Wii hits 7 million in Japan

Famitsu reports Nintendo's console has outsold the PS3 by nearly three times in its home country.

In its latest financial report, Nintendo reported it had sold just under 35 million Wiis since the console's late-2006 launch. That figure was for combined international sales in all territories including North America, Europe, and Asia--through September 30, 2008. The milestone came several months after the Wii overtook the Xbox 360 in lifetime-to-date sales in the US, according to industry-research firm the NPD Group.

Now Nintendo's plucky platform has hit a new sales milestone across the Pacific Ocean. Via its Famitsu magazine, Japanese industry-research firm Enterbrain is reporting that Wii sales have exceeded 7 million units in the island nation as of last week. The console's sales were boosted past this latest barrier by the launch of Animal Crossing: City Folk, which sold over 303,000 units during the week of November 17-23, according to Enterbrain's estimates.

The Wii's 7 million sales put it far ahead of its foes in the ongoing console conflict in Japan. According to Enterbrain figures quoted by GameDaily, Japanese sales of the PlayStation 3 numbered just 2.37 million units as of September 30, when the Wii had sold around 6.83 million units in the territory. Sony estimates the PS3 sold nearly 17 million units worldwide by the same date.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, the Xbox 360 continues to struggle in Japan despite massive marketing efforts. Enterbrain's estimate had less than 750,000 units of the console being sold in territory since its 2005 launch. Worldwide to date, the console has sold over 25 million units, more than the original Xbox.

    Fair enough Micro$pot. It seems you have succeeded in embarrassing the PS3 once again.

    It's not surprising that the Wii is outselling the PS3 badly. When they first launched, the Wii was $180 (Japan doesn't get Wii Sports bundled) while the PS3 was $600. Having a console worth 3 times more would lead to a terrible start.

    Now for the games. Japan does not care for hi-def gaming, so that is another blow for Sony and it nemesis, Microsoft. Since it's much easier to produce games for Wii or port games from last-gen, the Wii ends up with a more diverse line-up of games compared to the PS3. Surprisingly, the Wii has more 3rd party support in Japan than anywhere else in the World giving the consumers a reason to buy one. BUT.. there is one problem. The Japanese are used to the shovelware Nintendo releases that not even their best titles sell well (Mario Galaxy is still struggling to reach 1 million). Now everyone knows the reason why the Wii/PS3 gap is so wide. Things seem to changing though. Japanese people are only buying one these days for the release of Monster Hunter tri with nothing else to look forward to.

    If Xbox 360 managed to outsell the Wii once in its home country last year, it's possible that the Wii will be seeing some heated competition starting this month. Can the Wii stand strong with Star Ocean 4 (360) and Yakuza 3 (PS3) on the way?

    Okay, I hate to be mean, but seriously... what is you people's problem? There are 3 next-gen consoles on the market. Each console has some exclusives. You're not going to buy a single machine to play EVERY game out there. It just won't happen. That is the flipside to the expansion of the gaming market. You won't get Fallout or Gears or MGS... but you won't get ALL those games on any other single system either.

    If you don't like the games on the Wii, THEN DON'T @$^&ING BUY IT. It's not rocket science, but by the way some people talk, it sure sounds like it is.

    I own a Wii, it's not a next-gen console.. but it appeals to a more general gaming crowd.. Just looking at my wii game collection.. it's all Nintendo own IP games.. You buy nintendo to play nintendo games.. lol.. Everything 3rd party seem to be junk... beside for a few like No-more heroes & RE4.

    Hardcore gamer like us will think it fail because, it doesn't have games like fallout 3, Gears, MGS4 and so on.. But in truth it doesn't need this to survive.. This system could run on Wii sports, mario party & Wii fit type games forever.. Yes and this is what my GF, your mom & grandparents wants..

    Please don't hate on the Wii, it has not brought gaming to new heights, but brought gaming to a wider audiences.

    1. I live in the US so sales in Japan don't really interest me. 2. Good sales don't make it a good system. Most of the games that are released on the Wii are so shallow, hit the bargain bins by me in a matter of weeks, and (among my group of gaming friends) are forgotten about right after they're released. I wouldn't be surprised if the supposed millions of people who bought this system barely use it. And I concur with TheBrainSquid in that the next gen systems that Sony and MS release had better not have motion controls or some wonky crap like that. I don't go to the PS3 or 360 for titles like that, and if they go that route I may stop playing console games altogether.

