unless they're part of a law-firm. So, what you're saying, really... is that anyone can HIRE a laywer(s) to file a suit on your behalf. That costs money, and believe it or not, lawyers try not to take on losing cases.

    @ there seems to be alot of PS3 bashing comments here. I don't know why seeing as how sales for the PS3 and 360 were pretty mush pound for pound in 08. The only reason the the 360 is above in sales isn't due to the price. It's because it came out a year before and everyone wanted halo. I'm not trying to take away from the M$ rep but seriously consider all of the facts before you bash ONE company. remeber how much money M$ lost on the 360. Around 4 billion. and another billion was lost on the 360. Sony losing 2 billion in a market that they owned for 2 generations isn't really hurting them. If price were a factor gamecube would've won.

    PC was the first cutting edge console. If we didn't have the PC we'd probably wouldn't have cutting edge technology.

This year had MadWorld, and still has the Condiut to look forward to. But really how great is the conduit going to be. Just another FPS in the large sea of other FPS games. I'd also like to point out that the PS3 isn't the only console losing billions. The 360 lost M$ 1 billion dollars and only turned a profit in 08.
    Another fact, wii games have to sell over 1 million to turn a profit. Not that many of even the First party Wii games have done that.

    Crysis on pc will be one example. cryengine is so advance that there is no console engine that has come even close in producing graphics as good as crysis and even the new cryengine 3 is much better than any other console engine.

    1) I never claimed to be a hardware expert. You have. And the degrees I have mentioned are far from imaginary (unless you are a 12 year old kid who has never heard of them). To truly evaluate computer hardware design you need to have knowledge in computer architecture. You can get that via a Computer Science degree, or a Computer Systems Engineering degree or their equivalents. Simply copying and pasting Wikipedia figures without understanding what they are is frivolous. Then again you are 12 years old after all .

    2) Provide proof that the Blu-Ray drive is essential for gaming. While you are at it explain why both the PC and the 360 have no issue using DVDs for high res gaming.

    3) Sony have lost billions this generation. In fact it is estimated that they have in fact lost more during these first 2 PS3 years, then they gained during the first 5 PS2 years when they were market leaders. MS went into the console market knowing it was going to be an uphill struggle. They have succeeded in that struggle commanding good marketshare and turning a profit. Sony on the other hand seem to be going in the opposite direction.

    4) You don't need to know how to build a console to buy it. Buying something takes very little skill. On the other hand if you posted on some Internet car forum that a certain model of car was poorly designed, most people would expect you to have some knowledge about car manufacturing. Is that really too hard for you to understand. You may be 12, but that is still old enough to have some common sense .

    5) Like I said, you can go a head and sue. Why are you angry with me about that .

    6) Dude if you think that the PC has never produced anything cutting edge in the videogame industry then you truly don't know anything about gaming. The japanese like sleek "fresh" designs, things that are compact and look appealing in their home which is EXACTLY why the PS3 and Xbox360 have not sold as well in Japan as opposed to the US.     Thats cause every household over there already has a Wii..its natural to see sales plummit when everyone owns that console already.

    don't get me wrong i like Wii, but its not a console to be in love with because its games are mostly casual, just for fun, with friends specially a lot of fun. but the games suck you in as much. MGS4 the best! anyone out there reading this MGS4 is DA GAME!

    its not about which is better or worse, its the games that make consoles good. wii is a casual game console where ps3 is a hardcore gamer's console. so the debate should be about ps3/ xbox360 & Wii/..... wii is in a league of its own and about the games ps3 has the best exclusives. to name a few MGS4, Killzone2, Tekken 5, Little Big Planet, MotorStorm ..... and it goes on. p.s graphics is a big factor and wii lets down its user's there

    I used the $500 just to simplify... because PS3 had lot's of prices..60G with $599, 20G with $499, 80G with $399.. so I made an average price...

    If u want to calculate Profit and losses u must estimate Wii production cost that i think it's way under $249

    It is the marginal profit that counts, not sale price. Nintendo is making a profit with every Wii sold. I doubt Sony is.

    because only 160GB PS3 priced at $500.actually standard model is 80GB and priced at $399.
    it means $110,400,000 not $$138,000,000.

    A price drop, plus monster hunter will re-settle the score.

    Well, that's trye. Once Dragon Quest X and Monter Hunter is released on the Wii in Japan, the ballgame is over. There's nothing coming out on the PS3 that competes with these two games except for FF XIII. More people will buy Wii to play these 2 games, then they will PS3 to play FF XIII. With another Zelda game on the way as well, Nintendo and the Wii doesn't have anything to worry about. The PS3 will never catch them. The other difference is Nintendo is making a mint on the Wii, while Sony is still losing money on every PS3 sold.
