Mass Effect 2 trailer debuts, BioWare says keep original saves

Over the weekend, Mass Effect fans got their first look at Mass Effect 2, the follow-up to BioWare's critically acclaimed sci-fi role-playing game. Clocking in at just over 1 minute, the first teaser trailer features data from the military record of Commander Shepard, the original game's protagonist, superimposed over shots of his or her armor. (The customizable character can be either gender.) At the trailer's end, the record says Shepard is, in fact, deceased, and the camera pans up to show that his armor is being worn by a Geth, the Cylon-like robot race, which is the game's go-to enemy.

With its implication that the original game's protagonist is dead, the Mass Effect 2 teaser trailer appears to quash rumors that saved games from the first Mass Effect could be carried over to the sequel. However, on the official Mass Effect forums, BioWare community coordinator Chris Priestly urged players of the original to keep their saved games. On the same thread, two other BioWare developers issued similar statements, though none of the three said exactly what Mass Effect 2 would do with the data.

Of course, with Mass Effect having been released on the Xbox 360 and PC, only those two platforms will be able to use saved original games. Currently, Electronic Arts is planning to publish Mass Effect 2 during the first quarter of 2010.The title is being officially designated as "multiplatform," with no specific consoles yet mentioned.

Maybe Bioware just made this teaser to see what the people's reaction would be to decide whether or not they were going to do it or not. I guess that he is not really dead, the Alliance probably thinks he is dead or it is a collaboration to fake his death to the galaxy so he can do things he couldn't do before when he was officially alive (like to get around the law or some such). If he is dead, knowing Bioware, there is a a reason that makes the game even better. Bioware would not risk loosing millions of buyers by making a stupid storyline, not with their reputation.

As some others have mentioned, I'm not sure the Geth *IS* wearing Shepard's armor. Almost looks like a Point of View shot (from Shepard's helmet cam?). Like Shepard is lying on the ground, (a ledge or something), and geth is walking buy, turns, looks, see's Shepard, looks like he's about to fire, and then video feed goes black... Which would make sense: Earth assumes Shepard is dead as this is the last conact we had w/ him/her.

The trailer confused me just like the Assassins's Creed 2 trailer but I am really excited by Mass Effect 2! Just wondering if they are going to keep the love storyline between Shepard/Kaiden/Ashley/Liara? Well, we will just have to wait and see. Can't wait! =D

Hopefully Shepard isn't really dead, after all your squad can die all the time and get right back up as soon as the room is clear. I don't think that geth was wearing the armor at all, it looked more like an armature standing behind him from the shape of its head.

Yes!! Cant wait! ME was just a good game!! I hope you can use your saved data. That would be really cool. Not many games if any at all let you carry over saved data. I hope shepard isnt dead cuz i worked really hard on mine. To bad it doesnt come out till 2010. I hope they fix the combat frame rate issue. That really was a problem in ME 1.

Freakend Sweet so cool maybe we can play with the child of Shepard, and the Geth in the armor is and new kind of techno-virus, or is a normal Geth using the armor by cause fear and desmoralsation (sayng: we kill your Champion, Mwa ha ha)

Why would Geth wear armor? They are already designed to take punishment. But knows2little may well turn out right, if there's a storyline expository twist that reveals the Geth to be -*ack*- sci-fi robo-undeads (*cough* Necrons *cough*). The only other reason I can think of is that Geth can deploy T-800 Terminator wannabes to use as dopplegangers. This second conjecture is probably more palatable than the first.

Maybe that wasn't just a geth wearing Shepard's armor, but Shepard having turned into a geth after a mission gone wrong? Since Shepard is geth-ed he is no longer living and is "dead", thus his KIA report? Wow.. that was dumb...Nevermind

he isn't dead. if they made the whole he's dead at the end of mass effect scene then showed us he's alive and while and dies before the beginning of ME 2, that would be just stupid. Unless this clip is somewhat the end of ME2.

I heard they are using the save data to know which members of your party from the first game lived, and which one died (Gamepro Mag). I have mized feelings about Shepeard being dead, but since he used my personality as a guife, I'm sure it doesn't really matter if its someone new...

Wait, I just got another thought; you know how Shepard's suit, ship, and a lot of human Alliance stuff has the N7 logo? That Geth in the teaser trailer above had the same N7 on it! What if Udina took power (I would love to see that so I can kill him) and got the Geth as his army?

