Report: Modern Warfare 2, board-based Tony Hawk confirmed

Newsweek correspondent claims host of new games revealed at Activision event, including Bizarre Creations' "Mario Kart meets Forza" racer and a James Bond driving game.

For a site that doesn't allow messages of more than 140 characters, Twitter has been the source of much gaming news of late. Two weeks after GameSpot UK correspondent Guy Cocker used it to reveal that Eidos' PR agency was trying to delay negative Tomb Raider reviews, Newsweek games reporter N'Gai Croal has employed it to apparently bust open Activision's entire 2009 lineup.

Modern Warfare will return.

In a series of "tweets" sent this afternoon, Croal recounted events from a presentation in New York announcing Activision's new deal with in-game ad firm Massive Inc. First and foremost is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will arrive in fall 2009. Although big, the news isn't particularly surprising, given the schedule that has Infinity Ward and Treyarch alternating development duties to ensure a new game each year. Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War was released to strong reviews last month.

Also not totally unexpected was apparent confirmation that the next Tony Hawk game will feature a skateboard-controlling peripheral. Croal quotes an executive as saying, "You're not going to be playing Tony Hawk with a controller in your hands." This would seem to confirm a June market-research firm leak that teased a game called Tony Hawk's Adrenaline. The PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 game would have players "put down the controller, step on the board, and feel the sensation of going big... Shift your weight to turn and balance grinds, kick back on the tail of the board to ollie, and lean into airs to pull off huge spins."

More intriguing is Croal's mention of not one, but two driving games from Project Gotham Racing developer Bizarre Creations, which Activision bought last year. The first was described as "Mario Kart meets Forza" by an Activision executive. The second will be a James Bond-themed driving game unassociated with any particular film, much like 2004's James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing. The multiplatform hit, which featured many vehicular sequences, was considered the best Bond game released while Electronic Arts held the film license. EA gave up the 007 IP in spring 2006, and Activision snapped it up just weeks later.

Unfortunately, though the executive at the presentation was apparently quite chatty, Activision as a corporation appears to have clammed up. As of press time, reps for the company had not responded to requests for comment.

    OMG its modern warfare again! HURRAY! I HATED the fact that it went back to this WWII junk. Modern Warfare was the absolute best.

    The reason CoD didn't get a cover system is because IW doesn't want to take the player out of the immersion of 1st person, and thats also why they haven't implemented vehicles (yet) because its harder to make good controls for 1st person driving. Killzone 2 seems to be making a good job at cover systems in 1st person though.

    I personally don't think COD should get a cover system. I actually prefer games without cover systems. Character cusomization would be pretty cool though.

    dude CoDMW needs a cover system. every other game has it, ever since the first game i remember seeing all my team mates and the germans taking cover behind fences, on walls, even blindfiring. MW is probably going to adopt a cover system after Killzones 2 FPS coversystem...well hopefully anyways. i think a cover system would be better than that corner shot thing(same one from Wanted, right?) the twisty-corner shot thing would be to easy. character customization, like R6Vegas2 would be cool. specially on a good lookin CoDMW game. hopefully MW2 gets more than just a new coat of paint. sumtimes its hard for them to make a better game then the first one, cuz the first one was so good. but i believe in them haha!, sorry for the long azz post

    i'm tired of stepping around the big boxes with peripherals like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and now a freaking skateboard. the more space these things take up, the less space other games have to share. but i can't wait to hear about people ending up hurting themselves on the skateboard. you know it's going to happen.

    Shmoe82, I agree with u 100% on that. I would really love to see that in the next COD:MW. However, a James Bond racing game? I'm not so sure about that, but let's not be quick to judge just yet.

    god im so sick of mario, nintendo is using that guy for everything now, its corny as heck

    come on nintendo lets get creative and make sum new characthers, or give us more metriod based material, like a remake to the return of samus, or my personal fav. super metroid i'd love to go against motherbrain again that was stronger and harder, or a part 5 or sumthing

    my 2 cents to mario....

