North American PS3 sales rise 40% in '08

Sony reports sales of its console increased 130 percent during 10-week holiday window in the US and Canada; NPD figures point to just less than 3.6 million-unit domestic haul.

With Microsoft touting the Xbox 360's 28-million-unit worldwide sales milestone, Sony has responded by saying that sales of its PlayStation 3 also increased. Speaking with GameSpot, a Sony Computer Entertainment America rep said that the console sold 40 percent more units in the US and Canada than the year prior.

Sales of the console more than doubled during the holiday season, rising 130 percent during the last 10 weeks of 2008. The spike came as a result of the introduction of the new $399 80GB model in late August, followed by the $499 160GB variant--bundled with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune--in November.

Though big on percentages, Sony declined to release hard PS3 sales figures. However, last January, the NPD Group reported that 2.56 million PS3s were sold at US retailers in 2007. If US sales did increase by 40 percent year-on-year in 2008, then Sony sold just short of 3.6 million PS3s domestically during the year. Canadian sales figures were unavailable as of press time, making an overall North American estimate impossible.

As for worldwide PS3 sales, Sony declined to comment on Microsoft's assertion this morning that Sony has sold 20 million units of the console since its November 2006 launch. Reps said such numbers are typically announced as part of the company's quarterly earnings reports, the next of which is expected at the end of this month.

Sony reps also said they had no knowledge whether or not Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer would announce any figures as part of his Consumer Electronics Show keynote on Thursday. European media reports predict that Sony will unveil a "sweeping" restructuring either at or immediately after the Las Vegas event, which GameSpot will be covering later this week.

    before i start getting flamed on here: i bought one of those 7 machines sold in 08. mgs4 and wipeout hd are very good, but 2 good exclusive games (plus valkyria chronicles will be my 3rd) dont equal value for money for me. i like to need more than one hands worth of fingers to count good games with.

    If the develpoers are ambitious then Blu-ray is essential in the future proof of this is MGS4 which it isn't even possible to convert to the 360. Developers will become more ambitious as they become more familiar with the PS3 and I imagine there will then be quite a few games like MGS4 which will be difficult to port to 360

    Its hilarious that this gas-bag Autolycus keeps talking like it will make a difference. There's absolutely no wisdom in attempting to convince people so persistently that they made the wrong consumer choice when in the end, it is a perfectly serviceable, and functional product that those who bought it are extremely happy with. All consoles have their share of pros and cons, and each have their share of controversy. But people make choices for different reasons, and no doubt the majority are happy with their individual decisions. Its stupidity to try to reverse one's opinion and essentially their happiness and satisfaction out of no other reason other than what I discern to be ego.

    GTA4 had to be downgraded a bit, and even put the game release back because the developers were having trouble fitting their game on the 360's dvds. They were able to easily put it all with no problems on a Bluray, and could have added more media to it as well if they could. To be fair, the code for the ps3 cpu did give rockstar some trouble as well, but only because they were not familiar with it.

    RavageGT, you can say Bluray costs almost twice as much for production, but you also have to take into account it can hold over four times as much data. Later Bluray discs can go upward of 100 gigabytes. You would need to purchase over 10 regular DVDs to reach that, or about 8 dual layered 12 gig dvds, which are not cheap.

    I find it hard to believe that Blueray would be a requirement for the future because the charge of a Blue Ray disk over a normal DVD is a little less than twice the price. My parents have a blueray player and they think the quality is cool, but they get frustrated whenever Blueray has to load, update, or whatever. But the only benifit your getting is improved quality, and that's not going to be a requirement in the future, expecially if a disk costs twice as much. It's nothing like how we are switching over to digital TV, because switching over the digital TV is actually going to save a lot of certain resources. Blueray is nothing like this, and standard definition looks fine to anyone who's and average joe.

    @Autolycus i honestly have to agree with Hvac0120 about this one. blueray is going to be a requirement in the future, it is the future, so get over it. this is why the ps3 is a stand alone consol. heres an example of storage for blueray compared to dvd. "three dvd bundle for all extras and 12 hour behind the scenes footage at 720p bandwith for the incredible hulk...... and 1 meesly blueray disk holds it all..... 19 gigs in total that fit on one blueray dik, yet dont even fill up the entire blueray storage." if u try and argue with that your dumb.... oh and your ignorent comment about gta4... if you havent noticed.... it looks like early 360 graphics,... not saying its a bad game cause it rocks, but it looks like crap.... and your quote "Oh and blu-ray is nothing more then more disk space on teh media." is untrue. dvd maximun bandwith that it can project is 1080p. however at the moment, sony allready has plans to be using blueray at 1720p and 2160p "future resolutions planed to be released in 2010".... your next quote "And my point is SO WHAT?     Please post some verifiable credentials for your programming and hardware experience. For all we know you're a 12-year-old running his mouth.

