28 million Xbox 360s sold, 17 million on Xbox Live

Microsoft announces another sales milestone for cheapest current-generation console and its online service; XBLM revenue hits $1 billion.

Last October, Microsoft reported that its Xbox 360 console sold 2.2 million units during the July-September quarter, an increase of 20 percent. In November, NPD reported that the console sold more than 800,000 units, thanks in part to the hard-drive-less Arcade 360 becoming the cheapest console at $199.

Though it is still withholding December sales numbers--US figures from NPD are expected next Thursday--Microsoft revealed today its worldwide, life-to-date numbers for the 360. From the time it launched in November 2005 to December 31, 2008, the console has sold more than 28 million units internationally, which is 4 million more than the original Xbox did in its five-year life cycle.

As Microsoft pointed out repeatedly in its announcement, the 28 million figure puts the 360 ahead of the PlayStation 3, which the company estimates has sold 20 million units life-to-date. Microsoft did not provide a source for the 20 million figure, and it didn't mention that the PS3 launched a full year after the 360 in November 2006. That month also saw the launch of the Nintendo Wii, which overtook the 360 last year with nearly 35 million units sold as of the end of October--and sold more than 2 million units in November in the US.

One of the 360's most universally praised features is its Xbox Live service, which now boasts 17 million active members. Since the console's launch, those members have spent more than $1 billion on products on Xbox Live Marketplace, according to Microsoft. Spending on the service increased 84 percent in 2008, a trend that the company said accelerated after the New Xbox Experience dashboard reboot launched in November. From Christmas to New Year's Day, 1.5 million "concurrent members" logged on to XBL.

    im in suicidals boat. same story tho i am lucky to not have my ps3 die on me yet. mind you, it began gathering dust the day i finished mgs4. i only blew the dust off it after having a resurgent interest in wipeout HD (between solid bouts of xbox live play)

    im proud to have helped with the $1b milestone. yeah the ps3 that i own has big storage and the wii i own has a cool controller. but the 360 that i also own rules the roost. im proud to have spent over 20 lots of 800 points on new downloadable games. im proud to have given them my credit card no so they can deduct yearly sums for my outstanding live service. BRING IT ON i say and cant wait for 09. well done MS you may not have shipped as many consoles in this generation (compared to the wii) but you won everything else.

    Ok so maybe "more powerful" wasn't the right word. The PS3's media is a storage space juggernaut and therefore allows bigger and more elaborate games to be published on less discs. For example, Lost Odyssey for 360 probably could've been published on PS3 on one disc as opposed to four on the 360. It's no mystery that the PS3's Cell processor is more powerful than the 360's Power-PC based processor. Alot of complaints regarding the 360's "power" lies in the fact that it started off almost maxed out. Where I see PS3 games steadily looking and performing better and better with each passing year, I still see 360 games looking and performing about the same, some even worse than before (due to extreme compression issues, just look at The Last Remnant and you'll see what I'm talking about). So no, maybe the PS3 isn't leaps and bounds more powerful than the 360 but I see it as a system that'll be around for awhile and will still be a contender years down the road where the 360 will probably need a major overhaul in a few years or so.

    About the "red ring of death", I'm not gonna lie when I say that I've encountered it on a few occasions but none of them were fatal. I'll usually just reboot my system and then it'll work fine again. Why it does this I'll never know but I know that a few of those times it wasn't a full RROD more like 3/4ths. At times a single quadrant will remain blank while the others will be red. For the most part my 360 has worked just fine and I haven't experienced nearly as many problems as some others have claimed. That's surprizing considering that I use my 360 during nearly every waking hour (yes I have no life). My only guess regarding that is that maybe I got a newer gen 360 where they fixed most of the major problems that was causing those RRODs, who knows. My point is that I haven't really experienced any fatal problems with my 360.

    On a hardware standpoint, I think the PS3 is a work of art, all you fanboys out there can cry heretic if you choose but that is my opinion and I'm sticking to it. But the fact of the matter is that having awesome hardware doesn't mean squat if you don't have all the games that people want to play. Given (on the PS3) there's games like MGS4 (game of the year in many publications), Little Big Planet, and the Resistance series but those games alone aren't gonna keep the platform afloat. Nintendo faced the same dilemma with the N64 and their Gamecube and you see where that lead them. The 360, hands down, has more games and better games and that is what insures a successful system. At first I thought Nintendo was crazy by going solely after the family gamer but it paid off for them in the end. The 360 seems to be the system for the hardcore gamer whereas the PS3 seems to be geared more towards the media junkie since most people I know that have one just got it because they had to have all the systems and/or they needed the cheapest Blu-Ray player around.

