Dead Space haunting the Wii

EA's postearnings conference call reveals Nintendo edition of survival horror shooter; new Battlefield: Bad Company, multiplatform Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno in early 2010.

As part of its third-quarter earnings report today, EA revealed a grim holiday performance and a number of disappointments for gamers who were looking forward to earlier-year releases. PC games The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins as well as the multiplatform Godfather II, all once slated for release before March 31, have been moved to the publisher's next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.

Helping to ameliorate those delays during its postearnings conference call, EA revealed a number of surprises that will join these three games during the publisher's upcoming fiscal year. After emphasizing that EA must make a bigger push to capitalize on the Wii's success, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that a number of its core games will make the transition to Nintendo's best-selling platform, among them last year's survival horror hit Dead Space.

"We're bringing core intellectual properties to the franchise in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform," said Riccitiello. "A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKU this past year."

However, that wasn't the only game announcement that Riccitiello slipped. The executive also said that the publisher's fiscal 2010 fourth quarter, which runs from January 1, 2010 through March 31 of that year, will see the release of a follow-up to EA DICE's well-rated Battlefield: Bad Company. Riccitiello also confirmed that BioWare is prepping Mass Effect 2 for a multiplatform release during the publisher's Q4 window, though he did not indicate whether the game would extend beyond the Xbox 360 and PC. EA Redwood Shores' Dante's Inferno is also expected to arrive during the January-March 2010 quarter.

Riccitiello also narrowed the release window for a number of previously announced games. Fight Night 4, now in development at EA Canada after the closure of EA Chicago, is expected to ship during the April-June quarter. During the publisher's July-September quarter, EA expects to launch Need for Speed: Shift for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, and PC, with Need for Speed: Nitro on the Wii and DS expected to follow in the October-December window.

One franchise that will not see a return next year is Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, Riccitiello did not expound on future plans for the long-running series.

    This is an English site, and that means that you shouldn't speak other languages. This game turns out to be a rail shooter and I think it's worth the time and money to play.

    Now that we've all seen Dead Rising for the Wii, we know what a joke this will be. There's a good reason why Dead Rising for Xbox 360 got a 8.4 while Dead Rising for Wii got a 6.5. Bringing an awesome game like Dead Space, which looks pretty damn good in 1080p, and porting it to the Wii with massively downgraded graphics (480p... eww) and playing it with a remote... it's insulting. All I am saying is the Wii version will be good for a few laughs, but if you want the real experience, play the 360/PS3/PC version.

    First of all.. Mass Effect MULTIPLATFORM?! wow lol.. If it goes on PS3 I'd be happy enough as it is But on the Wii too?!

    Dead Space seems like an interesting idea.. But they need to work on the game and make it pretty enough bcuz I know they can get the gameplay right, Bttlefield would be a perfect game for Wii, if they can get the graphics done.

    The Wii can handle these games, the only that keeps them behind nowadays are the graphics

    just because a horror game worked on the GC doesn't mean it will would work on the wii. the GC was the 2nd most powerful system of its generation (1xbox 2GC 3ps2 4DC), so it was powerful enough to make a scary atmosphere. the wii doesnt even compare to PS3/360.

    @Stabby

    If Resident Evil REmake for the GameCube had that dark atmosphere, then I'm pretty sure that the Wii version of Dead Space will make more than that. FPS and RE4-like shooters are great on the Wii due to the smooth controls.

    I can't see it working personally. I mean the game worked really well due to great atmosphere that helped the gameplay. A blocky version, while might be still fun" wouldn't have that factor.

    I've just realised why the Fanboys are all having a pop at EA and another PS3/360 game going to the Wii, they know the installed base for the Wii will grow a bit more and their fav console will never catch up in sales to the Wii.

    Get over it, gaming is not about exclusives, graphics etc, its about having FUN and we can all have fun on all of the consoles.

    Hmm, not sure what to think of that.....

    On one hand, you just know this is gonna take some performance hits and look nowhere the PS3/360 counterpart--that could piss some off. But at the same time, you have to at least give credit that more developers, in 2009, are starting knowledge there are hardcore 'adult' Wii gamers (that truly play more than just Wii Sport w/ Grandma on the weekends) and least making attempts to give them something more.

    Now ask whether it'll be good, ehhh I don't know.....we'll see.

    Bah, a Dead Space Wii version?!!! All this news means is that the next-gen sequel will either be delayed or hampered by an extra platform to program for or both. Here's hoping that they pawn off development to someone else so they can concentrate on the PS3/360 versions.
    Oh and my one DS2 wish . . . COOOOOO-OOOOOOOP!!!! Online co-op ala Gears/RE5 would be the bee's knees.