    As it stands right now, you make claims that you can't back up. You claim the PS3's Cell is bad for games, yet the PS3 has some awesome, solid games that look and play well.

    If the PS3 is such a bad gaming machine, then why can it handle anything that the 360 can handle?

    I really don't see why you hate the PS3 so much. I'm not trying to convince you to buy one, but you seem to be trying very hard to convince people that it's a bad purchase decision. When you look at the sales numbers you see that millions of people disagree with you.

    Care to back up that "fact" with some proof. This article says nothing about the 360's sales this year, and as far as I've seen, the 360 has outsold the PS3 nearly every month (in every market, not just the U.S.) for the last two years.

    Assuming you're correct, are you are including the PS3's launch figures in your "two years"? At which point, the comparison is very unfair, given that you're throwing out the 360's extremely high launch figures, while keeping the PS3's. Very well spun.

    A more fair comparison would be to look at the first two years of the 360 vs. the first two years of the PS3. Not the last two years of consoles that are now different ages. Again, nicely spun.

    Lastly, if you're going to use sales as a basis for an argument, the Wii trumps all.

    Okay so if was Bank A financing developer B, I would want to get make as much money as possible in return. The best way to do that is to put the product in the most hands possible. Since I am a bank, I have to spend MORE MONEY to get the same product that I could get on xbox 360, which can also be xfered over to PC with the same code (i know cause i've written for both), which can then be wrapped/converted over to PS3 with a few glitches here and there, meaning that I just took my money and gave the product to a possible 50 million plus people (360 + PS3 + PC).



    But lets say the company I am going to invest for is making it soley for the PS3. Well then I have to wait for a longer time before the product is released (which most of the time quality goes out the window because investors or publishers rush the game to meet a certain date). Now instead of getting into the hands of 50million+ people, because it was designed on a common technology (the xbox 360 chipset) I have just killed over half of my profit returns because now there is 20+ million people.

    That right there is why native games are on the 360. Because there is already a compiler to convert most of it over to PS3, while there is no wrapper/compiler to convert it PS3 to 360, because PS3 is so unique. This is where most of all of the problems stem from and why exlusives on the 360 are far and few. MGS4 was great for the PS3 (i personally didnt think it lived up to the hype), but I promise you Konami would rather have the larger market to make money of off.



    And graphics arent everything, in Motorstorm 1, when a race starts you can see the FPS drop significant, enough to slow down the game. Plus look at Chu Chu rocket for the dreamcast

    yea it takes more effort to make games on the Blu-ray format. but if third party devs dont want to put the time in it just shows you there really lazy and may not be as good as they say they are at making games. look a lot of ps3 exclusives like MGS4 and Uncharted they look better than any game out for the 360, truth

    Um Sony's PS2 was the most succesfull system of all time and it has outsold 360. Nobody is debating that. Again, there are too many inconclusive factors in your "lifetime of the system" theory. Such as most people dont make a decision unti all systems are out. Game release dates make a big difference, hell even the weather makes a difference. So saying that PS3 is more successful because it has sold more units in the same timeframe of 360, isn't actually proving anything. I hope to god, you don't think of a "fact" is something that proves something else wrong.

    A powerful, completely different, unique machine doesnt do any good if the games are too difficult to make. In the end the consumer seems always pay for Sony's bad decissions (UMD, Mini Disk, DRM music, beta and in my opinion Blu-ray (within 3 years I think it'll be gone).

    its simple economics....maybe manufacturing costs are a bit high(but now there is a 35% drop in price of manufacturing due to the crunch) yet the prices are still the same...but every one wants a ps3...which is why demand is high...prices are still high for the ps3..people in this argument dissing sony maybe want a ps3

    ok ...360 is great...but everyone seems to forget that ps3 is a better console...just check the specs and you can decide for yourselves...yes developing for it does have difficulties...but if the companies think more about creating a masterpiece...aka like kojima productions ....games like mgs4 which is better than anything on 360 can be made(doesnt completely use the ps3's power just the capacity of blue ray discs)....its just a matter of taste...if you like simplicity...360 it is...if you want sophistication and a machine that can do it all...its the ps3....and i know this...if the ps3 gets a price cut...it can definitely do better than the 360 and wii...free online gaming..a blue ray player..the best online community in the form of ps home...alot of exclusive titles lined up for 2009...this makes me prefer the ps3 over anything else...and the long term costs of owning a ps3 is less than 360

    The general type of responses to this article have a very fundamental difference that hasn't been entirely addressed. That is a) Is the PS3 a good console? and b) Is the PS3 a successful console?

