Fable II sells 1.5M, DLC due in Dec.

Microsoft touts Lionhead's latest as "fast-selling RPG on the Xbox 360," reveals premium and free download packs coming next month.

Despite Microsoft's best efforts, the $59.99 Fable II didn't outsell the $249 Nintendo Wii last month. Nevertheless, Lionhead's morally ambiguous action role-playing game was the best-selling software title during October, debuting with sales of 790,000 in the US during its first 10 days on the market, according to industry stat trackers The NPD Group.

Today, Microsoft lent those numbers a global perspective, saying that Fable II is now the "fastest-selling RPG on the Xbox 360" thanks to worldwide sales of 1.5 million units. The publisher also revealed that those throngs will be able to expand upon their Fable II experience with the first premium downloadable-content pack, available mid-December.

The DLC will open up Knothole Island, a once-tropical region now mysteriously encased in snow. Players will venture forth to "bring back the sunshine" by undergoing the trials presented in three new shrines. The Knothole Island pack will cost 800 Microsoft points ($10).

At the same time as the premium pack, Microsoft will also be updating Fable II with a set of in-game items on the house. The add-on pack includes knight's boots, assassin's gloves, a weight loss potion, and a collectible silver book. The free DLC will also add support for leaderboards in 50 different categories, which can be checked through Lionhead's official Web site.

I hate to break it to you guys... but I've looked at the file use on the disc. The thing is fully packed. And that's including 34 hours of voicework audio alone. Reams of HD textures, complex meshes, and then of course you have all the running triggers that need to be kept stable on your 360's RAM. They aren't giving this to us for just more money. They're giving it to us so we can have some of it on our hard drive and not be dealing with really terrible performance.

Honestly, I just hope "Knights Boots" signifies the return of Armor. That would be nice, to say the least. Anyway, I totally agree that they need more everyday content, like maybe more clothes, and a greater variety of unique weapons, augments, and collars, among other things. We'll see how it goes. Knowing them, Knothole Glade will include a great deal more than just those shrine quests. Most likely there should be a number of mini-quests, digging spots, and silver chests. *Hopes for a DEMON DOOR...*

Why make a weight lost potion just buy a bunch of celary. I want the story to continue not just throw in a quest. I hope they put in another sex change potion. Hope they add more stuff then what gamespot says

I agree Visiondj1...I HATE how developers nowadays are delibirately leaving out content that could've easily made it into the final game and then charging extra for it later.

  • Visiondj1

    Posted Nov 30, 2008 4:31 pm PT

It should of LAUNCHED with this extra content, as it had way too little to do at release -- even compared to Fable 1. Of course I will end up paying for it and getting it in the end, so some kudos to the for making it available so soon after release.

I love fable 2. I am really excited to get this dlc, However adding a few patches to make coop gameplay more enjoyable as well wouldn't hurt.

I also forgot to mention, Fable 2 is not a real RPG. Last time I checked this game was so low on content its not even funny. Peter is obessed with crossdressing. Thats why he dubbed the male hero down to nothing. But playing as a female hero the only thing that says crossdress on your hero would be the facial hair. Or the male hero hairstyle, or shaved head. Other than that, you pretty much have 50% of stuff for the female and 15% for male. Either way I still think this game is awful and the only ones who loved it are people who are sitting on their a*** lying about there not being any bugs because of their fanboyism. I'll never buy a single game from Peter. Screw them, I hope a new Star Wars Knights of the old republic comes out. Now that game had real choices, and you didn't grow lame horns and a stupid halo to reflect your status of evil or good either.

All I have to say is funk him, Peter better fix those crappy glitches and last but not least. I'm still laughing how he says "new quest, new monsters, and new items". People are going to actually waste space and download this thing only to complain after they find out the new area will have the same junk you can buy out of the regular game from the gift shops. Just like he has you digging up and finding treasures in places that look like they hold nice stuff, but what happens? Oh I'm sorry here is your Rusty Necklace and 3 doggie treats. *smashes peter in the face with the case before shoving it up his you know where*

well shoot, 10 bucks seem like a bit much for 1 island, and a lousy 3 shrines that will probably be owned in about a half hour a piece, at most.
id much rather have gotten that expansion pack for free w/ my preorder than the stupid pub games too.
but ill obv get the free DLC. why not? its free lol.
if the other one was lik 5 bucks, id def get it too.
either drop the price, or add even more.

