Kirby returns to Wii VC

As has become a Monday tradition, Nintendo and Microsoft announced their weekly downloadable releases today, headlined by a 16-bit outing for the former company's rotund mascot Kirby.

Originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1998, Kirby's Dream Land 3 took the original Game Boy series of platformers to home consoles. The game expands on the series' core mechanic of swallowing enemies to gain their powers, and it includes a second playable character, Gooey, as well as a cooperative multiplayer mode to match. Kirby's Dream Land 3 sells for 800 Wii points, or $8.

This week's WiiWare release is Konami's Sandy Beach, which lets players build--and of course defend--towering sand castles. One or two gamers place cannons strategically throughout their castle compounds to stave off encroaching crabs. In-between waves, players use a metal detector to comb the beach for booty and extra artillery. Sandy Beach sells for 500 Wii points ($5).

Finally, Microsoft announced its Xbox Live Arcade release of the week, Interpol: The Trail of Dr. Chaos (pictured). A seek-and-find puzzle game, Interpol has players canvassing the globe in search of a fugitive who shares his name with an obscure NES game from Pony Canyon. Developed by TikGames (creator of XBLA games such as Texas Hold 'Em and Domino Master), Interpol will launch on the service Wednesday with an 800 Microsoft point ($10) price tag.

    I feel kind of dissapointed. I'd rather expected a full Kirby videogame available offline when I read the title. Hope Nintendo doesn't stay with Kirby downloadable games, and that soon enough (maybe late 2009 or early 2010) there would be a complete Kirby videogame for the Wii.

    That's super and all, but I wish they'd do a new console game. Not that they'll see any reason to. They upload old IPs for the next 20 years at a fraction of actual development. I don't know how small a fraction the costs are to actual development, but these things are surely printing money.

    Or Kirby SuperStar =D"

    It's called Kirby Super Star Ultra, for the Nintendo DS. You'd better get that, because Nintendo isn't going to release the original on VC and lose sales of the DS version.

    It's good that Nintendo has been releasing decent games the last couple of weeks, but it's expected behavior. They only really put out one or two games a week, and at this rate we will probably never see a complete list of games for any of the consoles the Wii emulates. So...they should at least be good games they are putting out, like this.

    I think all of the pre-N64 Kirby games were the best. Sure, Nintendo had another small victory with Kirby's Canvas Curse on the DS, but I haven't really felt like a true Kirby game came out since the days of Super Star and Dream Land 3. I think Nintendo spent so much time working on the likes of Zelda & Mario, that Nintendo didn't really care how much work went into making a Kirby game, and so they just neglected the series once it became more difficult than making a 2D game.

    They have made some good Kirby games for DS. Hopefully they produce some good Wii titles as well.

    @tyzwain
    It's more of a downloadable content article rather than solely a Wii VC article. Gamespot does these every week.

    Anyways, Kirby's Dream Land 3 was probably my least favorite Kirby game, but I still may pick it up either way. You can never, ever get enough Kirby.

  • CamiKitten

    Kirby has always been a favorite in the Nintendo franchise, sadly enough not as popular as the ever present Mario and LoZ, but still existent non-the-less. With titles stretching back as far as our beloved NES I'm glad they're finally putting him out there for purchase on the Wii so that even kids will have a chance to explore the round pink goodness of Kirby that eats his enemies and wears there bloody scalps as hats lol. I'm waiting for when then make a good new console game for Kirby, and not that crap they made on the GC >_>;

    Hey wwonka666 are you just bashing the Wii because your all upset you brought a cheap oven that doesn't even work well instead of console? Anyway good week for announcements mainly just because a 'new' kirby games hitting VC but still. Edit* I originally said this aimed at viewtiful_jay as I thought he said what wwonka666 said but then realised viewtiful_jay was only quoting, so my bad.

    "Hey BLuFAlc0n have you even tried it yet? How do you know if you haven't tried it? I doubt you have because it isn't out yet if you had you wouldn't be blindly saying that Kirby is better. You probably don't have a real video game system, just the Wii so you tell yourself stuff like this to make yourself feel better about your trendy gimmicky favorite system of females, senior citizens and little kids all around the world."

    Wow, those are pretty harsh words coming from a dude with a Carebear as is avatar...

    I agree with Wiifan001, Kirby games are great on VC but most of all we need a Kirby Wii title. I would also like to see Kirby Tilt and Tumble on VC, I'm sure that would be fun with the motion controls.

    i believe ive played a demo of interpol from bigfishgames.com
    if its the same game then its quite good and i might just get it on xbla.
    although to be fair i believe that seek and find games that rely on cursor movement would be more at home with the wiimotes pointer control.

    I'm glad to see that N is seemingly adding more of their better "legacy" titles, even if at a slow rate. Since it could be slower. Although, I wish it were faster than what it is now. Ah well... I'll have to check this out.

    When Nintendo announced WarioLand Shakeit for Wii I thought a 2D game on a disk in this day and age why not. Then I thought why Wario it should have stared (Kirby) I hope to see more Kirby on the Wii and maybe a Kirby game exclusive to the Wii.

    I can't believe what I'm hearing in these responses... sre it's purely my opinion, but Kirby's Dreamland 3 was horrible!!! It wan't even fun to play! If you want a real Kirby game, try Kirby' Adventure for Nes. Nightmare in Dreamland for GBA was a better remake of the previous. Kirby 64 was pretty good too. Seriously though, do the research - most sites wil tell you how bad this game really is. Definitely the worst in the series in my opinion.

    Its good they are releasing more classics on the Virtual Console, although I have never really been a big fan of Kirby :p. I just wish they would continue and bring Earthbound to the VC! Americans like me have been waiting so long not only to play that game again, but for them to release the whole series over here! Come on Nintendo I know you want to!
