With the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in full swing, GameSpot has been in Las Vegas much of this week covering the goings-on. Arguably the biggest event was Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer's keynote address, which revealed some new information about the PSP/PS3 user base and Little Big Planet's 1.3 million units of sales. The company also reported that $1 million worth of items have already been sold via the PlayStation Home virtual world/gaming service hybrid, and that 330 million items have been downloaded from the PlayStation Network.

But though there were some game appearances, the thrust of Sony's presentation was its vast catalog of electronics. Those were on display--up close and muy personal--at the Tokyo-based company's massive booth on the CES show floor. Naturally, the booth had its own PlayStation 3 section.

The PSP was in full effect as well.

However, the most interesting gaming display was over by the vast television area, wherein Sony was letting attendees check out footage of MotorStorm and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue rendered in stereoscopic RealD 3D footage. Without RealD 3D glasses, you literally see double images, given that their slightly askew nature is what makes them 3D. We toggled a pair of 3D glasses over the lens to show the difference, but the footage of the 3D image is obviously not 3D itself.

Right behind the 3D action was a booth showing off Sony's pricey and ultrathin OLED--Organic Light Emitted Diode--television. Although mind-bogglingly thin at 3mm, the screens for the models currently on display are only 11 inches wide, even though they have the pixel density as a 40-inch LCD TV. It costs $2,499.

For those who like their screens larger and only slightly thicker, there was a 40" ZX1 Bravia with a 9.9mm-thick screen on a rotating dias right around the corner. You'll need a fat wallet to own the slim thing, though; it's $3,999.

Next to the ultrathin Bravia was the P Series "Lifestyle PC", which looked like an old Sharp Wizard organizerfrom the future. Its feature set was pretty impressive, though: The base model is just $899.99 and comes with a 60GB hard drive and built-in cell modem that uses Verizon.

Speaking of the future, the highest-tech part of Sony's booth was its flexible OLED display. Though the poor-quality video below doesn't convey it very well, the small circular display first shown is being bent slightly by two metal poles. Along each side of it were two conceptual designs--so conceptual that the two burly security guards shooed photographers away from them. The first looked like a thin booklet with the screen inside, the other was a bracelet that could act as a video display and what appeared to be a sleek, buttonless phone.

The video footage above is a GameSpot News Vlog, and is not official GameSpot video content. For all of the latest trailers, interviews, reviews, and original HD video programming, visit the award-winning GameSpot Live.

ItsEvolution Posted Jan 11, 2009 7:13 pm GMT A tv with a built-in PS3 would be a smart idea for Sony to try, as long as it didn't jack up the price too much.

the only problam there is what about when the new ps comes out ud have to upgrade ur tv aswell as ur console dont see that being very cost effective

Technology is continuing to improve at a rapid rate. It just makes you wonder when to buy something and how long it will be before it is obsolete. However, the price tag always takes a while before it becomes affordable to the mass of consumer buyers. What's next?

a different company (and i dont remember who it was) has already designed a foldable, thin as paper tv. You can unfold it (like a map) and there are no lines in it when it fully opened.

Sony 3d glasses? Thats almost as ridiculous as the Microsoft Table! What next, the Nintendo Rug?

Gotta say though, I liked the thin TV. I'd like it more if it didn't cost more than my car, but still...

Wow! 3D gaming! No one has done that before!
    *cough*Rad Racer*cough*
    3D glasses? Come on Sony....

Sweet looking TVs though. It's amazing that they can make a TV that looks that good but is thinner than a picture frame. Makes the LCD TV I have look like an old vacuum tube model in comparison. And that flexible OLED display looks like something out of Star Trek. Technology has really come a long way.

Jeezy Weezy...I wonder what they will make in like 2010...Touchscreen TV? Man Sony is just making technology go farther and farther...Would be sad if Sony overall gets closed...We wouldn't be seeing new products...Hope Sony Will Stil Go On

Wow...3D, that's amazing! 3D gaming would be sweet, have things feel like they are flying into your room. Almost as innovative as the wii. Now Xbox needs to something new, which I doubt they can do.

very nice, but it's what i'd expect from SONY. sony may be cutting back on some of it's electronics departments, but you wouldn't realize it after seeing this vlog. I enjoyed seeing the Playstation symbol all over the place. anyone who thinks sony is dropping their precious PS3 is off their rocker. the PS3, their tv's and their laptops are where they are putting their $$$. Sweet!!!

This really make WWII much more dramatic than it is eh? The empire did strike back, with a vengence. Who would have thought that the children of the nation that won the war will be down on their knees looking at the products produced by very enermy they have defeated 50 odd years ago, totally amazed.

@Ghoroo go on a website called VGchartz.com and see that LBP didnt sell 1.3 mill..it sold 1.8 mill...stinger made a mistake there...but some people who actually research get the right answers

Question: When was the last time you thought to yourself: "if only my computer wasn't the size of a room, or my cell phone was the size of a brick, a la the 70's and 80s?" Miniaturization is good, it means you can pack more features into the same space. I could think of a whole bunch of applications for a monitor that thin. Aerospace engineering, Automotive engineering, pretty much any field where space is at a premium and weight is bad. Or how about a touch screen TV that a doctor can hold like a clipboard and use to look up a patient's complete history, reference some medical procedure, or control an operating robot?

Question: when was the last time you thought to yourself: "if only my TV was the size of a credit card. It'd make things so much easier!" Why shell out thousands of dollars for something that's more likely to break and isn't actually all that useful? There comes a point where it doesn't matter how much thinner the TV gets because nobody has a use for it being that thin. It explains why Sony isn't doing so well in the electronics department.
