That Valve would offer its upcoming Left 4 Dead downloadable content to PC gamers for free isn't all that surprising. After all, the Half-Life 2 creator has taken a magnanimous approach with The Orange Box, updating the multiplayer-only pack-in Team Fortress 2 with new maps, class abilities, and achievements on a regular basis. Those same updates, however, come at a price for those who purchased the Xbox 360 edition of The Orange Box--and are still unavailable.
With Turtle Rock Studios' Left 4 Dead, though, Valve has achieved a coup of sorts against Microsoft, which Gabe Newell blamed for The Orange Box DLC surcharge on the Xbox 360. The publisher said today that both PC and Xbox 360 owners of Left 4 Dead will receive the upcoming DLC for free when it goes online this spring. The content update, titled the Left 4 Dead Survival Pack, adds in the titular multiplayer mode as well as two full campaigns for the versus mode.
According to online reports, survival mode tasks up to four players with surviving wave after wave of onrushing zombies across a dozen or more maps. Survival times are then logged, as players compete against others to see who can outlast the zombie infestation the longest. As expected, the versus mode update will provide campaigns for the Death Toll and Dead Air scenarios.
