What we heard: Last month, rumors percolated that Climax was working on a remake of Konami's groundbreaking horror game, Silent Hill. If true, the game would be the second Silent Hill title from the UK developer, after the tepidly received PSP and PS2 offering Silent Hill: Origins. Those rumors pegged the game as coming to the PSP and Wii, with the latter featuring new motion controls.

Today came new indications that something is happening with the Silent Hill license, courtesy of the BBFC classification of a game titled "Silent Hill." What, though, isn't exactly clear. When contacted by GameSpot, BBFC reps said that the game outlined in the classification--which features spoilers galore--was for the "Sony PS2."

Slight problem: The first Silent Hill was never released on the PlayStation 2, having debuted instead on the original PlayStation in 1999. (The first PS2 Silent Hill was 2001's Silent Hill 2.) When asked about the apparent discrepancy, a BBFC rep said, "That is the platform we classified it on, but our classification is platform neutral. As long as the game remains identical, [Konami] can release it on whichever platform they want to without [the classification] having to be done again." (Emphasis added.)

Given the rep's confusion about the platform, the "identical" comment offers a little wiggle room. It could be a completely unaltered port, which would indicate a straight rerelease on the PlayStation Network. The term also likely covers ports with slightly rejiggered control schemes, which would be necessary for PSP and Wii versions.

The official story: Konami UK reps declined to comment.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that something prompted the British government to reissue a classification for Silent Hill. Only time will tell exactly what that is.

Additional reporting for this story was done by GameSpot UK's Alex Sassoon Coby.

The original silent hill was great, one of THE best horror games ever made, to see a true remake and not a re imagining like Shattered Memories, which was still great by the way, would be really awesome.

I mean it would be awesome if they did release Silent Hill on the PSN, but I would just like to see a full on graphical revamp, heavy sound or gritty environments like the original, man, I can just imagine what it would look like

I would love a revamped Silent Hill. I actually just finished watching the movie a couple hours ago and was delightfully surprised. Complete with new graphics and a Dead Space like atmosphere and this could be one heck of game, if it is even being made.

I have always hoped that if there is a remake of the first Silent Hill it should be a faithful port of the original game, (some extras may be desirable) but now with enhanced graphics, that was the only part of the original game that I would like to see improved, something like they did with Metal Gear Solid for Playstation and Twin Snakes.

I agree in the fights in silent hill the thing I never liked is they either made you too powerful or too weak depending on the enemy I would like a challenge personally not too sure if this new one will be a challenge or not yet

I hadn't heard that. I would love to play 1-3 again in hi-def but would like if it was with better controls and better fight gameplay.

What do you mean? haven't you heard they are redoing every single thing about the first game?

The reason it can't be done is because Climax would fail terribly in the attempt at remaking Silent Hill. We all know that.

That'd be amazing. I mean, Resident Evil for the GameCube was a spectacular remake and it totally blew the original way out of the water. I don't see why the same can't be done for Silent Hill. This is exciting...

Why bother with a remake? Why did Konami hand over the licence to one of it's greatest horror series? We all know that NOT MANY remakes are successful simply because different designers have different ideas from the original creators, and nobody can truly create the same atmosphere or feeling as the original creators. I wish Konami would grab Silent Hill back before countless versions rip it off.

If they can do as outstanding a job as the Resident Evil remakes I'll be a happy bunny indeed !

Ugh. I hope THEY don't remake this game. The original was great and I don't want it ruined. If they must re-release it, I would rather see it ported to the PlayStation Network.

The only thing we "average" hardcore gamers can do is not spend our money on junk, only then will the people making the games actually take notice.

All I can say is, "If you build it, they will come and buy it." As long as fans of the series keep buying these half finished ports and remakes the companies will keep selling half finished ports and remakes, it is smart business to cater to what the average consumer wants. Sadly, we are not the average consumer mainly because we are a minority, and people don't listen to minorities unless we throw wads of cash at them or wield political power, simple as that.

