Ubisoft financials tease Assassin's Creed 2

In announcing first-half profits, French publisher plays coy with release window for next installment in acrobatic stealth action series.

Ubisoft today reported profits for the first half of its fiscal year (the six months ended September 30), and acknowledged development on a key part of its profit plan in future quarters, the much-anticipated follow-up to Assassin's Creed.

While economic woes seem to be keeping other publishers down, Ubisoft has yet to feel the slowdown's effects. Following up on its second-quarter financial report, the publisher today cast a bit more light on its bottom line for the first half, posting operating income of €24.7 million ($31.9 million), nearly double that of the €12.5 million ($16.1 million) it raked in for the same stretch of the previous year.

While those numbers don't account for the last two months of volatility in the economy, Ubisoft executives were optimistic about their holiday sales outlook. In a question-and-answer session with analysts at the end of a conference call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and CFO Alain Martinez said that retailers are being cautious with their day-one orders, but it hasn't been a big issue as they're also quick to reorder when stock runs low. On top of that, they said all indications are that Ubisoft is on track to achieve its guidance for the year.

As for future years, one analyst asked if the second installment of Assassin's Creed would be released in Ubisoft's fiscal 2010. (The original was released to commercial success and mixed critical reception in 2007.) Guillemot flatly refused to give even a hint about the project, but did confirm it was in development.

"We're not answering that question," Guillemot said. "What we just can say is that we are working hard on the product."

    The first one was a brilliant game but I hope the mystery will be revealed in the2nd game the game preview suggests that it will be another HIT GAME!!!!

    On PC will release November 17 2009. i watched the interview and press conference on E3.

    Just hope they add a bit more variety to the missions and a more open ended feel with less repetition.

    I hope is keeps going where we left it and does not jump in something that does not link at all with the previous, and I want an option to give a coin to those people so they can let go and dont destroy my mission , but you have to accept it , its the most beautiful action adventure reality simulation game ever made

    i think the first one was awsome. the story was good and it left off making assassins creed 2 a MUST BUY! I'm sure theres going to be new wepons "got a hold of some pics and there seems to be a spear" and im sure there will be different mods. at least for me AC2 is a must buy.

    Also, you have to be able to die, cause the whole not dying thing and the life regeneration made the game too easy. Oh and the waaaay too easy to execute counterattack, get rid of it... NAO!

    The first one was kind of disappointing, I don't know why they decided to make a new one, but if they do they should make it more challenging and put a lot more material, not to mention less boring, part one felt like a bunch of chores . I have hope that they can make a good comeback however.

    i hope its set somewhere in Japan u no all the martial arts and Samurai swords but like u can do missions in the real time like using guns to fight the templars and goin bak in an illegal version of the animus to find another peice of eden

    Since they won't even give a hint, I think they haven't even started it yet. I could be wrong of course. By the way, reading IGN Review on Assassin's creed was really disappointing. They gave it a 7.5. Just sad.

    they need to mix up the missions...maybe some assassinations, stealth ops, kidnaping, etc. i would like to see some variety with the wepons, and even some customization of the wepons like atachments.

    I liked assasins creed a lot. But the downfall was that it was repetitve. Also after i beat the game i really had no more motivation to play it. I beat the game in 2 days(i had a sleepover and played all night and beat it) so i felt like i beat it too quick because i never played it after.

    I have to say, Assassins Creed had the best swordplay for me to date. If they can expand on that without over complicating it, then i'm in. But my biggest concern are the tasks you had to perform before each kill, that should be changed so you have heaps of different things to do. Don't get me wrong though, I still play the game, and I love it.

    looks awsome but ive got a wii and ive got a ds but the quality is absaloutly crap (and im only 10 rolf so ye idont think my mum woukld havew agreed on a ps3 or a xb360)cus dey both realy 4 older children i geuss 4 me 2010 is not that bad cus at leats i will mostprobably be 12 by den =) i hope it comes 2 the wii dow or somting with good quality 4 nintendo i hvae 2 admit i have never played it and it looks realyyyyyyyyyy good my cus got it so next time i go englend ill defanently try it =)

    Ubisoft is awesome and AC was excellent but i think that instead of working on a AC2 they should finish up with the producers of tom clancy with HAWX and SC:Conviction like that game has been delayed nearly a year and a half and then continue with AC2 but Ubisoft are legends i agree