    While I'm here, there's something else I'd like to get out that I don't think many have caught onto yet. About this "Nintendo Seal of Quality" hoopla that some like to talk about, it almost sounds like the Wii is the only system on the planet that has seen its share of bad games. Are you kidding me? The NES, SNES, N64, and GameCube all had moments where poor games would come out in droves (especially that first one). Nintendo didn't change the name of the seal to compromise quality of the games released. Seriously, if that's the best anyone can come up with as to why the Wii is seeing a number of mediocre games of late, I think it's time to go back to the drawing board.

    I don't think anybody around here wants to accuse the Wii of being the only system having bad games...I think what our fellow gamer MooncalfReviews is trying to say here is the amount of quality games for the hardcore/casual gamers alike have been far greater on other Nintendo platforms. The big N has been known for being able to satisfy just about everybody starting from the NES all the way up to the DS.

    But now with the Wii instead of pushing out the cool games like they were doing back in the N64/GB days. They are only using games that sell a great deal due to the casual market thusly causing them to decline from encouraging publishers to push the 3rd party gaming and the Wii's hardware to the next level. I can see where he's coming from after all there is nothing wrong with demanding more out of your product. As a consumer, you want to have the best product. At the very least get the best possible performance out of your wares and the Wii has not given it to us like the 360/PS3 has.

    Example: why should Nintendo fans be denied Fallout 3 or RE5?! The Wii is in the next-gen market isn't it? So why is it missing the important games? RE is supposed to be Nintendo's strong suit. This is Microsoft's first RE game but can Nintendo have it? Nope. Instead of wanting things to be multiplatform why not invest in some high calibur exclusives? It maybe a risk but Nintendo should go for it so they can have original content exclusively to themselves and not have to share it with the PS2 or Xbox 360. Sure some people don't care about exclusives but ALOT of people still do. It's the defining factor for buying a system.

    I would have liked to have bought games like the Metal Slug Collection, Samurai Showdown Anthology, Mega Man 9, or Geometry Wars, for the Wii. But then I realized I can already get those games on the systems that I own. Then there is the quality of their 1st party games. It's still there but I think it has lost some of it's thunder. I enjoyed Mario 64/Sunshine way more than playing Galaxy (makes me feel dizzy everytime I play it over my friends house), the Zelda 64 games I thought were better than Twilight Princess (the wolf thing turned me off, sorry), Mario Kart didn't do it for me either. Once I played it on the DS and the Gamecube I can honestly say that the new Wii installment is at best sub-par. Now for SSBB fighting games are a big deal for me so I tend to look passed the roster and concentrate on gameplay. To me there wasn't anything particularly unique added. It was more of the same from Melee if not more broken. Don't get me wrong because I RESPECT Smash Brothers as a series and by no means am I saying it's a bad game. I just didn't like it more than the first two installments.

    In anycase I think I speak for many experienced gamers when I say I don't want the Nintendo Wii to become the 1st party machine again like the Gamecube was. Not to say that was necessarily a bad thing, it's just gotten tiresome. The Wii as does the Gamecube base alot of it's library off of 1st parties since alot of system selling games got snatched up by Sony. Viewtiful Joe/RE4 anyone? Everything else has gone multi-plat. 1st parties were well and good then but another generation of having only them to me is just un-acceptable. I respect that everyone has their specific reasons for buying the Wii. Be it family, 1st party, nunchaku, Brawl, VC, or what have you and I commend them for sticking by their reasons. I just wish the Wii based it's strength on a stronger line-up like it's other game systems had. Pokémon, Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Zelda, Kart, isn't enough for alot of traditional gamers especially considering the N64/Gamecube tiers rival them and they're past last-gen. I prefer the Wii gains more success from other IP's, new games, or multiplaform titles. Why is it the PS3 had to have Bioshock? Sony took care of their fans because there was a high demand for the game to be on PS3. Why can't "Wii" have it? A system leading 1st while Sony is in 3rd. Don't tell me it's do to the cell because 360 handled it perfectly, sure they'd have to nerf the Wii version but whatever it takes! And what about GTA4, Mortal Kombat Vs. DC, VF5, Half-Life, Assassin's Creed, or Street Fighter? If I was a Wii owner I would beg for these games and why shouldn't I? It should be your right as a Wii owner to atleast desire these games.