  • LYTEK

    Posted Feb 28, 2009 10:15 am PT

What if, as an idea, Shepard either faked his own death or is in disguise as a Geth somehow? I really don't think he's dead; that'd make no sense at all.

I also think that Udina (the ambassador) is the new villain in ME2; my reasoning is that he's really ambitious, and either ending of ME1 could set that up - if you do paragon, then the council is saved but their fleets are weaker than the Human Alliance's, and if you do renegade, then the council is already dead. Which could lead to Udina taking power. I dunno, just a though.

If the game is about to use my last mass effect save, why they need to '' kill '' the protagonist? if all this is really true, mass effect is the perfect game franchise...and this is not going to... happen..isnt?

  • Corbael

    Posted Feb 28, 2009 12:16 am PT

And to back up my idea. At the end of ME1 who was the most powerful force in the whole world? SHEPARD! I don't know about the rest of you guys character but mine could have taken out a whole damn planet if he wanted to. If Shepard wanted to do something no politician/general/council member could have stopped him he would have had the backing of a lot of people he was a hero. And all it would take is the old navy/or the council to see Shepard as a threat to their control/power. All out declaring war on Shepard would not work because he would have a whole race of people on his side. They would have to fake his death and blame someone else if they ever wanted to have complete and absolute control/power.

  • Corbael

    Posted Feb 27, 2009 11:54 pm PT

I think everyone is jumping the gun with the whole armor thing. First a BIG thing in ME1 was that you could only share armor with your own species. Geth + Human Armor = No workie. All this shows us is the armor that Geth is wearing is of the OLD navy armor. Maybe the new bad force could be the/or someone controlling the old navy. And if there was a human on human war. What would be the best way to break the humans spirit? Fake/lie about their one biggest heroes being dead. And it would be VERY easy to do that if Shepard was locked up on a remote planet or something. Think about it.. It already broke a lot of peoples confidence on here. lol

There was so much thought put into ME1 on the part of Bioware; their track record speaks for itself. There's no way in hell that Shepard would die without there being a damn good reason. Perhaps Shepard's "transformation" is meant to be a torch-passing introduction to the new character; perhaps he's not really dead. Rest assured, it'll be good, but we (probably) won't know until 2010...

It's a long time to wait, but it's plenty of time to go through about 7-8 playthroughs of the original.

Let's not all jump to conclusions now. Assumptions are the Mother of all F-ups. So many saying yes and no to Shep being dead and the Geth with his armor. We have a glorious year of gaming ahead in 2009, and then in 2010 (not too many delays hopefully) ME2 will grace us with more space drama action and suspense. Till then, game on.

It's a teaser trailer. All those people who are already complaining about the game being ruined need to chill. Think before you speak. Also bioware announced save transfers way back when they were making the first one, I guess no one was paying attention. Bioware does not and has never released a crap game. even the sonic rpg they made was good.

now i got thinkin...possibly, u take the view from shepard's eyes, ur armor seems broken off, maybe its even part of the broken normandy? the geth is not wearing the armor, but its just in ur face, the geth notices u and does something, possibly blind? kill?
Just think of shepard lying on the ground, and lookin at the geth and his armor pieces on him.

Are you sure that "his armor is being worn by a Geth"? Maybe I should consult an oculist or something, but to me it seems that there's a Geth near the armor-wearer and at some point, the Geth turns with a gesture towards it suggesting the human SURPRISE look ...maybe facing the barrel of an unexpected gun. Anyway, I can't wait for ME2.

Bah! Now I'm going to have to dig out that game and play it again to make a new save file. Oh, the bittersweet feeling of getting a brand new (and totally blank) hard drive. I'll get to it right after I'm done with Baldur's gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire and KOTOR. Bioware's going to drive me mad someday.
As for the trailer, well, this is my take: Shepard and the Normandy probably got shot down on some forsaken planet in the middle of nowhere and no-one bothered to search for them. So the Navy says he'd dead. You'll probably get to play a brand new character and Shepard will become an NPC you pick up out of nowhere as the wizened omnipotent character that knows and sees all. Kind of like a Mass Effect Yoda on a Mass Effect Dagobah. Remember that people might buy this game without getting the first game, so Bioware's got to come up with something for those half hearted fellows that haven't got save files from the first game.

There's no way they'd kill him/her after players have invested so much time in their characters. It's just hyping it up - there will be some explanation as to why Shep is presumed dead.