    What I meant by richer is I meant that Sony has alot more outlets for revenue than MS does. Sure Sony's doing alot of restructing but I see them lasting regardless, a company that's been around for as long as they have and that has done as much as they have doesn't just go quietly into the night. Just because MS came out with a few Super-OS's (the verdict's still out on Vista), a few gaming consoles and a few other relatively small ventures doesn't make them invincible. They're just as vulnerable as Sony or anyone else struggling to make their way through the world's current state of economy.

    Contrary to what my fellow peers think, I still think that overall the PS3 is the more powerful and well-rounded system as a whole. I think it'll be around for alot longer than the 360 without becoming obsolete too quick. Whereas MS will probably have to scurry to conceive new hardware within the next couple of years (you know they already are), Sony could probably rest on the PS3 for a little while longer (that's not to say that they're not already working on a PS4 or equivalent thereof).

    Ofcourse if a company like Capcom wanted to get more money out of the software they would go the multiplatform route. Never the less a rep from Capcom promised it would remain only on Gamecube and if it did get ported it would be on another one of their hardwares (GBA) but that didn't happen Capcom broke their word and gave into Sony's userbase. It doesn't matter what you try to say to defend Capcom or Sony because alot of Nintendo fans were pissed off because they didn't have alot of great 3rd party exclusives to begin with. Yet here comes Sony adding this game making it multiplatform, a formerly promised Gamecube exclusive.

    I didn't forget about the Wii and PC, even though it wasn't supposed to go to PC either no one cared about PC except PC owners themselves which are in the minority. It's not even considered a gaming console. Even Sega, when they were a hardware maker ported games over to the PC (Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic CD). However if RE4 were to also go to Xbox then that would have also been a strike against Nintendo but it didn't. It just went to Sony's console (still not counting the PC). The Wii is another Nintendo system, ofcourse they would get it but it's too little too late. Was supposed to be the Gamecubes big game yet Sony stole a little bit of their thunder.

    That's why Microsoft and Nintendo would want to go after them according to the Gamestop employee. He made the prediction even before the 360 came out that Microsoft and Nintendo "ARE OUT TO GET SONY!" for what the PS2 did to their previous consoles. You have to remember these are companies who want their brand to be on top they do not think like you or me. All they want to do is get Sony out of there so they can obtain more ground. Just ask "Autolycus" in an earlier post he made a point that Microsoft and Nintendo often NEVER go after each other during press time. Although both do attack Sony, he posted a link in an interview one of the guys at Nintendo complimenting Halo. But when it comes to the PS3 anything that comes out of both companies mouths is negative. At first I didn't want to believe the Gamestop guy either however... when you look at what's current now. Install base or no the PS2 is fading it doesn't even get the mega hits anymore such as DMC4, VF5, GTA4, SC4, and Tekken 6. The PS3 is behind both 360 and Wii in hardware sales and 360 software sales are greater. Do you see what is happening? Everytime Sony tries to go for a number 1 they get slammed. If Nintendo and Microsoft DID plan on working together and we didn't know about it they sure are doing a successful job.

    Capcom could've wanted to make more money and one of the obvious ways to do that would've been to take Joe & RE4 to the PS2 which more people had than the Gamecube not to mention the fact you kind of forgot RE4 also wound up on the PC & Wii.

    And true while the PS2 maybe last gen it still has the highest sales (all time) of any console ever made to date.

    I will be buying yet another 360, because I no longer have one and I want one again. It's so worth it. The PS3 is a nice machine but has little entertainment value. The 360 has it all!

    I'd just like to say, I waited in line for 8 hours the day the 360 was released 3 years ago. I play at least 30hrs of games and watch at least 1 movie a week and I have yet to have any issues. I'm not saying MS did'nt have hardware issues. I just wanted everyone to know there are still original release 360's out there reliable as ever. As for my PS3, don't get me wrong, I love it but I am on my second one. The BluRay on my first stopped reading disks after only 6 months. This Just goes to show. Hardware is hardware. Sometimes you get a lemon, sometimes you don't. However... my Wii has been flawless from day one as well. Are there any lemon Wiis... =)

    Oh I understand. Everyone is going to have different numbers, and I'm sure there's someone out there that knows 10 people who have had zero problems. But I mean just based off us two alone, 30% of people you know have had problems, and 85% of people I know have had problems with the RRoD. That's insane! Like I said, I just felt particularly bad for my one friend with the launch system to be without a gaming console for weeks at a time while it was under warranty and then to have to buy a whole new console b/c it broke out of warranty. That's rough.