    SNES was a beast it got all of the sweet games and as much as I hate to admit it (Sega fan here) it was ahead in hardware sales of the Genesis. But you know what? Even though the Wii's hardware success is un-rivaled. What next-gen game system has the the most software sales right now? 360 that's the one. The Xbox'es successor, this is a system who many considered the shooter/racer machine Japan hated. But for all it's criticisms it did not stop it from having a larger install base in the last-gen than the Gamecube. Not only that MS has successfully established themselves in the console gaming industry (at a cost though, it cost them 5.5 billion dollars but the 360 is taking care of it.) It's only gotten stronger now that you look at it, it has become more diverse in the games it carries. How is it that the 360 has more JRPG's than the Wii. That one baffles me. 360 also has the most next-gen online subscribers because of it's imerssive online user-interface. Don't count Sony out either they've won the format wars and they have been able to yank a mess of top selling 3rd party titles away from MS like Lost Planet and Bioshock. Not to mention the PS2 was king in the last-gen. As a Nintendo fan I want the Wii to get the best originals out of their line-up yet they have not done that yet. Instead they base the Wii's greatness off of other platform games and former N64/Gamecube titles. I say cut the crap already and give us your all Nintendo. Show us that SNES fire like we know you have. I surmise that, in the long run, this exactly is what those disappointed Wii owners were expecting out of their Wii console. They should not be at fault for that. After all isn't it okay for the gamers of past time to want the casual gamers favorite gaming system to be even better? There is always room for improvement.

    Another day, another news article regarding the Wii's success, another massive outbreak of gamers, fanboys, hardcore/casual gamer stereotypes, etc. to make more out of this than necessary. It never gets old or boring, really. I'm not here to hate on anyone or say that the feelings you may have are right or wrong. It is what it is, and I doubt I can change it in anyway. What I will say is that a little over two years ago, a lot of people were calling for Nintendo's proverbial head as far as its standing in the console race goes. Not even the most optimistic of fans envisioned that in a relatively short period of time, the Wii would not only be holding its own, but crushing the competition. If Nintendo has done nothing else, it has proven that it still has the tricks up those sleeves to keep things exciting around here. In an age where there is rarely anything that feels truly fresh, that's a definite plus in my book.

    What seems to be popular around here is people posting the fact that they've bought the Wii and now they're either very pleased with it or very disappointed and think that they should have more. If you ask me, that's really more about the choices each and every consumer has the right to make more than anything else. At this present time, not a single Wii owner, old, new, and even those that may no longer have the system, can deny the fact that it was a decision they made. I'm sure Nintendo didn't force anyone to buy the system, and unless I was somehow given the short end of a deal, I'm sure there wasn't a contract between anyone and Nintendo stating that you were supposed to be getting a certain amount of enjoyment out of it. I'm sorry for those that feel left out somehow by owning the system, but not so much to the point where I'm feeling bad about the intelligent decision I've made by investing in the system and the games that I have. Research and having a good feel for what you like are two key qualities when it comes to buying stuff like this, afterall.

    The other consoles will be taking something away from all this, you better believe it, (hopefully it won't be the raggedy Wii mote). If the Xbox360 had a few more family friendly titles and good games for the casual gamer, they would've slayed the Wii. Microsoft seems to have the most popular titles aimed at the hardcore gamers. If a guy addicted to Fallout or Gears could've gotten nice games that their girlfriends and kids liked too, it would've been over. The worst part about it is most people who play video games knew that the Wii would have five good games tops before it even came out (I fugured those five would be worth it for the price, I'm still on the fence though). I'm no fanboy, I usually buy all the consoles and then pick the games I want. This time around though I couldn't afford a PS3, which kinda sucks because I think Sony usually has pretty good games for me a casual gamer.

    As a Nintendo kid from the age of 6, who played the original NES system 24 hours a day instead of doing homework, I'm torn.

    On one hand, I want to be proud of Nintendo for making such a massive comback. It's a spit in the face to all of those who were mocking the premise of the Wii prior to the release, saying that it will fail (guess what guys? If you said that you don't understand jack about consumer demand). I also want to be proud that they went out on a limb and started something a little different with the wii mote (and let's face it, if you complain about the wii remote you might as well be saying "back in my day" like an old man. Look at the joystick when it first appeared; it sucked, but it evolved into the modern control pad (which still sucks in PS3's case, lol), the same will be true with the wii mote; it will improve.)).