I think that there should be a stop already at all these classic titles disastrous sequels and remakes. When will they understand that profits isn't everything for a company, good reputation is more important. No more Homecomings, Rooms, Outbreaks, and all these trashes. Please leave us with our good memories intact! On the other hand, here's what they can do:1. Fix the PS2 backwards incompatibility of the latest PS3 models. 2. Fix the terrible way PSOne games look in PS3.

It would be nice if they just come out with a collection edition of 1,2,3 & 4 and put them on the Ps3 & X-box 360 so everyone could play them like the good ol day's. And then bring out some better Silent Hill Games with better story's cause # five had it down on the graphics and fighting style it's just the story sucked.

I really want Konami to remake silent hill already. I was severely disappointed with homecoming, that should not be the last of the silent hill series. I want to see the OG silent hill on my XBOX 360! Holy Hell that would be FEAR IN THE FACE. Can't wait to see how all of this turns out.

TXMostWanted , to bad climax had nothing to do with homecoming. IMHO origins was a better silent hill then homecoming was. save for the mirror world switching... that was stupid

    Ooooo.....now THAT'S what's up!!

Frankly, I'd love to see a remake done of the original SH on some platform (well, at least either the PSP or on the PSN) that's current gen. I gotten tired of trying to hunt it down every few years and jacked up asking prices for it on places like eBay.

Hell, they've been bring back all these other old-school titles, why not SH?

  • mastercleric1

    Posted Mar 12, 2009 8:55 am GMT

    W-O-W!

I've been looking forward to playing the original SH (I hadn't found a copy yet) for years, and I'd also been hoping and praying (literally) that they'd have a Silent Hill game of some sort for the Wii... and this would mean I'd get to do both at the same time! I hope that's the case.

I might get socially-lynched by the fan community for saying this, but because of it's drastic improvements in map features (now it's easier to tell where puzzles and important places are), accolades, further challenge of conservation in the form of very few unbreakable melee weapons, and bringing back one of my favorite ending types in the series (most fans of any game in the series- except 4TR which lacked that -probably know what I mean), Silent Hill Origins was one of my favorites in the series. Nowhere near SH2, especially the Greatest Hits version of SH2, but I found it to be a heck of a lot of fun. But again, that's my opinion.

I would certainly love a remake if they put a lot of care into it, but stayed true to the original, much like REmake did.I still think the first is easily the best in the series.

  • Templar_Bladema

I still have the original and might pop it out for one more go before looking foward to the remake.

I don't get why everyone has to bash Silent Hill Homecoming. Just because people didn't think it would be good, they refused to give it a try. The battle system was much nicer, and it was great to have a character who would climb over crap instead of being stilted. It got so annoying when you couldn't climb over a freaking rock in previous games.

Anyways, about this... I really hope so. PS1's just never seem to work for me, and if I could get a revamp of the original Silent Hill, or even a direct port I'd be psyched.

The only thing I'd want them to do is revamp the graphics. Other then that, it should be left alone and as is.

  • Catza

    Posted Mar 11, 2009 3:54 pm GMT

I have strong suspicions for this one. I would love to get a remake, but it would have to be really without any new crap with it. Its like tampering with nature, if you change something with this specific game, its all over man. Silent Hill 5 is the worst of them all and mostly because of the lack of the original makers. There is several reasons for that, but not the topic right now.
Anyways, loved the first one and remember clearly the panic while playing it. Just a remake for the ps2 would be fine, not too far from the PlayStation but with little better graphics. Ps2 are all so cheap and I still got both of them for sentimental reasons.

Meh, I hope not. So far everything that's been made after Team Silent has been bland by comparison. I mean, it's the difference between name-brand cereal and generic. The first four have a heart and soul that the other two are lacking completely. I really am not looking foward to someone sucking the life out of my favorite of the bunch.
