What we heard: Twitter's a wonderful invention. Basically, everyone can publish a comment for the whole world to see as soon as it pops into their head, even if that information is utterly inane or entirely confidential. For the BBC's Jonathan Ross, the tweets in question mixed a little from both categories.

Last night, Ross attended the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards ceremony for video games, at which Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy walked away with top honors. Closing out the evening, Ross said in a succinct 140 characters or less, "Goodnight all. Must go to bed. Got asked to do voice in Fable 3 tonight. Subarashi. Oyasuminasia. Woss out." (Emphasis added.)

However, Ross didn't stop there. Later that night, he responded to a fellow tweeter's direct message, saying, "Yes they are doing it. [Comedian and The Guardian columnist] Charlie Brooker said he would do a voice for it to [sic]! Great fun!!" The following morning, Ross tweeted his somewhat ambiguous intentions to apologize to Peter Molyneux, before concluding the matter by tweeting, "Yes. No. There is no Fable 3. I don't know. Help me."

It wouldn't be at all surprising if Microsoft and Lionhead teamed for a new installment in the action adventure franchise. The original Fable was one of the Xbox's top sellers, and Fable II has garnered a number of awards since it launched for the Xbox 360 to a warm critical reaction in October 2008, including a BAFTA for best action adventure last night.

Furthermore, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux has previously said that his studio already has the third, fourth, and fifth installments in the franchise mapped out. "We've got plans for Fable III, IV, and V, actually... It's a big story arc, and you can see that if you've played Fable II you'll recognise things from Fable," Molyneux commented in July 2008.

The official story: [UPDATE] It would appear Ross' claim to Fable III fame was a bit premature was a bit premature. "We have no agreement in place with Ross to work on forthcoming projects," a Microsoft representative told GameSpot.

As it would turn out, though, Lionhead is indeed working on more content for Fable II. "That said, it is true that we are not yet done with Fable II," the rep continued. "We are working on additional content for Fable II. That's all we can say for now. We will have more to share soon!"

Bogus or not bogus?: In light of Microsoft's comment on the matter, it seems possible that Ross has been asked to lend his voice to the forthcoming Fable II content. Being that as it is, the Fable franchise is one of the most popular Xbox 360 exclusives--having sold some 2.6 million units to date. As such, don't be surprised if and when Microsoft and its internally owned Lionhead Studios do announce a new installment in the franchise.

Wow, a Fable III would probably be good. Also, it makes good financial sense. If something does very well, you don't just give up on it, you milk it for all it's worth (and more, if you're Microsoft) so I wouldn't be very surprised to see a new Fable game out - in fact, I'll keep a very close eye on next year's E3, because that would be the logical time to announce it, if indeed Fable III exists.
I never thought I would say this, but I'm relying on the greed of Microsoft.

I have to say with all of Molyneux's big talk of Fable 2 he had nothing to back up all his B.S. about the game being so great. Biggest waste of time. I mean common the boss doesnt even fight you... You just one shot him or the Pirate guy does. And the ending of the game was absolutely terrible... Pick one of three cards... Bam the end... Fable 3 better be as epic as Mass Effects story line for me to even look at it.

After Fable 2, Fable 3 is going to have to be freaking virtual reality if Molyneux wants me to give money to him again.

I really enjoyed fable and I like fable 2 quite a bit as well. However I will admit that from watching my brother play through it, it seems to be missing something that made fable so epic. May be its the boss battles or the way the story played out, I'm not sure.

Don't get me wrong, fable 2 is very fun and I recommend it to any rpger but I would like to see a little more done for the next one.

Also, don't be surprised if the next one is already in the works. Generally speaking game developers have one or two weeks between projects, so if the company sees profit in another installment then its a good bet that the next one is already on paper.

I really dont care about fable III right now because i still have yet to really have an epic battle in fable II. say like the Arena fight in first fable. I mean that wasnt even a fight against whats his face in the end of fable II, i mean i cant even remember his name it was so insignificant. Im not saying fable II is bad because I really did enjoy playing through, i just dont have much reason to play through again without anything to really wanna try again so make a DLC i wanna actually struggle with, maybe make the skill base even larger if possible

If they do make a 3rd Fable, they need to make the gameworld at least the same size as Fallout 3 / Oblivion at least.

I don't get why everyone thinks it's too soon. They probably actually started on Fable 3 after if not before the launch of Fable 2. It is never too soon to start a new project considering how long it will take. Is there a certain period of time they have to wait to make it 'ok' to do? It's not like they'll be releasing it next year and then a few months later Fable 4. These things take many years to produce. Nothing wrong with starting now considering we won't see it until at the *very* minimum of 20013.

I expected more too. Fable was such an amazing experience, but Fable II....
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing any Fable II lovers.

    ivan:
They already explained what happened in Fable 2. I won't go into too much detail, to avoid any spoilers (although anyone reading this should probably already have the game). Oakvale was ruined by Reaver, and turned into Wraithmarsh (and it tells how in the game). The Guild was basically burned down and destroyed by an angry mob (it tells that toward the beginning of the game).

Why would anyone hire a guy with a speech impediment to do voicework? Unless of course there's a character who's a self-regarding nonentity with a fruity dress sense who likes to discuss his masturbatory habits with people, that only Ross can fill.

Hopefully Fable III will be set in the OLD Kingdom; the story outlined there is very interesting. What is intriguing is that Lionhead has III, IV, & V laid out. I wonder if one of these stories would take place in Albion's Space Age. Looking forward to more Fable, too bad it has to be released on DVD media, storage problems will abound for it.

Reminds me of the time someone from eastern europe somewhere said his orchestra had recorded the soundtrack for Diablo3. I remember reading that story about 5 years ago and D3 will probably not make it out this year.
It's not news that they will be making Fable 3, recording the sound hardly suggests that the game is fully in development. I expect nothing more than a *shrug* from Lionhead and Microsoft.

RavageGT: The fable games have a very fun first playthrough, but you just don't really care for it after that

This includes almost every story-driven RPG. The experience is what conuts. Those who want replayability would pick up a shooter or a strategy game don't you think?

Haha he spilled out classified information,
"Yes. No. There is no Fable 3. I don't know. Help me."

    That was funny,
Anyhow they should be working for Fable 3 right now,
The more years it took to develop the better the result is.
I hope they Fixed the movement, Fable 2 movement was a bit too weird,
and of course, Fantasy like Armour not some Masquerade clothes for god sakes.

I wouldn't mind seeing another Fable game for the 360, rather than having to wait another console generation. It does seem early for them to be signing up voice actors, though. I'm leaning more towards DLC.

I wouldn't be surprised if they put out a new one with minimal gameplay changes like what happened with Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Molyneux is pretty high on Fable II and might think the games good enough to just add a new story.