    On the other hand, I'm appauled at some of the games they are churning out. What happenned to the "Nintendo seal of quality"? When did Nintendo become all about making money, rather than breaking ground for original gaming content (rather than just original equipment)? Sure, there are some excellent games on the Wii, but even a rabid fanboy such as myself is starting to look around now. I'm getting a 360 come January, because it has more games that appeal to me now, which is a sad thing to admit. I guess my tastes have just matured (and I don't mean matured as in tons of blood and cleavage in my games, that's just immature), to the point now where cartoon plumbers and storyless zelda games can't hold a candle compared to intelligent, thought-provoking, atmospheric and artistic ventures.

    I just hope that Nintendo starts making some 'art' games too, for us intelligent adults. They've proven that graphics don't matter (hell, they've got 14 year olds playing Megaman9, lol), so now it's time to make intelligent, immersive, realistic games with said graphics. I still believe in Nintendo; I believe they can provide for hardcore and softcore (and even intelligent) audiences, but do they even want to? I guess we'll see.

    I dont understand how the WII sells so well they have a very limited game selection most of which are based for the minority of gamers the kids... I have a wii and the few older person games and I mean FEW they are great but far far too few of them. Guess I am wondering is how does a system who makes very few games survive and sell so well.

    Wanna know something funny? Microsoft and Sony are both creating a motion-type controller for their next console. So, for everyone that hates the Wii, you're probably going to hate it more, because motion-control is here to stay, and they are the future. Hopefully though, either Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony can make it reach it's full potential. Not just mini-games.

    Hmmmm, Well i bought a wii, not for online, not for 3rd party support, but for the games i like from nintendo. I maybe one of the few people that expect certain games from certain companies. I play SSBB with my friends at least 3 times a week, thats on my wii. I use my PS3 for gaming some times, but mainly for the BluRay ((i love the bluray lol)) I don't own a 360 cause it has nothing to offer me at all really... ((and it sucks in my personal opinion)) SO yeah, I do agree that the wii does need good 3rd party support like the PS3 and the 360 get, but then on that note, the other consoles really don't make there own games to much now do they. But that is beyond the point. The point is you really should have known what you wanted from your system when you bought it. I personally like the wii, cause there are like 7 different ways to play it. That appeals to me to some degree, and the other systems don't offer that. Also the other systems don't have Tales of Symphonia *cough* I say Kudos to Nintendo, and to all you people out there just letting you wii gather dust, i don't know how you think by you saying that its going to affect nintendo... cause they got there money and you just got a 250 paper weight. So tell me who's the real silly ones there. So Nintendo is racking in the dough and i have no doubt that pretty soon we will all be getting what we want from them. Cause to me this generation around for them was a catch up race, they fell behind last time now they're getting their stand back and the next console will be great ((and i don't mean the HDWii, thats an upgrade like the PS2 Slim))

    ugh... when will people realize the Wii sucks? It has a few good games like Zelda and Metroid, the typical 1st party Nintendo games.... but that's it. Most of the other games are simply use the Wiimote to shake or shoot. It's silly. Most of the games on the Wii can be done without the Wiimote at all, and probably would have done better on a true next gen machine like the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. It's online multiplayer is so much of a hassle to set up it's not even worth it. Wanna get a system that's actually worth your time and money? Get an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3. Although I am more partial to the 360, my brother has a PS3 and I play it often and it's pretty awesome.

    35 million total sales, and only 7 million in Japan? That doesn't seem right. Usually Japan have big sales for this type of thing. They went big on the DS but don't seem to be going for Wii as much.

    Nintendokid seems to be on the ball today. Big N I agree with everything you said about the Wii. It's mostly shovelware, re-releases, PS2 ports, 1st party, and then there's 3rd party games that sell like crap.

    The VC and BC don't get them off easy. I already have a Sega Genesis, Master System, SNES, NES, N64, Gamecube, and all other desired systems accompanied by the games. Personally I prefer the actual psychical console because they're worth more and is the softwares native hardware thus making them guaranteed to run smoothly. Plus the VC can't have all games available for those hardwares. It's bound to be missing key 3rd party titles, for example Battletoads, Maximum Carnage, or WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade game. The Wii's VC is primarily capable of grabbing 1st party console titles. What little 3rd party VC games they get they're really lucky to have. I'm happy Nintendo is on top of the market since this is the first time in years but at what cost? For the hardcore gamers to be left out of their gaming outlook? This can't be the only way for them to remain number 1. There should be a way to satisfy both the hardcore and the casuals like they did with the DS/N64/SNES. I believe they're capable of doing so but for now I suppose they are enjoying the cash being thrown at them by the non-traditional gamers. This could go on forever.

