Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles sequelized on Wii

Famitsu reveals Capcom mystery game to be RE: The Darkside Chronicles, a follow-up to 2007's on-rails shooter for Nintendo's console.

On Friday, Capcom teased word that it would be making "new game announcements" as part of its Resident Evil 5 launch party in San Francisco on March 12. The information quickly sparked a firestorm of speculation, with comments made by Capcom associate product-marketing manager Matt Dahlgren appearing to indicate that the publisher was planning on announcing a Wii installment in the Resident Evil: Code Veronica universe.

As it would turn out, that speculation was only mostly right. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reports today that Capcom is at work on Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Wii. (Scans of the announcement were obtained by Kotaku and translated by GameSpot.) However, instead of pulling its inspiration from Code Veronica, Darkside Chronicles will be a continuation of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, an on-rails shooter released for the Wii in 2007.

Capcom has tasked Bullet Witch studio Cavia with developing The Darkside Chronicles. The game will be set in Raccoon City, last seen in Resident Evil 2, in the year 1998. Players will be tasked with cleansing the city's zombified denizens, who have become infected with the T-virus. As with the original, The Darkside Chronicles will accommodate cooperative play for one or two players.

Famitsu did not reveal a release date for the game. Capcom is expected to officially announce the game in the US tomorrow night as part of a series of Resident Evil 5 midnight launch events.

Umbrella Chronicles covered 0, 1, 3, and the fall of Umbrella. What is there for Darkside to cover... 2, Code: Veronica, and...? I wonder what they have planned to make this game actually last like Umbrella Chronicles did...

Man, have you never played any RE????
    Nooo! That's not right!

OK, now you must listen carefully: YOU MUST PLAY RE.
Get up right now, find a RE game and start playing it.
start with the RE Remake for GameCube, then go to the RE 0..

When you finish it, tell us what you thought

umbrella chronicles really took rail shooting to the next level with its inventory balancing and ability to look to the sides, heres to hoping this will do the same.

    I'm a RE fan... I'll be purchasing RE5 tomorrow.
However, I will not be purchasing this.
    You know what that means?
It means I STILL have no reason to brush the dust off my Wii.

For a platform that was created by a company that was slowly weeding itself away from any type of violent title, Nintendo sure is going back to blood and death...for kids! I remember they didn't want any blood shown when they released Mortal Kombat for the SNES.

Another on-rails shooter.....*sigh* My dream of another REmake will have to wait longer. Come on Capcom. The Wii needs an actual survival-horror game.

Wait, wasn't Racoon City last seen in RE 3? Ok, it wasn't the best game ever, but not worthy of being totally dismissed like this either.

Back on topic. Another on-rails-shooter. Whoopy-doo, just what we need! Meh...

i loved RE-UC, but this is a complete POS!!! Come on Capcom/most 3rd parties, try making real games for the Wii, like Madworld, Deadly Creatures, Conduit. They will sell just as well, if not better. This is what gamers want, not more cash-in games.

I don't know how anybody can support this... This is laziness at it's peak and a big screw you to real RE fans that owned a Wii. This aint going to stop either. I doubt you guys will ever see a real RE game and not some toned down RE game.

New Resident Evil for the Wii?? While they are at it why don't they release one for the Atari 2600 I still have the lying around somewhere......what a waste of time. One step forward three back Capcom. Good for Wii owners I suppose........can't quite see Resident Evil up on the shelf next to Wii Fit or Wii Sports though...........

"Wii installment in the Resident Evil: Code Veronica universe."
Sorry, this is incorrect. Technically action of RE code: Veronica takes place in the same universe as other RE games.

Well, I liked Umbrella Chronicles, personally, and with House of the Dead: Overkill already out, and this and Dead Space: Extraction lined up, it seems the Wii will get its share of on rails shooting action this year.

  • InsultToInjury_

    Posted Mar 12, 2009 3:21 am PT

As much as I am a fan of series and I will buy this game just for sheer RE dedication it sounds terrible. House of the Dead in Racoon City! Not cool. I enjoyed Chronicles - it tied up a few random loose ends. It was good for what it was but - "cleansing the city's zombified denizens, who have become infected with the T-virus" just doesnt sound too good.

This is not what I was hoping for. However, I must say, when I rented the first Umbrell Chronicles, I was very surprised in how fun it was. Although I prefer RE in 'RE4 Wii Edition"' style of play, I'll still give this one a rental.

I'm all about the Darkside Chronicles. I enjoyed the first and will be getting the next one. Less than 24 hours to go for Resident Evil 5. Can't wait.

  • freefaller21x

    Posted Mar 11, 2009 10:26 pm PT

The first one was a nice deviation. All these different styles to choose from for one series. It's an interesting perspective. Gave people a reason not to hate capcom for making them wait the extra year for RE5...which was totally worth the wait, thought I'm still waiting...ARGH! Less than 24 hours.

SIDENOTE: Holy F***! Capcom's got DLC for RE5. I guess they did throw all their cards in the hat. Multiplayer could be sweeeet if done right. Now I gotta another reason to wait...Ugh. At least I'll have a good distraction now.

LOL! For once I can actually say that I saw that coming. Its nice that they pulled a quick one out of their hat like that I suppose. I have no problem with another on-rail shooter, but I just wanna ask one thing though: PLEASE make this one just a tad bit longer than the first one. I loved Umbrella Chronicles & its an excellent way for those who have played the previous RE or are just new to the series cuz ya can catch up on old times of what happened or find out what happened in the past.

If they put more side missions that would be great! I want more Wesker scenes, but I personally think this would be the game to kinda make HUNK shine a bit. They should definitly put HUNK levels for this one in my honest opinion. Explain where Billy went after he separted ways with Rebecca. Give us an incite for who Ada is really working for. Heck I be happy to do a couple of levels that shows the forming of the BSAA. Just PLEASE give us more than like 25+ levels cause the first Umbrella Chronicles was just a bit too short for me.

This is a swift kick in the balls. I am not a "Very happy Wii fan" On rail shooters are just a lazy developers version of a FPS (Disreguarding HotD because thems are good On-Rail shooters) I would have been happy with absolutley anything new resident evil, as long as it was not another On-rail shooter. I hate the fact that I know I will buy this cause I'm a completionist, but I will never play it. an RE On rail shooter for DS, now I would be happy for that....

so any ways screw this on-rail sucks, but I will still buy it cause its RE thats the only reason I will buy it.

The Wii is turning into the console for on-rails shooter fans. I would of liked to see a traditional type of RE game whether it was a remake or an original entry.

  • Mush_Mouth

    Posted Mar 11, 2009 9:35 pm PT

Personally I really like rail shooters, and granted RE: UC wasn't as fast-moving as a House of the Dead title, it was still lots of fun for RE fans. Rail shooters seem to be love-or-hate with people but at the moment it seems to be one of the only genres on the wii that seems to be improving. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll move onto the more mainstream first person shooters next.
