Punch-Out Wii due by July, Madworld March 10

Nintendo offers brief release update for a handful of Wii, DS titles; DSi due by summer.

In December, Nintendo tipped its hand on its early-2009 lineup for the Wii and DS, revealing March launches for New Play Control Pikmin and Pokemon Platinum. Today, the publisher augmented that list with more specific windows for a handful of games, as well as for its highly anticipated handheld redesign.

Of note, Nintendo's revamp of the classic NES boxer Punch-Out is now expected to arrive for the Wii during the first half of 2009. Though Sega and Platinum games had already confirmed Madworld for a March release, Nintendo today nailed down the stylized action game for a March 10 release. Nintendo also narrowed the release window for High Voltage Software's anticipated Wii-exclusive shooter The Conduit, saying the game would arrive by June.

Lastly, the publisher also provided a small update on its latest hardware revision for the ultrapopular DS, which has sold 96.2 million units through the end of 2008. Nintendo now expects to launch the DSi in North America sometime this spring or summer. Unveiled in October and already available in Japan, the DSi is thinner than its predecessor and features 17 percent larger screens. The redesigned handheld also boasts two cameras, an SD card slot for multimedia storage, and a built-in Internet browser.

I don't know. I mean, I own and love my Wii but this lineup for it seems pretty shallow to me and seems to be getting hyped up by gamers hoping that they will be great. I can understand this hope because they have been starved for a real game since SSBB was released several months ago I mean, Punch-Out will just be a visual update of the NES game (an excellent game but short). As great as it looks Madworld will only be about 5-10 hours long and have little to no replay value and The Conduit doesn't really bring anything new to the FPS genre. I mean, I'm playing PS3 Bioshock right now and cannot help but compare them. However I am really looking forward to Sin & Punishment 2; a fantastic shooter like no other.

    I dunno,

I'm a little worried at the short time between this being shown and it coming out.

I mean I want it but I want it to be at least as brilliant as the SNES game in terms of control and gameplay.

    I just worrry.

Agreed. Needs to be more than a graphical facelift of the NES version...

Yes, finally a classic game worth playing the Wii again.

I hope they made Punch-Out more expansive, rather than just making it prettier graphically.

    @ qornut:
they do sell wii boxing gloves that the wii mote slides into.
all and all this is great news for both games, more releases before the holiday's makes it easier to buy and doesn't force me to choose.

I hope punch out is like its NES grandaddy. Just better graphics and a mixer of wii boxing and basic game controls.

I am interested to see how these turn out, but I don't know if I am going to buy any of them. Madworld, I don't think there is any gameplay footage yet, at least I haven't seen any so far. Punch Out looks alot of fun, but like somebody said earlier it may be too shallow. Conduit I have seen footage of, and it doesn't seem too bad. Nintendo do need a FPS on the console, every console needs at least one or two. I hope all of them turn out well, just alittle skeptical at the moment. Will wait to see what happens.

With the economy and my wallet in shambles, the last thing I'm planning on doing is replacing my trusty DS Lite with the more expensive DSi with 2 useless cameras. I love you Nintendo, but bad move. You should have sold me the DSi when I had more money to spend.

It's a shame that such an innovative piece of hardware lacks any sign of innovation in it's software.

You know, for all of Nintendo's "originality," they don't seem very original considering that all they seem to have done, for like 20 years now, is rehash franchises that started on the original Nintendo. Is anyone else getting tired of just remakes on new systems? Or will they always just choose to profit off Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Punch Out, etc.? How about an original franchise started fully with the Wii's capabilities in mind?

  • MYellott

    Posted Feb 1, 2009 10:19 am GMT

Yay for more remakes and unoriginality!

I thought I read in another report, that they made Pikmin easier or more manageable if you miss a ship part. If so I am getting it. I don't own the original and I wouldn't be double dipping. I am so in for day 1 on Mad World. That game looks fun. Also, more online Pokemon trading? Yes please. It will probably be my last Pokemon game for awhile. Not been a huge Pokemon follower, but Diamond and Pearl made me go nuts. I put so much time into Diamond.

punchout might be good, though if it sticks too much to the traditional gameplay of the original it might of been better suited to DS instead of Wii, since console sports games require more replayability nowadays.. such as online, assorted exhibition matches with tweakable rule sets etc. Madworld looks good so far, but looks a lot like gears of war, which I own, so it has be really different and unique, and no just in its art style for me to warrant its purchase. And sorry, but Conduit looks like shovelware. I have the feeling its going to be alot like area 51: blacksite on 360, which was pants.