    @ Shmoe: I'd like to see bullpups, like the L85, Tavor, or QZ-95. The last game was sorely lacking bullpups. I think it'd be awesome for it to be Israel vs China, though that's very unlikely. The kitty cornershot would be a) cheap (in something like hardcore, they cant shoot you but you can shoot them? Also, would require a cover mechanic, unless lean popped it out) or b) ineffective, because you can only have a 9mm pistol, and we know how good the M9 was in the last game.

    Anyway, it's made by IW, so it's already a must-buy for me.

    I hope that the new COD:MW uses some of the new guns that have been in developement for a while or are used that were not in the first game like the MP7, or the kitty cornershot.

    There were also just alot of them that didn't know what was really going on (like in codename panzers), they were just told basically what Bush told us in 2001 (seriously, you can compare lines from speeches).

    Seems like it could work in a BF Bad Company kinda way (without all the humor).

    I'm tired of Nintendo pawning off high power brand names like Mario for crap games in hopes of sales. In the past the occasional sports game we could stand. But Mario and Sonic at the Olympics? Seriously that's the kinda crap people should be fired for even pitching the idea forth.

    Well not allowed by law doesnt mean they dont. You cant tell me that it is only those of the Afrika Korps that meet up, im sure those that served elsewhere in the german "services" also meet up and remember the good old days, not all but some. Lets not get carried away with defending the german people, they let it happen and were happy to fight until the end. Again not all, but a damn large proportion did. I wouldnt call castro a dictator, sure hes a communist and not everyone likes that, and someone that lives a capitalist life like all those on gamespot are unlikely to give a fair case for castro. Im not saying I know what it is like to live in cuba under castro but I am pro communist, to an extent. And I would sooner live in cuba than most other Latin American countries.

    Actually, most German WWII vets are not actually allowed by law to meet up. The Afrika Korps is the only German WWII group who are actually allowed to formally meet, probably because of the absense of war crimes within the Afrika Korps.

    What would be really interesting is a game that mixed action of the soviet campaign in Afghanistan with the Nato and USA campaign. That would be great as it could be filled with all sorts all sorts of ironys, such as the weapons of the Taliban all being supplied by the CIA and could show parralels between how the Soviet soldiers felt about the conflict aswell as the US and Nato soldiers. But mw1 had a fictitious version of Afghanisan so this seems unlikely.

    Yeah Mr_Manikin52 how about Awful Warfare:Bay of Pigs. Cuba is more free then it could ever be under American rule. Northern Ireland would be a good setting, but to many people support the IRA and think the British were Nazis! As for playing as the Nazis, that isnt likely to happen anytime soon is it? Im sure there were Germans that didnt support Hitler especially when they realised they were loosing, but the majority did support him and the old German vets still meet up every year at get togethers for the SS or the Afrika Korps or the Luftwaffe etc.

    I hope Infinity Ward will push the boundaries of FPSs. I fell that they will make the next game set in Latin America. Modern Warfare 2: Operation Cuban Freedom.

    Where will they get Spanish Civil War (Pre-WWII Era), Korea (Post-WWII), Vietnam and the Arab-Israeli Wars?

    iv allwaysed wondered if there were any double agents in the german army maybe the should have a game with more a story line in a ww2 game somthing more than just killing the enemy maybe like a personal vedetta or summin

    Zeniftan, i completely agree with you. The phrase 'Nazi' seems to be commonly used to describe members of the German army. The german army swore an oath of loyalty to the 'Fuhrer' Hitler and therefore were required to fight against the allies, they were not all nazis, the nazis were a political party and they had their agents in the SS (Or secret police) I would like to see a german war game, but a story focussed one, not just any old war game where you happen to be german (something like brothers in arms)

    (Before you read this please keep in mind that I hate all racist's.)

