Last week, 2K Games soft-launched a teaser site for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams, the follow-up to the 2007 award-winning underwater adventure BioShock. As with most teaser sites, Somethinginthesea.com aims to generate hype through mystery by offering only a few clues about the game. In this case, the site shows a map of the Atlantic Ocean ringed by a series of newspaper clippings detailing the disappearances of young girls in seaside towns.

Invariably, said vanishing is accompanied by red lights in the ocean and sightings of strange figures emerging from the surf wearing "shod" feet and "miner's helmets." Although the lights and helmet look like the calling cards of the first BioShock's lumbering Big Daddies, eyewitness accounts of "thin" figures with feet smaller than a human male's appear to be contradictory. As a result, theories about "Big Sisters" and "Little Daddies" began to bubble up--rumors that 2K Games has steadfastly declined to comment on. "Don't believe everything you read," one rep told GameSpot.

Next month, though, the public will be able to read about 2K Marin-developed BioShock 2 in Game Informer. The Minnesota-based monthly magazine, which is owned by game retailer GameStop, has posted a scan of its April issue's cover online, which indeed depicts a Big Sister. The new creature is shown wearing a helmet not unlike that of the Big Daddies, with sleeker diving gear fitted to its long limbs and a long-barreled weapon on its left arm. Inside a cage on the Big Sister's back is a Little Sister that looks several years older than the ones in the first BioShock. No "Little Daddies" are mentioned.

i meant instead of rescuing them you can adopt them, you can still harvest them.

also jeremiah237 is right the big sister is getting girls to turn them into what she was because raptures balance is destroyed because in the first game you saved/harvested most of them so there was no one to get adam. And instead of harvesting little sisters you can adopt them because they trust you. Also the plasmid upgrades are different in this game i wont say what but its much better.

I have game informer magazine and it says that bioshock 2 will have multiplayer online but right now they want to make single player their main priority. I don't know if its coop or matches against each other.

Okay, the first game was in 1960 so this one is in 1970. And secondly the only true ending of Bioshock is the good one where you save all the little sisters. But weapons and plasmids at the same time will be cool

Oh sweet. can't wait. Anyone know if there will be multiplayer? Big Daddy deathmatch??

    Posted Mar 30, 2009 1:29 pm PT

true, jeremiah, the big sister is kidnapping the girls and turning them into little sisters. the new thing is that you --as a big daddy, can see yourself in mirrors, see your both hands (plasmids and drill or gun), and when look down you can see your feet.
the early missions will have only two options: harvest/adopt. later on, another option (rescue) will be available --this means a visit to dr. tenenbaum hideout.

    @vexum
this is just a theory....but maybe (judging by the website) the "big sister" is stealing the the little girls, to turn them into little sisters.....iono just a thought

... I loved BioShock.. I'm getting a bit nervous about this sequel. Ken Levine isn't involved and everything is beginning to seem extremely gimmicky.

that's the big sister on the cover not the big daddy.

    COOL!
BTW, at first I thought his backpack was his head - it looked a bit like that assassin droid off Star Wars (IG-8. Imagine a big daddy with a head like that... Cool!

dr. tenenbaum believes it's her fault that the big sister has turned into a monster. is it because she discovered the adam and used the little girls in the adam production process? or did she call this particular big sister back to rapture the same way fontaine called jack?

  • vexum

    Posted Mar 22, 2009 4:12 am PT

negative. you're the first big daddy ever made in rapture --a prototype big daddy. different with the ability to use plasmids. jack story ends with the original bioshock.

question, if you harvested all the little sisters in the original bioshock, how would a little sister leave rapture and come back? something smells fishy _.

    Posted Mar 19, 2009 4:45 pm PT

OK. for the idiots who think its a prequel...

The game is 10 years after the first bioshock. You play as the first ever big daddy. Big Sister rules rapture and if you kill other big daddies she comes after you. Big Sister is a little sister you saved in the first one who returned to rapture and messed herself up.

    Posted Mar 18, 2009 11:59 am PT

    2 things...

The doll she is holding is a representation of the first prototype Big Daddy (who you play as in the game).

And the game is placed 10 years after the first game.

  • Gaito123

    Posted Mar 18, 2009 9:14 am PT

Look we don't know what time period the game is in from what I heard its suppose to be a prequel and a sequel don't know how they are going to pull that off but just the same it'll probably be a great game.

  • FrankFontaine16

    Posted Mar 18, 2009 5:18 am PT

Alpha the cover art is the Big Sister
Yes you play as the first Big Daddy, but that is not it on the cover.
-one other thing, in bioshock 2 you can mix plasmids and use your weapon and plasmids at the same time.
I am satisfied with what I have heard so far about this game. It is going to be awesome.

  • Alpha0026

    Posted Mar 17, 2009 5:16 pm PT

there are no big sisters there is one big sister, but the big sister is the one that called back the little sisters to rapture, and the person on the cover is who you play as, you are the first big daddy in this game, and it is 10 years after the original

  • Rorschach456

    Posted Mar 17, 2009 4:10 pm PT

its not a prequel. its 1967 and the first game was in either the late 1950s or early 1960s so this is not a prequel. if you look at the cover art from gameinformer with the big sister rapture is still all messed up and why would only big daddies exist if there were big sisters earlier on. get the facts.

  • FrankFontaine16

    Posted Mar 17, 2009 3:45 pm PT

Can not wait for this game to come out.
According to gameinformer this game takes place 10 yrs after the original.
You play as the first big daddy throughout the game using his weapons like the drill and rivet gun in addition to plasmids.
You also get to walk on the outside of the buildings underwater, and the big sister is now running rapture.
If she deems you a threat then she appears, then tries to kill you.
Fontaine futuristics will be one of the levels you play in.
Overall from the descriptions and screenshots it looks like it will be awesome. Can't wait

I do believe Dr. Tenenbaum has something to do with Bioshock 2, but if this is a PREQUEL then perhaps the 'Little Sister' riding on back is Dr. Tenenbaum as a kid. Perhaps she was captured by Fontaine or Ryan?

However, Game Informer has pointed out many peoples mistake: Not Big Sisters; Big Sister... Just one.

  • borninvincible

    Posted Mar 15, 2009 11:30 am PT

well the issue of game informer says that the big sister is a former rapture little sister who left and came back... so i doubt its tenenbaum.

  • Aeriti

    Posted Mar 14, 2009 9:28 pm PT

Anyone else think the big sister may be Dr. Tenenbaum? From what I remember during the escape at the end of Bioshock 1, we left her arse down there. Maybe she either got corrupted somehow or just went nuts and is trying to replace all the little sisters that she use to take care of. Just an idea!

whose to say that the big sister isnt actuall who we assume is the big daddy. maybe thats not a big daddy at all, maybe its a big sister.

the big sister is one of the little sisters you didn't rescue or harvest in the first game. you'll return to rapture as the 1st big daddy created in rapture and managed to escape to the surface. you will have the option harvest or adopt the little sisters. later in the game, you can choose to rescue the little sisters.

how can the cover issue be of a regular big daddy stripped of his armor if his hands are a lot smaller, extremely skinny and has no resemblance of the original. i say its a different type of big daddy comparing to the bouncer and rosie

Game Informer seemed to stress the singular "Big Sister". I wonder if they were actually referring only to the little girl pictured. She does appear to be older than the little girls in the first game. Plus, to me, the creature she's riding on looks like a Big Daddy, just stripped of it's bulky armor plating (for a more maneuverable threat)?