    It seems that most pro-PS3 comments can be summarized as "I own a PS3, and I love it." The crux of the article, though, is "Is Sony doing an acceptable job in convincing others that they would love it, too?" A little history can help answer this question.

    The PS2's "trifecta" formula to success involved (Early Release + Large Game Catalog + Affordability). PS3's release would almost indicate a shift in the demographic Sony was aiming for. (Late Release + Small Catalog + High Price). It's good to hear support on these sites for the wireless/motion utilization, blu-ray, etc. However, is this what the vast majority of owners with the immensely successful PS2 asked for?

    The numbers would say no. And Sony's lack of acknowledgement from the early get-go that business was "not all well" only served to worsen the matter. It's only recently that Sony has taken measures to help their baby along, but whether it proves enough to save the PS3 from immortality in the annals of gaming history as a less-wise decision is yet to be seen.

    Awesome that there's love for the exclusives, the free online, and Blu-Ray. Kudos to MSG4 and LittleBigPlanet. However, there's no denying Sony's shot themself in the foot and created a massive uphill battle in assuring these perks and games are more widely enjoyed.

    Sony needs to either slash the price $50 (at a minimum, $100 would be better), or include a game in the cheaper $400 version. I would've gotten the MGS bundle, had I actually been able to find it in stores around here. A little TOO limited there, Sony. Offer me a bundle with either MGS4, Uncharted, or Little Big Planet, and I'll definitely jump on it. But in the US, we get nothing, because it seems Sony's already resigned to taking the table scraps of the 360 & Wii over here.

    The problem is, i post so much that half the things I've said in the past are completely missed. I've praised the cell , numerous times for number crunching in server apps. But for a dell server, i'd still take a Xenon over a Cell anyday(mainly because its X86 and we arent running 3d rendering calculations or anything).



    If you want to assume I am a fan boy, knock yourself out. I keep an open mind and I know how a ton of things work, including 3D rendering, 3D programming, 2d programming, .net. C++, network infrastructure security and a very expanded knowledge of computer hardware, plus a myriad of other things. The cell, as a super computer, rocks the planet. The Cell in the PS3 was not a very intelligent idea. At least they stuck to the PPC architecture... The CELL is the number 1 reason why the PS3 is faulty as a game machine. Asking developers to relearn everything JUST fit into their console, isnt doing developers a favor, it's doing Sony a favor.



    Please note that I also stand up for my convicitions. If I dont believe a company is being morally correct to me or the general public, then I wont support them in any ways. I can praise them for things they have done right (Sony's HOME is an awesome idea) but they wont be getting a lick of $ from me and I'll inform people why they should think twice as well. (SONY IS SUPER SUPER SUPER DRM happy, aka they think they can tell you how/what to do with your product). I am the same for EA and they have yet to sick a single penny from me, despite being a fan of the SKATE series(which they did well).

    I still stand by that they should of dropped the price for the holidays, but it's good news they saw such an increase towards the end of it all. If VGChartz is to be used as a rough estimate (which is shouldn't), the difference between the two console's sales for the year is under a million units (10.3m and 11.2m units respectively). Honestly, I thought they'd beat out the 360 in Japan and Europe with close sales in the US, leading to a marginal worldwide victory, but slow hardware in Q4 (mostly due to the lack of a price drop) had them loosing in the US and Europe by larger margins and loosing overall this year.

    Both consoles have been keeping things close since late in '07, but we'll see what this year brings. Their game lineup is huge and their poised for a price drop. I have high expectations.

    Autolycus you are certainly acting like a fan boy tbh every post ive read all your doing is bashing a product which is a damn good product some people dont like some think its over priced same with all things the way i see it if you can afford it dont buy if you dont like it dont buy it. The PS3 is not far behind the 360 in graphics if its made for the PS3 EG exclusive they look pretty damn good but for me since i use blu rays as well it made it a pretty damn cheap option for me in some ways if i take it for a games console and a blu ray player its cheaper then a 360 that is purely a games console to me.

    sony is not great but they are not half as bad as you are making them out to be and to make your point of showing how bad sony is could you not fit that in 1 post instead of a dozen half of which are theoretical at best. any way you look at it the PS3 is a great all round modern system that has all its bases covered and a damn good reliability record.

    as for the cell processor that is a damn good processor if used in the right capacity. I dont think it was the best choice for a gaming system but in some situations its a great little chip for example in high end server racks that need that sort of streamlined processing that is specifically for the task at hand for gaming its not so great the quad cores in high end gaming rigs available today in gaming easily compete with a cell in gaming.

