The Godfather II was among several high-profile games that Electronic Arts pushed out of its current fiscal year in February. However, even with the extended development time, EA's Redwood Shores studio was apparently unable to cram everything planned for the Godfather II's initial release onto the already-gold game's disc.

Today, the publisher said that the multiplayer mode Don Control will be released as a free patch day and date with the Godfather II's launch. As detailed in GameSpot's just-published hands-on with the mode, Don Control plays out much like the Godfather II's other multiplayer modes. However, in Don Control, two players take leadership roles in their respective eight-man teams, wagering single-player currency on the outcome of the match.

The Godfather II will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and is expected to arrive in North America on April 7, with the European rollout occurring three days later. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

This game is cool. I like mafioso sh*t.The Godfather II it's a mix of Scarface the game and the first Godfather. But Scarface is the best mafia game I've ever play. "Say hello 2 my little friend..." - "I have the money and the yeyo..." - "Nobody mess with Tony Montana" The game Scarface looks like the movie, same thing, very original. The Godfather game there's no Al Pacino, where is he!? Not in the first, not even in the second. Al Pacino would give more power in this game.

Capcom could stand to take a lesson from its peers. It's a cold day in hell when EA is looking like the good guy in comparison to another company, not that I'm complaining. Good form EA, good form! *thumbs up*

Hopefully the Gamespot review comes out at least a few days after they download and play the multiplayer patch. It seems these days that Gamespot is the only major review site that doesn't trip over itself (and it's integrity) by posting reviews weeks early with incomplete builds or inadequete multiplayer time to get the "scoop" on other sites. Keep up the good work guys.

So capcoms the pos charging for versus mode and EA does not...wow, EA may have got some business from this guy.

This is what happen when publisher pushes the developer to finish the game in time.

    What happen to Godfather 2?
I do know Godfather 1 gameplay was 3rd person (cant confirm, after an error with Vista, it just wont run), and was certainly not RTS view!!

Anyway, im grateful enough EA is becoming nicer,
and disappointed with Capcom with it's greedy DLC.

Well, I think after the news that EA said" we just dont have hits"
They start thinking about us.. wohoo~

    Oh wait,
They did give most update for free,
unless it is some add-on for costumes or guns..
Army of two DLC for 3 mission are free,
    I was like WTF?

I must have severe vision problems underneath this mask because I am seeing EA offering stuff for free and capcom charging $ 5 for a Mulliplayer mode in RE5 which should have been included in the games disk.

Waitaminute... first EA gives up free DLC for Mercenaries 2... now free multiplayer for Godfather 2?! What is this, Bizarro World? Seriously, smooth move, EA, I hope this sparks up a trend back to the way things used to be (you know, unlockable costumes, items, and modes for finishing a game?) before the advent of online gaming made DLC such a horrible nightmare.

  • moppy43

    Posted Mar 18, 2009 3:40 pm PT

Wow, I guess EA decided to read the thread about Capcom's charging $5 for RE5's "versus" mode, and decided to steer clear of that PR nightmare.

Yes, you can make the argument that the game was just about done even before it was delayed, so they SHOULD'VE been able to put this in the game. However, this patch will be available on day one, and they're not charging for it, so I see nothing wrong with this.

Hi everyone. I seem to have stumbled into some kind of parallel universe, and I'd really like to find my way back home. In my world, EA never GIVES anything away for free as DLC. And Capcom usually doesn't charge for minor DLC additions. Your world FRIGHTENS AND CONFUSES ME!

back in my day, we would do this thing called a boycott when a product didn't meet a standard. this seems to be happening more and more in the gaming industry and the youth in this country are too complacent to care. Arguing with me on a forum doesn't change that fact either. I won't buy games anymore that have these glaring technical flaws upon release.(Sarcasm here) At least they used to have the decency of not letting us know their product was broken when it came out.

There's nothing like buying a new game on the first day only to discover you have to wait to download a patch. However, at least it's adding a new mode and not just fixing it because the game was too buggy to start.

EA LIKE TO GIVE IMPOSSIBLE DEADLINES

I know because my dad knows someone who used to work at Black Box, and he claimed how they all hated what EA did to Skate 2 and the last NFS. He says they didn't give enough testing time and did not respond to any of the developers' complaints in favor of a small budget.

It's probably multiplayer online too. So making you have to download the patch is pretty smart. Now for the Capcom comment. I still think of them as great game makers but some of the decisions are just greedy lol. It's like making a Megaman game where you have to buy the weapons after beating a boss. lol. Good job EA and making this free. We look forward to this patch (and many more) to come.

So, if you're not online... why in the hell you want multiplayer mode???? The pleople cry these days even about thing that the will never use and don't need anyway. Sad.

Free, take nothe of that Capcom. FREE mode. Even EA who are a greedy Bastards are releasing this free, a new mode added to the final game... you make the same thing, a new mode that you not manage to get on the final game and you released it a couple days after launch... for 5 bucks.

It's official, capcom are even more greedy than EA.

OR... maybe EA's plans was copicat Capcom and release this in day one for a price, but looking at the mess capcom did and the hate of the fans... they decide for the sake of their health release it for free...

Either way, is a win for us: gamers. Stop the insane DLC milking!!!!!

    Posted Mar 18, 2009 11:27 am PT

because rofl it probably wasn't release quality before the game went gold. The game has to start being produced long before the game is shipped and sold in stores. A "gold" (read finished) copy of the game is thus sent in, anything after that must be added later as a patch or DLC.
