Shareholders OK Tecmo, Koei merger

Ninja Gaiden, Dynasty Warriors publishers will be formally combined into single holding company on April 1.

Just over two months from now, the possibility of a Ninja Gaiden-Dynasty Warriors crossover game will be one step closer to reality. On April 1, Japanese publishers Tecmo Ltd. and Koei Co. will formally merge into a single holding company. The move mirrors similar unions such as 2004's marriage of Sega and Sammy and 2006's melding of Bandai and Namco.

According to the Bloomberg news service, the Temco-Koei announcement followed shareholder summits at both companies. Each meeting saw the terms of the merger approved, including stock allocation. Current shareholders will receive one share in the new holding company for each share of Koei stock and 0.9 shares for each share of Tecmo stock.

The Tecmo-Koei merger was announced last December, less than a week after role-playing game giant Square Enix made an unsolicited $200 million bid for the Dead or Alive publisher. Its advances rebuffed, the Final Fantasy XIII maker quickly retracted its bid, then hinted that it remains on the lookout for acquisitions. Since then, though, the company has only announced the formation of a new Los Angeles studio and a Japanese distribution deal with Ubisoft.

Dynasty warriors was alright until i noticed they weren't making any improvements. For nearly what, 6 years now they have been making the same game over and over agian. I personally think if you like the dw series why are you even buying the next installment. THEY'RE EXACTLY THE SAME!!! DW has alot of potiential and i think this will help them. Hopefully Tecmo will help put some originality to the franchise, because it's ridiculous that game developers can make over 10 of the exact same games for around 6 years and not fail. If this is the same new DW game is the same tecmo needs to be slapped and koei needs to commit suicide. Cuz now the have everthing they need to make a great game, money, developers, and 2 decent sized fanbases.

I just want to say dynasty warriors is the ONLY game like it, anyone who likes multiplayer hack-n-slash has NO OTHER CHOICE. But for what DW is, the game's lack of progress and lack of decent advances disgusts me, dw6, reduced numbers of character, AND clones? just stop already!

when will they make "rise of a warrior" where you can actually HAVE troops? Koei has none of my respect, but the ownership of my favourite franchise..

good god! Samurai warriors?! that was bad enough!

IDK why people dog Dynasty warriors.I guess it's the same reason some people hate ninja Gaiden for being very....very challenging.I love both games for everything they are.To be honest Koei at least takes more chances at making new fan's with the decent amount of titles they come out with each year.Namco doesnt seem to make that "leap of faith"very often. But sometimes that's because they take the time on high quality games. But what "I've"noticed is that most of thyere games are very challenging, and most often can be catagorized as Arcade type games.Wich like DW,are not for everyone. So everyone who hates Dynasty warriors, please do us all a favor,& stop talking about it.

Wow! In regards to vietboi89's post, I take it that we should all play the same games you do... to have fun? Then I guess we should all eat the same foods you do, drink the same drinks you do, read the same books you do, watch the same TV shows you do, go to the same movies you do...all so we can enjoy our lives and have fun like you do...Meh!

No Thanks! I will do what I want to do, when I want to do it and how I want to do it...Thank You Very Much! I, unlike you, don't have to rely on, and live my life according to how others perceive how something is, or what their "universal opinion" is. "One man's trash is another man's treasure"!

@Abbandon u think KOEI > TECMO???? am i the onli here who has any expectations?

No wonder Koei makes crappy games because there are still dumbasses who still think they make good games... the last good game they game out with was Kessen 3 and for some reason it seems Kessen has died off and people love the Warriors series because people like to feel like winners even though there is no freaking challenge, Ninja Gaiden pwns Dynasty Warriors, DOA pwns Dynasty Warriors, DOAX completely pwns Dynasty Warriors (because they delivered what was promised), Fatal Frame pwns Dynasty Warriors, Tetris pwns Dynasty Warriors. DO YOU PEOPLE GET IT NOW?!?!?! and if not try checking the review of the latest koei games and no not just GS check IGN gamepro and all those others and ull see the same thing ober and over again because they actually have a universal opinion of what a good game is... FUN!!!

Tecmo has more franchises but Koei definately has more talent. I hope this leads to Koei led game developement of tecmo titles like Monster Rancher, Deception/Trapt, DOA, and Ninja Gaiden but i am scared to death also of Koei using the pathetic talents of Tecmo developers and seeing it negatively affect Dynasty/Samurai Warriors. I dont really care about this merger as long as KOEI keeps pumping out progressively better versions of Warrior games because I cant get enough of them.

Koei with Tecmo...? Sounds like a pretty good merger to me. I see advances in the Dynasty Warriors series as in the Ninja Gaiden series as well. Maybe technology, ideas, plots, and whatever is in the pot can be exchanged to better both games for attracting a wider audience. Once again, this is just my opinion.

Maybe now we'll see a Romance of the Three Kingdoms Beach Volleyball Bowl XLIII. Anyone? Anyone? Okay, it was a bad joke. If any company needed a more western focus, it was Koei, and we can all hope that Tecmo brings that to the merge.

  • otanikun

Awesome, not a bad merger if I do say so myself, just think that this could really be a good thing.
If they hadn't paid you know who, his dues, then this merger probably wouldn't have happened.

There's too many damn mergers lately.
Before you know it the game industry will be like the media/entertainment industry where like 3 corporations own everything and there's almost no alternatives to buy from.

OK, now they're done with their merging mumbo jumbo I suppose it's about time for them to get working on DOA5. The Team Ninja guys (with Itagaki) should work as an independent studio.

  • lightwarrior179

    Posted Jan 26, 2009 10:00 pm PT

Hopefully this will give some financial stability to Team Ninja. I wouldn't care about Tecmo or Koei if they didn't have Team Ninja under them.
I just hope we can see more good DOA and NG games in the future from them even without Itagaki.

I imagine they will probably keep their franchises separate but...

    Tecmo Bowl Warriors!!
    Romance of the Three Ninja!!
Aerobiz Xtreme Beach Volleyball (I really want another Aerobiz game.)
Liberty or Death or Alive (I really want another Liberty or Death game as well.)

  • MegaXtreme

    Posted Jan 26, 2009 8:36 pm PT

It's finally approved. This'll probably see nothing more than cameos, I'm sure. A Dynasty Warriors fighter would be sweet (it did start that way, anyway), but I don't think the merger will go that deep. We might just see Ryu Hayabusa in Samurai Warriors of Lu Bu in Dead or Alive. That's it.