I thought the DSi had 25% larger screens... Have the specs not been reported correctly until now or does this post contain an error? Almost EVERY other site that had any DSi info pre and post the Japanese release said 25% larger screens and such... In any case, I am just curious about the percentage difference.

Also, regarding Punch Out Wii, *dance* Yay!

Wow. This ends the drought of good Wii titles. I've been waiting for "The Conduit" and "Madworld" for a while now. I didn't even know a new Punch-Out was coming out. If it is being developed in-house by Nintendo, then it will be a must-buy. As for the DSi. I don't think I'll be getting one. It is basically a DS with an online store like the Ipod Touch's App Store, but will probably never be as good, due to a lack of free user made apps on the DSi Ware service.

Punchout should be sweet, Madworld looks like it'll either be completely excellent or a complete and total waste of time. The rest is kinda meh to me. Platinum's just a "special edition" version (A.K.A. practically the same game in case you missed it the first time around), I already have my copy of Pikmin sitting in my living room and I just don't like shooters on the Wii.

I am glad someone gave an educated point of view in defense of the Wii.So thanks Mastiffchild, I agree totally. As i said before, i will never understand why people will come onto a wii page and start bashing the system, and vice versa as well. Instead of wasting your time slandering a machine, just go and play some of the games.

This was the first game I played that was impossible to beat on the NES. Tyson(later on Mr Dream) threw too many fight ending single punches and rarely had an opening. You could also never land a star punch on the guy. I always had fun though getting up to Mr Sandman and beating Super Macho Man. The 'Game Genie' finally help me beat Tyson when I was a kid.
I also have a friend that brought out his NES just recently and I've again started making my climb up the ladder. Tyson is going down!!!!!!

Oh Rohan and Halosniper(way to show your love for two ruined franchises-both the last LotR and Halo3 games were big let downs, imo, btw)if it was being left to MS right now , or Sony and ninty followed their lead we'd see loads more studios being closed while they pay for a weeks exclusivity of a demo??!! Zune=I-phone rip off, Lips =Singstar rip off, Avatartars? Ever met a Mii?
The line up for Wii this year is , so far, more impressive in terms of exclusives than 360's and there's some truly innovative titles among them. believe me, though I'm in Killzone2 cold turkey after the best beta I've ever been in(and i've tested for ten years now!)ended and til the game ships I still count The Conduit as possibly just as important to wii owners. If they have nailed the MP, the controls(which should with M+ be better than any keyboard and mouse set up and be as fair as any joypad only one-therefore becoming possibly the truest test of FPS skill yet)and the SP campaign is varied enough it could really cause a reburth of a genre on Wii.
I find your tudes sad, unwelcome and silly -there are also the likes of Fatal Frame 4, Cursed Mountain, Fragile, deadly Creatures, Tenchu 4, Madworld S&P2(to me the very epitome of old school hardcore gaming-contra levels of intense)Muramasa and a slew of others even before Capcom announce a NEW RESI title for Wii at E3 AND Ninty unveil the new LoZ at the same event with bth games out around Xmas!!!
I''m a big Halo fan but the last installment wasn't up to the mark set by 2(still great even now)and I'm less than convinced by Halo Wars (just dopesn't look like the Halo Universe to me)and that plus The downloadables for Halo and GTA are all 360 is offering of substance in exclusive content for 09,> So don't go to the comments of a wii story to moan that Ninty are damaging gaming when all MS want to do is buy successful exclusives and close their own creatives(now we see why Bungie wanted out so badly and Valve have started loving up to both Wii and PS3 despite earlier comments!). Microsoft have a long way to go before they can be said to have done a fraction fo gamers of what Nintendo or sony have. I don't like MS current strategy(love many 360 games though)anmd to say another console manufacturer might not be putting anything back into gaming when MS conduct themselves like they have the last three years is daft and naive.
