Uncharted 2 unveiled

[UPDATE] Sequel to Naughty Dog's archeological action hit will apparently bring new arctic locale to the PS3; full reveal at SpikeTV VGAs.

Though third-party console exclusives are an endangered species, first-party games remain in fairly abundant supply. One of the best-regarded PlayStation 3-only games is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, developed by Crash Bandicoot studio Naughty Dog. After receiving solid reviews in 2007, the game sold 507,000-plus copies on Sony's console in the US, according to the NPD Group--an impressive feat, given that publishers tout multiplatform titles which sell 1 million units worldwide as smash hits.

Indeed, Uncharted's sales came in spite of the third-place installed base of the PS3, which took the bronze again in October US sales, according to the NPD Group. The game is also included in the recently launched 160GB PS3 bundle.

Drake better pack some winter clothing....

[UPDATE] Internationally, Uncharted sold 2 million units, according to figures supplied by Sony. No surprise, then, that it is getting the sequel treatment. Today, two sources revealed new details about the Tomb Raider-esque archeological action adventure's follow-up, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Game Informer teased its January edition, which will feature the game as its cover story. According to the Minnesota-based magazine, which is owned and published by retailer GameStop, the sequel will be an all-new adventure focused on 13th-century Venetian explorer Marco Polo.

Polo became famous for his books recounting his travels across central Asia and his time in the Beijing court of Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. The explorer's route might explain the snowy setting for Uncharted 2, a teaser trailer for which has appeared on GameTrailers. The 30-second cinematic shows now-series-hero Nathan Drake, bloodied and exhausted, wading through snow on a mountainside to recover a mysterious dagger. The original Uncharted featured a tropical locale.

According to the teaser, a "world premiere" for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be staged during the 2008 SpikeTV Video Game Awards. The awards will be broadcast on Sunday, December 14, at 9 p.m. EST/PST. The ceremony will also sport the first footage from Fight Night Round 4 from Electronic Arts.

    Uncharted was the first video game I played on the first and only game console I've ever owned, the PS3 160GB. Wow, I was amazed by the graphics and action, a great deal of fun for a 60 year old kid at heart like me. I got through the game finally and now playing through it again. Looking forward to the sequel.

    Just bought it. Love it! It is a very original game! Haven't even beaten it yet and already looking forward to the sequel!

    The first one was an amazing and original game that gamers and the industry has been lacking in a long time. It had great graphics, story line, character and action! The sequel will be a defenite essential - can't wait!

    The only complaint i had about the original is I wish it was longer. This is the best action-adventure game since the Jak and Dater series (which I'm also waiting for a sequel to) Uncharted 2 and Beyond Good and Evil 2, definite sequels to watch for.

    can't wait for this one, the first one I loved. Drake's definitely one of the best characters to come out in a while. they should try making an Uncharted movie.

    I admit, I never played the first one, though I did want to(It literally looked amazing and I was waiting desperetly for it). The only reason that stopped me was that people said it was too short. I hope this one is longer and has an open world really. Plus the stealth unless ND are sure, I haope not to see many.Infamous, R&C and Killzone 2 are the other games I can't wait for in 2009(As well as resistance retribution).

    The only good game on the PS3 has been Uncharted! Finally, a sequel! The PS3 will get its second good game! Hopefully the console isn't discontinued before they can release it though.

    It was actually a tv ad for the first one that convinced me buy my PS3. Incidentally I'm not exactly proud of that. Anyway I have never regretted that decision. I'll be keeping close tabs on this game. Wonder if we'll get any more back story to drake, ie: his possibility that he's ralted to to sir francis drake.

    This is amazing I loved the 1st game everything about it. It deserves a sequal this was one of the best experiences I have had on my PS3.

    Nice, damage control huh gamespot???, I remember this story saying that the game sold only 570000 on Sony's console (implying worldwide sales of less than 600 thousand copies)

    I loved the first Uncharted and still do. It was the kind of game the PS3 needed. Now with the second one announced for creation, and that damned teaser bringing up a whole load of questions, I really can't wait for this to come out. Hopefully Uncharted will only remain to get better.

    The first game was awesome, I loved the story! The only problem with the original was I just couldn't justify buying it. Not a whole lot of re-playability.

    If there's one thing I hate it's people comparing Uncharted to Gears of War simply because of the cover mechanic.... The two have nothing alike!

    Uncharted is one of the few exclusive games for the PS3 that I liked. I can't wait for this game to come out so I can use my PS3 for game and not a blu-ray player.

    Seriously, this game looks cool. It reminds me of tomb raider with more action and better graphics, which is ok by me

    If anyone has not seen the Uncharted / Massive Attack trailer, they should YouTube or Google it right away. Even if you've played the game before, it just makes it that more amazing, and makes you want to play it again and again.


    PS. WTF with GS taking this off of the PS3 front page after like, 10 hours? First the fudge the sales numbers, and now this? Gamespot is totally not favoring 360 exclusives over PS3 ones or anything, cough-Halo Wars all over the f'n place-cough.

    @Supericano2 - Probebly not going to be based one a real event in Marco Polos life but a made up secret adventure he had that he didnt wright about. So educational is thrown out of the window. Dont really think that Francis Drake has a dude related to him whos name is Nathan Drake and is a Indiana Jones type archeologist.

    That said. Uncharted is the next best thing on the PS3 so this is going to be awesome... hopefully

    Well, in the current generation, studios, as first party developers of SCE have make several original great titles like Uncharted, LBP, Resistance and so on.And where is MS's own original titles?GOW? No, Epic games is not an estate of M$.

    while i did love the first, it was a bit short/easy.
    i now i can play it on hard, but i hope for the 2nd, they make normal difficulty a bit more difficult.

    Drake's Fortune is one of my favorite games of all time; I've probably played through it a dozen times and it never gets old. I may rupture something trying to wait for Among Thieves to come out. Can. Not. Wait.
