ESRB: Guitar Hero: Modern Hits rocking DS

Ratings board listing pegs platform for already trademarked title of new installment in Activision's money-minting franchise.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board appears to have given Guitar Hero fans a late Christmas present. Sticking to the ratings board's oft-repeated practice of revealing titles before they are officially announced, the US-based body has posted a listing for "Guitar Hero: Modern Hits".

The listing comes as no surprise, given that Activision filed an application to trademark the title "Guitar Hero: Modern Hits" in October. However, its platform--the DS--was a bit of shock, given widespread speculation that the game would be an era-specific title a la 2007's Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the '80s. However, the news further underlines Activision's success on Nintendo's portable, which received two Guitar Hero games just this year: June's On Tour and November's On Tour Decades.

Like previous DS Guitar Hero games, Guitar Hero: Modern Hits will be rated E10+ (for Everyone 10 and older) by the ESRB. What is unclear about the game is whether or not it, like the two On Tour games, will come with a fret-button peripheral that connects to the DS via the handheld's Game Boy Advance slot. That slot is absent in the DSi, the camera-enabled third model of Nintendo's portable, which is due out in the US in the latter half of 2009. Requests for clarification sent to Activision had not been answered as of press time.

    @shani_boy101 They don't want to make the DSi any heavier and bigger, than DS lite.

    I hated all the songs in the modern section in GH Decades. So I'll pass.I swear if they put Jonas Brothers in there or something, I'm going to hate Acitivsion. For once, I'd like to see some Zeppelin songs, and I never seen Rush ever since Activision took over.

    @narutofan

    I own a DS and I'm 29. I know lots of people who own it that are not kids. The DS has sold more units than both the PS3 and the Xbox360, so it must be owned by more than just kids.

    @Narutofan30

    I got the DSi, and I'm not a kid. It' not that crap, it's awesome.
    I'm not saying it's perfect, but the buttons really feels good, they're like triggers. Although the GBA Slot is removed, I got a feeling that theSD card Slot is made for playing GBA games straight from the SD Card, without the need of GBA game pak, oh and DSi supports SDHC Cards as well.

    @ Leunga
    You're right about the new systems are for stopping hackers. But you're wrong about that ALL Flash Cards doesn't work in DSi. There aer two existing flash cards that will work, check youtube.

    Looks like they wouldn't kill the DS Lite, and will carry on.
    Although the DSi just came out in Nov., it already sold more than 1million units, believe it or not. Only in Japan itself. The DSi will be huge, I own one and I can tell. I actually like the features in it.

    Guitar Hero will live onto the DS, and wouldn't stop even though there's a DSi out.

    Now all we need is better songs.

    Just like with the new psp3000. All this newer version of the same system is only a cover up to combat illegal gaming. The new DSi is not compartible with all the flash cards, just like the new psp which cannot be downgraded.

    DSi = FAILURE! The DS is mostly owned by Kids ranging from many diffrent ages, How do I Know? First Hand Experence. If the Take away the Slot and Do all this Fancey stuff with pictures and what not Older people will still not care but the older people who all ready care are using it for gaming so taking a away a Game Feature BAD IDEA!

    why do they have to get rid of the GBA port??? we don't really need the DSi to be paper thin you know, keep the dimensions plus the GBA port and ADD new features.

    I think everyone should be like weisguy119. because activision will constantly make guitar hero games. but we should all just buy what we want to buy instead of complaining on the internet about it.

    This might be the best Guitar Hero yet. I'm tired of listening to 70's and 80's has-been bands. The appeal of those groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones is actually mostly nostalgic I've noticed, with the exception of a few groups (for example, Guns N' Roses). Hopefully people stuck in the past will pick this up and realize just how excellent modern music has become.

    @Simulater Shock - Of course they have to release a new ds version every 3 months...they release a new one for the consoles about every other week, right? Or maybe it just feels like every other week. It's so much more fun to buy a whole new game instead of getting DLC! Who needs to handpick songs you want from the privacy of your own home when you can deal with some obnoxious and elitist employee at Gamestop ("I have a gamerscore of 40,000 so I don't have to take s**t from anyone!") and spend $60 on a game that's going to give you 4 or 5 songs that suck for every 1 that you actually enjoy?

    I couldn't care less about "modern hits". If they want to make another one that includes good music, I'll buy it - just as I have the other two. Activision could pump out one a day and I wouldn't give a rat's arse. I'd just buy the ones that interest me and ignore the rest. I'm really good at ignoring what doesn't interest me.

    Hurry, Activision! If you really try, you'll have just enough time to shove out a fourth edition before the DSi ruins your fun. Heck, just have all your other teams switch over to the DS and release a new GH every month while you can. C'mon, we all know you're thinking it.

  • sheepbeep

    Posted Jan 3, 2009 10:48 am PT

    It's become pretty obvious that the reason Activision is coming out with all these GH games is because if they don't, they think they will fall behind Rock Band. what they don't know is, with all these spin-offs coming out within MONTHS of each other, especially in this economy, fans just can't buy them all.

    @2bitsmokey Firstly expansions are good for buffing/changing useless or very underused units, both broodwars and frozen throne have a lot of these and both games could benefit from another expansion to make things better. Second things are never even close to perfect after in such a short amount of time and take many years to get balanced to a perfect level. My example of this would be in frozen throne a little while after release, it was discovered that the beastmaster was flat out overpowered with nightelf.

    In the end you can call it milking all you want but the community is gonna end up with a far better game once everything is said and done.

    the guitar hero ds stuff hurts me. but i only played spiderwebs and that blink-182 song in a store. i'd hate to try to play the "i don't wanna stop" solo with those tiny painful buttons. they need less space and flatter buttons really...

    Another one? Okay Activision, you'd done enough for the DS thus far; it's a novel idea and it works great in most respects but it's just something that I don't see lasting much longer.

    The game does keep the spirit of GH alive with the fret adapter and that's pretty much it; however the selection of songs and the limited gameplay due to restraint with the hardware, sound and graphics.
    Of course this will most likely be frowned upon because of my views, but again I reiterate that it is a nice little game, but I prefer the console versions a whole lot more.

    @Golbez_77 thats a load of bs. blizzard has always released a brilliantly flawed rts and then a year or so later perfected it with the expansion. thats all. starcraft was a great game but they didn't turn it into the esports titan it is until the expansion balanced it. same with warcraft 3. that game was actually terrible for competitive esports. the frozen throne on the other hand turned it into a brilliant esport. my point is. you have no clue what your talking about and I do. everyone had high hopes for starcraft 2 blowing up the esports community but after hearing they are already splitting the game up into 3 seperate games it holds up some red flags. for all the nubs that are only playing the game for single player, it doesnt really matter. they could split the game up into 20 games for all they care because that just means more content. for the hardcore competitive players, it means they aren't planning on perfecting it, just milking. and that my friend has activision's greedy paw prints.

  • N-One

    Posted Jan 1, 2009 9:36 pm PT

    Activision, GH is awesome & all, but chill. GH is overheating. Just make one DS game & one console game a year & we'll be happy (after ya'll finish GH: Metallica, that's gonna rock). If ya'll do that, you can work on things that need fixing or finding ways to do things (like upgrading the Music Studio to sound as close to a master track as possible, getting GH DS online & how to bring it to DSi, crank up the amount of DLC comming at us, fix up the band inteface to be easy to see & be unique, etc.).
