The beginning of the year typically isn't the most exciting time for gamers, but that doesn't mean the gaming well has run dry. To sway gamers toward their products, Warner Bros. Interactive and Sony have announced this week that free samples have been lined up as precursors to the full releases of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, Resistance: Retribution, and Killzone 2.

Warner Bros. F.E.A.R. 2 demo will begin permeating Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network beginning January 22, while PC gamers can pick up the sampler through the game's Web site. The demo will drop players into the reeling city of Auburn, which was leveled as part of the events of Monolith's first game. Gamers will be able to fight their way through a number of locales in the ruined city. Check out GameSpot's recent sit-down with art lead Dave Matthews and senior software engineer Matthew Titelbaum for more on F.E.A.R. 2.

By way of its PlayStation Blog, Sony reports that gamers will be able to check out an advanced trial of Resistance: Retribution for the PSP two months before its official ship date. The demo is available to those who preorder the third-person shooter through Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, or Game Crazy. The sampler, available February 2, features both single-player action and Resistance Connect, a mode which lets gamers sync up with Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3.

Closing out the year, Sony revealed that those who preorder Killzone 2 through GameStop would receive access to the heavily anticipated shooter's demo beginning February 3. In an interview with MTV this week, the publisher said that gamers who do not choose to preorder the game will still be able to pick up the Killzone 2 demo, but they'll have to wait until February 26. Killzone 2 for the PS3 is expected launch a day later, on February 27.

Before I get flamed to death by ps3 loyalists or (fanboys) keep in mind i have a ps3.. and heres a quote:

Hirai also addressed the complex architecture of the PS3, which developers have openly struggled to get to grips with.
"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?" explained Hirai.

He picked God of War to show gameplay changing during long life of the PS2, and said that sort of learning curve will be the same with PS3.

"So it's a kind of - I wouldn't say a double-edged sword - but it's hard to program for, and a lot of people see the negatives of it, but if you flip that around, it means the hardware has a lot more to offer," he said.

    @Lance-Marvelous:

ummm i think your post is a little misguided. first of all the xbox came out only a yr before ps3 (Sep 15, 2005 ). 2nd of all its not the amount of space that gives the PS3 its problem. Blu-ray can hold more information on a disc but it doesn't mean that the ps3 can process more of it at once. The problem with the ps3 is not even power because t ehcnically on paper it has more processing power than the 360. The problem is its hardware architecture and the CELL processor. It is simply very, very, very difficult to develop for. The xbox has the advantage of being based off of DirectX which is a tried and true (and well understood) tool for development. It is very similar to dev on the xbox as it is for say PC. in fact its pretty much identical but the xbox just doesn't have quite as much power so they have to scale down a bit when porting. I know this for fact as I have friends in the video game business. The other thing is that Sony lost a lot of exclusive titles. Trust me I want the ps3 to rock too but it was kinda dealt a bad hand from the get go. If you look at recent sales you'll find that it is also slipping. Last Nov it sold something like 360k (+/-) units, whereas the xbox sold over 800k. This isn't my opinion, this is just fact. The ps3 could make a game to smoke the 360 im sure, but it would cost so much and take so long to develop on its architecture that most ppl just stick to porting titles to it.

you all should that xbox 360 has about 3 more years games why do some games on the ps3 look so crappy ?? it feels compressed and blurry in comparison.WHY RIGHT? this is really BECAUSE they are watering down lots of the games so the run on both when ps3 starts Really picking up all over the world & then they start pushing the blu ray disk space to full use on the ps3 system. Sony then have games that xbox can't even step too graphically & all so the games will be much long & only ON PS3 sorry xbox fanboys this is TRUE thenamesmillen psn

FEAR2 is set to be a flop on ps3, incredibly bad timing releasing it around the same time as killzone 2. Not sure if it will cut it for PC either, 360 is probably the games best bet since it doesn't have any flashy AAA shooters coming their way anytime soon.

I never really liked the first one anyway on PC, KZ2 is where my $$$ at.

I love Sony's idea to release the demo right before the day of release. It will be like, this game is awesome, im gonna get it!!!! Then the next day everyone runs to the shop lmao. Which gives no time to criticise, not that KZ2 will need any of course!

Just got the demo on the Xbox 360, it's actually a decent demo. It lets you try out a lot of the guns in the game and the mech robot too. It was pretty scary and trippy, wayyy to trippy, and the sound was pretty good. The slow-mo felt weird though, sort of different from the old F.E.A.R. You guyz should download it though, it's good.

@soleil22... I have the same problem. I played the original FEAR on PC and it looked better than this. I don't know what's going on either but I'm disappointed. I don't know, maybe I'm expecting too much? Call me crazy, but I wasn't all that impressed with the graphics. Haven't demoed the X360 version yet though. I need to take a look.

played the fear 2 demo and almost never wanted to play it again i was so scared. i liked pretty much everything about it great psychological horror, great shooting mechanics, and great diversity. one big thing that bothered me was that the pacing seemed a little bit off. i liked in the beginning how you get in a firefight then you hear sgt. fox talking about this woman and it gets creepy. after that though there arent any signals to when the creepy parts should start and i think this is crucial. one other thing that irked me was that when i looked down, i could only see my left foot. then when i walked while looking down, my gun went through my leg. i hope they fix this

ok... so i don't mean this in a way to cause a stir but i downloaded the fear2 demo for both 360 and and ps3 just to compare. why does it look so crappy on the ps3?? it feels compressed and blurry in comparison. this is really kinda starting to irk me because i really thought the ps3 would start pulling thru by now. i hope its just a case of the ps3 demo running at a lower rez and will be sorted by the full game. i'd like to actually get more games for the ps3 but the xbox ones just keep feeling better so i go that direction. pretty cool demo though. it was a pleasant surprise.

f.e.a.r. 2 demo is pretty cool. has some nice hit animations, cool bullet time, nice scary moments, vehicle thing was fun... environments still seem bland, but definitely better than the first one.

just tried the FEAR 2 demo.. its, meh, to me... maybe id play it on PC but not on a console. Apparently there's no such thing as a headshot cause no matter how I slow it down and zoom in and aim between the eyes the enemies won't go down with one shot.
Anyways, hasnt turned my attention away from the real deal of a game for February: KILLZONE 2.

I had to come back to tell the world that I got the F.E.A.R. demo from Qore and I don't if the Xbox 360 version or if they plan on making an updated version of it for release but from the demo on my PS3 I played through it will be horrible because though the graphics are really bad I found that what was worst was the unintuitive gameplay and the simply bad sound effects. I am sorry to say this because I had high expections for this game but the only good thing about the game is the ragdoll physics which come into play when you shoot an enemy and also the slow-motion is kind of cool.

Actually theres plenty of great games due out this year for the 360, although im still playing games that i purchased over 18 months ago (GOW1, R6 Vegas 1, Forza 2, etc, etc), i can therefore understand your pant wetting exitement about getting your 3rd good game after 2 YEARS!

Anybody who flames on these sites about liking one system more than the other, all you're doing is missing out on great games. The true gamers who actually have a clue, have any and all systems and enjoy each one's merits. Me? I love my 360, PS3 and DS. So many great games and so little complaining. Take note people and give your heads a shake. I can't wait for Killzone 2 by the way.....oh and Halo Wars