    Wii is great but they need more games that are good, they make alot of mediocre games but they need to make more good games with more originality, so many games are coming out that are a cheap rip offs of Wii-Sports and they are poor in quality and controls

    Nintendo really need to make better games, nearly everything for the wii is crap, just for everyone and what seems to be good are only games which you can find on other consoles (but i have to say Mario Galaxy was a big hit for me, But Zelda for example lost nearly everything from the charming zelda games i played before) i am a fan of SNES Games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Terranigma and so much more. While Nintendo had a big problem trough N64 and Gamecube Time (only) cauesed beaucase they didnt got any more games from Squaresoft (Square/Enix) i dont know how it was in the US, but i am from germany and all titles from square or enix for SNES were big hits and nearly everyone i knew played those games (also my parents were playing those games) Nintendo realesed much of those games from this time for their DS System also some new titles, i hope they are going to do the same to the wii, but with more new games in the same quality from the great SNES Time (i dont know how much SNES consoles were sold in the time, but i guess it should be more then wii, xbox360, and ps3 together.
    By the way i dont like Xbox and PS3 System (maybe Sony and Micrsoft are giving more hardcore stuff to the market, but only the stuff you could get for PC too, and i would never play a shooter like farcry or whatever with a console pad. I hope that some day squareenix will only realease games for nintendo console ( I dont know why, but since they left nintendo, all there games lost quality just take a look at final fantasy XII and then play Final Fantasy VII which whole gameplay is taken from SNES Times, then play FF VIII there it began to fall ...

    I'm really proud of Nintendo for what they've done this year, considering where they stood in the last gen race. They've actually gained their dignity back with a winning business model. I have to admit, I didn't think Nintendo was going to be THIS successful without the focus on power and features on their console( I also laughed at the ideal of "bottled water".. so what do I know..lol). Nintendo has proven you don't have the most powerful system in order to be successful...making games more interactive,casual, and FUN is enough. I'm primarily an x360 player, but I still have to "tip my hat" to them for their success no matter how their doing it.

    I just bought a Wii and my 8 year old and I are enjoying it a lot!! I still love my Xbox 360 but for family games and the unique interface, it can't be beat. Even my wife, who can't stand video games, is beginning to enjoy the Wii!

    Thank you for proving my point. The games that you mentioned are either:

    a) doesn't sell well (de blob, No More Heroes, combined > 400K)
    b) re-release or available on other systems (RE4, Okami, GH: WT)
    c) mini-game shovelware (Wii Fit, Wario Ware)
    d) still has 1980s "Mario" and "Zelda" attached to title

    the wii really isn't going against the PS3, more like the PS2. Graphically they are about the same. It's not Sony or Microsofts fault that instead of going forward in leaps and bounds with technology Nintendo decided to just take 1 step maybe 2.

    Fandango_Letho why would Nintendo ditch the DS when it is raking in money gloved hand over gloved fist. The thing prints money. Why should they ditch the DS? It is a wonderful system. That is like asking a pizza joint to stop selling pizza.

    Of course. They managed to get money from gamers AND non-gamers alike. There's three to nine good games in the Wii right now, depending on your tastes. This console has been built to lure non-gamers into thinking they'll get real motion controls over every tiny movement they make, but in really, they dont.

    It has also been proven effective to attract adults who wants to exercise their kids with lame games.

    Good game Nintendo, you got rich again. Now do something ressourceful and ditch that Nintendo-toaster-DS project.

    @ nintendokid: Nintendo initially used the VC and BC as selling points for the wii so I think that jd7904 is making a completely fair statement. As for the current gen wii games, Mario Galaxy, SSBB, Metroid Prime 3, Zelda TP, Mario Kart, Wario Ware, RE4, RE:UC, Okami, No More Heroes, wii fit, de Blob, GH: WT (it's better then RB on wii, RB2 isn't out here yet). Then you've got all my wii ware title's too. Add that to BC and VC and I think it's a brilliant line up.