    I have a quad core factory clock is 2.9GHz overclocked to 3.5GHz per core i would say that for gaming it wipes the floor with the cell. but in high end data processing the cell is fantastic at number crunching. Since the PS3 arrive the cell processor has come along in leaps and bounds in server rigs, cell based PCI-E motherboards hell even a TV lol

    The majority of us aren't fighting over which console is better. Most of us are just trying to clear up misconceptions. If you think 360 is better than PS3, I'm fine with that. Just don't use false information to make that claim.

    Even better. If the lag has to do with bandwidth only (which it doesn't), shouldn't Microsoft, with their $50/yr online service, have 500-Player Deathmatches by now instead of 8? Hell, the PS3 will see M.A.G this year with 256-Player matches and DC Universe online with who knows how many people. Explain to me why you're paying $50/yr but have to rely soley on other people's internet connections, rather than have dedicated servers across the board.

    To your R2 AI point. There is nothing wrong with the R2 AI. If you played the first one you'd remember the Chimera CAN see heat signatures through walls, which is why you can hide in bushes and they can still see you (maybe this was why you didn't like the game).

    I post anti Sony, which makes me automatically pro 360 in everyone else mind. Plus, having a background in game programming, I know that it's the best sytsem to develop for. MS is a software company, they know what developers want. Give developers the right tools and you'll have a better library of software that is always true.



    Trust me I went through 3 RROD's, MS and quality certainly don't go hand in hand. But quality with a company so large is hard to really paraphrase. I may have misread your posts but from the experiences I've had playing the PS3, it's beyond overated and their free online, shows it's value in cost.

    I never paid to get my system repaired/replaced. not once and i had my console since the launch. And yes a crap ton of those nickle and dime things arent worth it. Especially after the NXE changed everything.

    I put my thoughts clearly and without any twists. You posted like you were paraphrasing me, but you weren't even close. I know I had a long post, but please read the entire thing.

    If you did read it all, you may misunderstand me. You have always posted pro-Xbox 360. That's fine, but your posts are jaded and unjustified. I gave my personal reasons for why I play the PS3 more. Does that mean it's a better system? No. It means it's the better system for me. If someone is living a similar lifestyle and has similar gaming habits, then my post might actually help them seriously think through their purchase decision. With that said, I still play my Xbox 360 on a weekly basis. I recently bought The Simpsons game and I am enjoying that. I also enjoy my backlog of games like Gears of War, BioShock and Condemned: Criminal Origins.

    Don't come at me with these elementary attacks and act like you are doing other people a favor by doing so.

    i think you're a little mistaken. sony doesn't suck peoples bank accounts dry... ms does that. sony offers free online. ms doesn't . sony offers free themes and wallpapers for your system... ms makes you pay for stuff that a 5 year old could slap together. and i know this for a fact cause i bought a theme of xbox live that was certainly NOT worth the asking price.

    i have all three next gen systems and, in my opinion, the ps3 is the better one. in a year and a half i went through 3 360's, but still have my first ps3. cost $700 when i got it, but it's proved, again and again, to be worth it. got a wii a few months ago and am actually enjoying that one too

    If Sony really wants to see some serious sales spike then they know what they must do as it is mainly what consumers are looking forward to. They need to bring a price cut to the ps3 that way more and more consumers won't mind purchasing the system. The thing is though, just as with many others, i believe that a price cut for the ps3 is near but Sony seems to be on hold, playing it's cards with a strategy (that be awaiting the release of some top titles for the system like Killzone 2 and God of War 3!!!)

    @calanorn MS isnt high and mighty, they released a game system that was less reliiable then PS2....I didnt even think that possible!



    The point of me posting isn't show how great MS is (cause they arent great) it's to show how ungreat Sony is. Especially in teh face the rabbid, mouth water Sony fanboys that will die for their precious leader (while their leader sucks their bank accounts dry).

    Killzone 2 is the most impressive looking console game every made, its like CGI. And why will it not live up to its hype everything I've seen has blown me away. I want it now can't wait.

    It's not LIKE cgi it WAS CGI. Got busted in 2005 for pre-rendered movie clip after they said it was real time. Then in 2006 they got busted again for touching it all up from the game play (using tricks and trades to make it look better then it was). in 2007 and 2008 there was a vast and noticeable difference in graphics compared to what they showed years ago. Don't get me wrong, KZ2 looks good, but it doesn't look as good as it was hyped to be.