    I love EA's company plan.

    "Ok we got this successful game on 3 platforms... how else can we milk this sucker? Oh Ok lets throw it on the Wii and have cool Motion Controls! Sure we degrade the graphics, sound, and will give the gamers even CRAPPIER SHADOWS... but we'll make a few bucks off those Wii suckers who want M rated games!"

    "What? It didn't sell as well as the xbox,playstation, and pc ones? Oh well... Lets just fire 30,000 more employees!"

    Make an original Wii game instead of porting games that is made on a system that has superior hardware just to make a quick buck. But then again it's EA of course they are going to want to milk everything they got on one of the very few good games coming out of their company.

    Porting = the easiest option
    Putting effort into a game = more difficult

    well said BlackDragon110 - the Wii is definitely not such an underpowered system as many people assume.... just look at the graphics on Mario Galaxy and compare them to pretty much all of the other popular Wii games and you'll see Galaxy's graphics are light years ahead because the in-house developers actually took time and care with it.

    Of course, the Wii is never going to give the PS3 or 360 any worries with it's graphical prowess, but that doesn't mean it's something that can be laughed at either.

    @TheAustrian

    I have to agree with you when it comes to Wii ports that most developers did a really shoddy job. But this wasn't due to the limitations of the system; this was due to quite honestly the laziness of developers. When you think about how the average development team size for the PS3 or the 360 would be 100+ people and the average size for a Wii game would be about 25 or less, it's not hard to figure out why the Wii port would be such low quality. Why blame the system when it's capable of more than what developers have done with it? This is one of the reasons that I’m looking forward to The Conduit. This is a game that really shows off the power of the Wii. Hopefully it will become the game that set the standard for in-graphics for Wii games. Of course as gamers we should voice our anger at developers that do a half-@ssed job on Wii ports.

    Now as far as the games that I listed, I only wanted to focus on games that will be released for the Wii in the near future that are hardcore. I didn’t want to list those hardcore games that were already out. I was trying to make the point to those who say that hardcore games have no home on the Wii, that there are a stable of hardcore games coming to the system soon.

    I would like to see EA/DICE fix the 1st Bad Company game I bought it last week and finished the single player and apart from the levels maybe been to long ish and the enemy aiming from a far been perfect. Which is stupid when has anyone seen a M60 machine gun fire bullets that dont scatter?? DICE I believed rushed no.1 online is laggy as hell, some weapons are over powered online but we come to expect that on FPS's, no.1's online needs some serious fixes including the above it also needs....

    Mute option in the team list,
    Better squad communication,
    New Maps and modes to refresh the game play,
    new weapons if possible
    better team balancing and random changing many a time have a team never been switched around which would make the battles alot more interesting and bit fair.
    Level cap upped from 25
    Certain awards in the game need fixing there preventing people from getting platiunum trophy I suppose this may also be on the 360 version plus some need toning down noway can I get 52 kills in 1 round of conquest.

    There just a few not me but I've heard people say when in good games but it's EA and they'll probably not even do anything even if no.2 is set for 2010.

    After playing the Resident Evil 5 demo extensively, I have found what I really wanted was another RE 4 for the Wii. Hopping into RE 5 without the accurate IR controls and the lack of motion to use your knife or reload, I felt like it was a step backwards for the series. This is where my hope for Dead Space Wii begins. Give me the same control setup RE 4 had and the same amount of polish it got, and you will have one very happy customer.

    Maybe a non RE game like Dead Space can pave the way for Winter on the Wii. If you haven't signed the petition for Winter yet, please do: Winter on Wii Petition

    BlackDragon110,
    Good point and well made. My theory was not so much to bash a game for the Wii (as I said I already have a Wii and have several amazing games for it), as it was to shut up an America basher. And I'm all for bringing great games to the Wii, I just think that for some games to work, compromises must be made in order to fit it on the system. If those compromises (like the inevitable graphical downgrade) are backed up by using the Wii's unique functionality for gameplay, then I'm all for it. There are just too many Wii games that are shoddy ports of games on 360 and PS3 (whether they sell better or not is irrelevant) that use crappy motion controls to "enhance" the experience. If they took the time to create cool uses for the controls (like in Metroid Prime 3), the games would no doubt be great, just no one seems to be doing that with ports.

    Can't say I agree with your taste in "hardcore games". House of the Dead: Overkill? Deadly Creatures? The main reason I haven't sold my Wii is simply because of the amazing first party software. What about Metroid Prime 3, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and so on? You seem to have left out the Wii's best selling games for some questions choices.
