TNA braces for Impact 2

Midway confirms next installment in wrestling franchise set for release sometime next year.

Midway is suffering a bit of a beating lately, with controlling shareholder Sumner Redstone selling his majority stake in the company for a paltry $100,000, and the change of ownership giving the publisher's debtors a chance to call in their loans. But if the publisher can endure this smackdown, it may find a "hot tag" waiting for it on the other side.

A Midway representative confirmed for GameSpot today that the publisher's 2009 slate includes not only the Vin Diesel-starring Wheelman, but also the second installment of the TNA Impact franchise. He did not address platforms or features for the game.

The first Impact launched in September on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and PlayStation 2, receiving a positive critical reaction in the process. Originally announced for a 2007 release, Impact was developed by Midway's LA studio, which was folded into the publisher's San Diego operations towards the end of the development cycle.

to me the first tna game was a waste of money. after all the hype about it and the rumors hopefully they learned about there mistakes and note that I've never been disappointed with the wwe games

I thought the 1st game was good graphics wise but could be better and what dissaponted me was the short entrances same moveset 4 every wrestler no weapon selection no running up ramp and no secondary finishers

Sorry for the triple post, but I wanted to make mention of how the game was good and TNA is getting weak. Although with that said, even though I rolled my eyes when they said Suicide would appear on Impact, it's actually been quite enjoyable. Haha, loving the Suicide/Daniels storyline.... Guess Kaz is back.

And for all the AKI fans... You know I turned on my N64 the other day and played WWf No Mercy. I remember when it first came out.. It was the greatest wrestling game ever made. And yes it is fun to this day, but it is so dated. It looks so mechanical and fake.

Guys times have moved on. TNA Impact was a solid game. It just didn't have enough content to compete to the SDvR games which have nearly a decade of content.

TNA did a lot of things right and a few things wrong. IMO, all I could possible wish for is more of everything

The first impact game was great but they could have made it better by adding blood and a whole ton of moves and more weapon and more than 20 matches hopefull impact 2 will have a lot more of this stuff

I really, really REALLY hope that they completely improve well everything, the selling was beyond poor, the commentary wanted me to tear my own ears off, the CAW was poor and choice of matches and the career mode was poor.

If they improved all these completely then I would maybe, maybe consider renting this one out

Man I'd pay to play WCW/nWo Revenge again.

That is easily the best wrestling game I've ever played. Screw Here Comes The Pain.

SavoyPrime and others, I couldn't agree more! AKI pushed the N64 to its limits with their four wrestling games, and by the time No Mercy was released the options and replayability were staggering. They tuned the engine with each game, had perfectly balanced gameplay, a great reversal system, and an excellent spirit/momentum system. Don't even get me started on the CAW options.

Bottom line: I was practically drooling at the prospect of an AKI-developed wrestling game on the 'next gen' systems. Alas, we have been denied...

Hey Midway, how bout you guys hire AKI to make the game and it actually might be worth me purchasing. The AKI-developed wrestling games (WCW/NWO World Tour, WCW vs. NWO Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000, and WWF No Mercy) are still the best wrestling games ever.

They should release a wrestling game not a soap with dudes fighting. Those Nintendo 64 wrestling games were awesome, real wrestling not just graphics.

pyrobob: I wish that AKI/THQ would just make another wrestling game. WCW Vs. NWO Revenge for the N64 is still the best wrestling game there is that I have played. Smackdown vs. Raw is horrible.

Agreed. Those games (including WM 2000, No Mercy) were some of the best wrestling games ever. SvR isn't bad. Its just 'blah' and to arcadey for me

Now if they could pull off a tna vs. wwe... maybe it be worth buying.

My main concern was the lack of real wrestlers, and the placement of real wrestlers before random guys in the story. I don't care if there is one or two random guys, but the number the first game had was rather rediculous.

Hopefully they don't pull a WWE/THQ and only change one thing.

The first TNA game was great just the lack of features, repetitiveness, low replayability was what kept it from being a breakout game IMO

The first one had so much potential, and it was screwed up so badly. Fine-tune the grappling system a bit, smooth out the animations and throw in a ton (yes, a ton) more moves and customization options for the CAW and you end up with a game that can give Smackdown a run for its money.

  • ItsEvolution

    Posted Dec 5, 2008 3:30 pm GMT

I agree with improving the grappling system. Having to hold multiple buttons is not intuitive. Also, each wrestler needs their own unique moves. If they can make Impact 2 the game that the first one should have been, I'll be happy.

GameSpot gave it a decent review, yes, but other game sites and fanbase literally thrashed the crap out of it.

I may want it. Yes, I like my wrestling games. But they REALLY need to Man-Up and bring something to the table that can make them stand out more than the SmackDown series.

AND it doesn't help when Midway is in the doghouse as it already is.

that's good to hear as long as it can give us what they already have as well as alot more features, modes, content etc. they will be able to dethrone Smackdown vs Raw but we'll just have to wait and see

I might actually pick up a copy of this game, not cause I think it is a good game or I actually like the subject matter. No, its cause this might be one of the last games Midway releases. I am just a sucker for bad games, thats why I got a copy of E.T. and Limbo of the Lost.