    I've noticed something about all WW2 games.
    They're all from the allied perspective's.
    Maybe they could look into a fresh and strangely interesting perspective. Maybe they could look into the perspectives of some of the german's who fought the allies, BUT, only becuase if they didn't then their commanding officer's would have killed them instantly from point blank range if they mutineed and then ordered that there families be murdered aswell. (These people believed and knew that massacreing the jewish in the millions was SEVERELY wrong, some of them even had the morals to start a few small rebellions, knowing full well that even though they would be killed by german forces, they'd of succeeded in helping Allies win a few major victories.)
    I think there is still sometimes a stigma of association when it comes to the rest of the world looking in at Germany, and even though that war contained in it many atrocities, some German people did fight for the allies whether the allies knew about them or not. They fought and died for these reasons, that is worth being told in a game by anyones standards.
    I'd like to see this been shown to the world.

    Just my 2 cent's though.

    (BTW: i'm part scottish, part italian and mostly english. So if anyone thinks that I'm probably only writing this because I'm probably german. then think again.
    I just wanted people to consider the small group of germans that were of allied ilk.)

    Im pretty sure waw was the final bow of the ww2 genre in the cod games, dont get me wrong, it is tired. But there could be more life given to it yet if it featured perhaps action that isnt widely documented such as the chinese campaign or the role of the Indians etc. COD is a series that prior to mw prided itself on historical accuracy, and then mw came along and made up a ridiculous (albeit cool) hollywood fantasy about bad Ruskis and an Iraqi. like i said Vietnam has huge potential, that era has so much culture to it (the music, the heroin, the unpopularity of the war, the moral issues, the cold war era, the issues in America at that time) the possibilites are great. Just imagine an Apocalypse Now Game. Perhaps infinity ward were giving us a hint when they titled a mission in mw "charlie dont surf". Damn napalm would look good in HD. I admit it is a sensitve area for a game, both in that it was a tragedy for America but also it would be pretty hard to create the same "good guys" feeling present in all FPS. But perhaps Games are beyond that, and I just know that Infinity Ward could pull it off.

    A good story, is a good story regardless if it is fictional or not. codwaw just seemed to be another World War 2 shooter. Least setting it in a modern era allows for some creative licence. If a new publisher announced another world war 2 shooter without a franchise to back it would you really get that excited?

    cube-gage: Having a fictional storyline is (some think) better than replaying wars that have already happened because you don't know how they will turn out. Half the problem with codWAW is that you know EXACTLY what happens next, especially if you've played the other cods.

    Im of people talking about modern warfare. The game was great, but was completely fictional (this made no sense!) and im sick of all the casual gamers that talk about cod4 when they had never even played the other cod's. they are all like "oh waw is back to ww2, it sucks, im not buying it blah blah". Cod2 was my favourite cod, and no not the stupid big red one console game. Vietnam would be great if they had the balls to tell it how it was, Soviets in afghanistan would be awesome but I very much doubt they would have the balls to make that as the Russians have to be bad guys after ww2. the falklands war would be REALLY cool, but to many dumb kids would be like "what friggin war was this?". Modern warfare 2 will kinda suck unless they have the balls to feature a true story in real locations, Iraq and Afhghanistan, or Israel etc. grow a pair infinity ward

    Tony Who? Man, this new gimmick is gonna BACKFIRE BIG TIME. skate. or DIE!!!

    So how much you wanna bet they're gonna rehash the story from THUG1 AGAIN? I mean, THAW, THP8, and THPG all had the same story, the same gameplay, and the same empty promises of being "new". THUG1 was the peak of the series, and it all went downhill from there. Remember when they said "THP8 is the most realistic skateboarding game EVAR!!!111" and then Skate came out, and blew it away? Tony Hawk is gonna end up in the Skate series one day I bet, once Activision stop sending him checks.

    Either that, or they could make "Tony Hawk's Unemployment Line"!!!

    Call of Duty 6 is good news, Modern Warfare kicks ass unlike some other unmentionable games(*cough WaW*). I dearly hope they don't go for the "future warfare" cliche, those games are almost as bad as WW2 games. I want more early 21st century (i.e. current technology) based combat!