    Great console and great games. Great value for money especially considering i can buy 5 titles from a supermarket for £20. Although saying that my 2nd 360 just a month old got the rrod once but since then its worked fine.

    I agree Sony messed up as far as gaming is concerned. They arrogauntly beleived every PS2 owner would run out and get a PS3 (as proved by the selling them a brick comment), but that didint happen. They were also happy to forget the primary goal of a games console to push Blu-ray. They have lost ground in the console market but that compromise gained them the BR monopoly they were after. Sony have been trying to get a format monopoly for years, its just a shame they had to use their loyal playstation fanbase a pawns to acheive their aim.

    I'd even go so far as to say their gamble is paying off given the comparitively strong sales of the PS3. I just think their long term plan is flawed, as I cant see the PS3 competing with the next xbox console. Thats when i think the winners and loosers will finally be decided.

    Both systems have their good and bad points but the fact of the matter is that in this current generation battle, the 360 has a much higher ratio of "must have" games than the PS3. The Wii seems to be battling for a totally different fanbase so I usually don't even count them in the same battle that MS and Sony are waging against each other. I never owned an original Xbox and only owned a PS2 and Gamecube. I waited for a long time and after reviewing the PS3's rosters of games, it never improved to the point that the 360 is at now and it still remains that way to this day. MS did something right that Sony couldn't in this gen, Sony can't beat them all and although Sony does have more money than MS (remember that Sony has other divisions that bring revenue besides it's computer entertainment division), it still couldn't beat out MS's marketing genius, I give 'em props for that. That's the evil of the US marketing juggernaut, whether a system is genuinely better doesn't matter if they convince the gaming public otherwise. In summary, the PS3 is a much more powerful system than the 360 and I think Sony thought that was what all it was going to take to win this gen's console wars and unfortunately for them they were sorely mistaken. They couldn't have predicted the current economy crisis when first developing the PS3 (although price wasn't what helped me decide my choice with the 360) and that's just badluck on their part. It was a weird period for media when the next gen systems were announced. DVD's were starting to show their age and Blu-Ray (although impressive with its sheer storage size) was just ushered in way too quickly for the mainstream to accept. I still agree with MS's choice to stick with standard DVDs even if it is a strain to fit alot of these new gen games on them at times (especially Japanese RPGs). In the end, the fact of the matter is that MS made the right choice and Sony didn't this time out. I think even when MS comes out with a new system, as long as they price it right it will still be a contender when the PS3 is still around and suddenly becomes more mainstream as technology progresses and prices for Blu-Ray drives drop. Sony just has an uphill battle ahead of them but I don't see them giving up anytime soon, they've invested too much into their Playstation brand to just let it tank. Until then, I'm perfectly happy with my 360, it's millions of Live users to choose from when logging onto my online games, and it's much more expansive library of games. They're not all A+++ titles but at least we'll have variety. Sorry Sony, I'm just not rich enough to afford a PS3 with as little incentive as you're giving us, I find all the movies I wanna watch on standard DVD so far. The End.

    yeah dmish, we can all talk about who we know, so of all the 360 owners i know, the minority have had major problems, sure more than acceptable, something like 30% i reacon, but not 13/15 or 86% like you claim. so we just have to disagree on the numbers. but yeah, it sucks that some have had problems outside of the warranty, but thats the way it goes. i lost count of the number of electronic items ive had that died after the warranty was up, even by just a few days - grrrr.

    It is my opinion that Microsoft has the best system on the market regardless of the many hardware failures at launch. They gave us an extended 3 year warranty in case we had issues which is cool. Also, all of the games on 360 are incredible and Xbox Live is perfect. Way to go MS...even if it was a rocky road, you came out the winner in my mind.

    @Kyuubi_Vegetto: I beg to differ. Remember what happened with Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4? Yeah, that was Sony's doing. It gives people little incentive to buy a Gamecube when triple A titles like that end up on other platforms. There is a good enough reason for ya.

    Also PS2 is last-gen so I don't count that. I surmise it is the winner of the last console generation so it can remain in the past. All the games being released right now are niche games and imports. The system is on it's last legs, they don't even count it much in NPD sales anymore and on VGChartz it's not even on the main page. It is in a different class of consoles now with the Gamecube and Xbox. I don't count them either even though Madden came out for both a short while ago. Sorry but I'm leaving last-gen in the past. Current-gen is what's important to me though the PS2 will always be remembered. God of War 2 was their last real blockbuster, I thought it should have been on PS3...

    I agree with the definition of "units sold". I believe there was an article posted almost a year ago that said Microsoft defines units sold as units that shipped to retailers. So if Microsoft ships Best Buy 100 360's, it will record 100 units sold in their books, whether consumers purchase the units or not (not good or bad, as if the units don't sell, Best Buy obviously will not order more). Usually this is recorded this way so that, if needed, a company can artificially inflate "sales" right before the end of a quarter/year/announcement.

    I have zero info on how Sony or Nintendo define units sold though.

    I beg to differ. Almost everyone I know (i know you said everyone knows everyone who knows someone), but I'd say I know close to 15 people with 360's. All but 2, so approx. 13/15, have Red Ringed at least once (including the one I had). Two friends had launch systems. One of them Red Ringed twice under warranty, and Red Ringed end of November 2008, placing it out of warranty. He bought a new one. I had one until March of 2007, when I became so fed up with two issues: 1) The system Red Ringed 3 times (it came back to life each time fortunately 2) About 15 minutes into a movie the screen would freeze. It would then pixelate and zoom in and would keep zooming in and pixelating, locking up the 360, meaning I could not watch movies on it.

    To me, this is simply unacceptable. I commend MS on offering a 3-Year Warranty, but what about my friend who bought a launch system, investing in Microsoft from Day 1 whose warranty expired, yet his system failed again? He had to drop another wad of cash because of a known issue. I think this is nuts that he is written off, but i'm honestly more disappointed in my friend for shelling out for another 360 instead of taking a stand against shoddy workmanship. To each his own I suppose.

    also I don't see why Nintendo would have much reason to go after Sony for what happened last gen they weren't the ones who crippled the Gamecube Nintendo was.

    @frogiggy323: I'm not insinuating that although it would be messed up if that did happen it can't. Sony has deep pockets as far as I know their gaming devision isn't going any where any time soon. What I am implying is "what if" Sony cannot make it back to number 1? Us gamers will just have to get used to whatever place they maybe in and see other consoles shine.

    @splendormk7: Whatever you say. Still I wonder what happens if Sony doesn't take control. I don't know if I can get used to all this with the 360 being so popular and all. I may have to get used to the fact that Sony no longer dominates software (360) and hardware sales (Wii -> 360 -> PS3). Ah yes, a gaming world without the PS brand constantly thrown at me from now on this will be one of my favorite console generations because it's the most interesting. Not like last time when it was all PS2 and nothing else seemed to matter.

    I still have my old original Xbox, Gamrecube, and PS2, even though I adored my PS2 for the games I play on it I wish I could have seen those other 2 systems get some of the games the PS2 had so I can see a difference in graphic potential. But no, Sony wouldn't let it fly, now Microsoft has caught on to them and they got devs on their side finally. Still PS3 got their MGS game and no one can stop the Wii. All the while Microsoft is finally accepted as an important rival to Sony. Yep as I stated alot more interesting than the previous gen. Why is it most of the earlier posts I've seen Nintendo fanboys and MS fanboys seem to not go after each other? All the hate gets directed at Sony. I wonder about that, this maybe rumor or speculation but a random worker at Gamestop told me Microsoft and Nintendo would work together to crush Sony. O_o I wonder if there is any truth to that...he claimed both companies want revenge for what the PS2 did to the previous consoles. I thought it was a bit ridiculous at the time but still can't help but wonder about that looking at the situation that is now.

    first I want a defintion of "Units Sold". Sold to what? The warehouse? Or are we talking just pumped off the production line? (which would be off with the RROD issue). There is no definition of "sold". I believe for PS3, from what I remember, it was units coming off the production line, because they didnt want to give bad news to investors.

    microsoft tries everything to hurt Sony's heart. men released arcadepack and kept the price lower. it was a good idea i admit.meanwhile Sony seems doesn't care anything..soon sony may take the leading.. we never know what might happen. men are so silent.!! 360 goes really well for now..

    Funny thing about the wii is it has a really poor attach rate. Its like people buy the system but not games for it. All the good games seem to be first party (from Nintendo). Aren't the highest selling games for the Wii-Wii sport and Wii fit? Its cool that all of them are thriving. Happy to see the PS3 standing on its legs. Still not sold on it though.

    Well we know if most people cared about cheapness to such a large extent PSN would be killing Xbox Live in the online play category, along with third party titles selling better on than Wii than Xbox 360 or PS3.