Fable 2 isn't bad, and thats all I can say for that. I'll keep it around and wait for the review on the expansion, then make my decision. Isn't the point of an expansion to make the game BETTER anyways?

Interesting... Now I have a moral dilemma (trust Fable to be the one to make it ) I generally don't buy DLC unless it is big, and this doesn't sound that big. On the other hand, I loved Fable. Guess I will have to wait and see what everyone thinks of it.

I had fun with the game, but it's got issues and I'm not talking about bugs. The game is extremely easy and short. The side quests don't really count for anything since you don't get anything useful from them. Making us pay for a little more content isn't going to keep me from trading this game in real soon. This will be the fastest turn-around I've ever had on a game by a long shot.

I actually love this game. Never played the first Fable and didn't really hype this one. Maybe that's why I'm enjoying it so much. Too bad about the game-breaking bugs I hear about on the forums :S. I'm not sure if I'm buying the DLC. Maybe, maybe not...

Most my friends dont use internet that much and all agree Fable 2 was a waste of time. Fable 1 was much better and cheaper. DLC is hard to sell when noone has the game anymore because they traded it in already. I didnt listen to PM because I know better I just compared it to the first. Hell as a stand alone it was average at best. If you like it have fun but just cause people didnt doesnt mean they are stubid or somthings wrong with them and vice versa. BTW I dont even own a ps3 so dont go there.

I am mildly surprised no one has mentioned the game-breaking bugs of Fable 2.

I actually enjoy(ed) the game immensely....until I snagged some game-crashing bug (can no longer enter Brightwood....at all...ever). I own every building and have the baddest weapons (so far) and my game has died. Disappointed doesnt properly convey my feeling.

They released a half-tested, bug-filled pile of "good game". Worst part of this story? Lionhead hasnt even acknowledged that the game is totally bugged. Nor do they have a patch in the works (to my knowledge, admittedly, I gave up posting at Lionhead).

Go to any forum that concerns Fable 2. Every one has a thread dedicated to the myriad of game-breaking bugs that have never been addressed.

    Epic fail, IMO.

I don't own a 360, but would love to play fable 2. I like the way DLC is coming faster and faster constantly. I was hyped with all the DLC for other games, but I trade in games before I actually get the DLC.

I am sick of all these freakin game companies expecting us to pay more for something that should be included or put out for free.
I will not pay for some crappy island with a few missions.
We get 100's for the game $60. then an extra $10 for a few?
Ridiculous and I'm not going to be ripped off.

I love the game, but they need to stop trying to take advantage of people. $60 is enough already for the game itself.

  • quietguy

    Posted Nov 25, 2008 8:45 am PT

I don't think people beyond GS is seeing it the way you guys are seeing it. Here, nearly a third of you bash the game for not delivering precisely on its mentioned promises by the hype machine, that is PM. But if you go out there and talk to people, people who wouldn't even bother spending their time rolling through game community sites, you get a vastly different picture.

I believe Fable 2 was a success despite some relevant Live features being left out at launch day. Though of course if you were a sensible person, you'd knew based on previous experiences that hyped up promises were never exactly what they were meant to be; which in this case, just happened.

Everybody wanted to believe you can go free ranging through the FB2 environment with no invisible walls, but instead you're all still stuck on linear roads that takes you to the eventual end. I say you all suckered yourselves into that corner and thus became disappointed.

All I've heard from people I know is that the game is sweet. At first I was dissappointed, but it grew on me, and don't forget to take the malleability of the world into account, its amazing how different albion becomes based on your choices! But i'm the type of person that loves to replay games, so that aspect is tailored to my taste.

The guy above you understood what I said. It's sad when the Xbox 360 has plenty of great RPGs, and this one sells the best. Shallow, short, childish, while not terrible it certainly is over-rated. Can't wait for this comment to "not meet display criteria." Hahaha.

  • Fandango_Letho

    Posted Nov 25, 2008 8:26 am PT

Didn't know people still cared about Fable 2. It didnt deliver its promises, and all my gamestops are filled with used copies of this game. Including mine. Lame storyline, lame main quest ( awesome side quests though ), stupid and clunky aiming system ( works sometime ), bad framerate issue ( this game loads all the time, even more than fallout 3 wich is vastly superior graphic-wise ).

I couldn't care less for this DLC. It'll add what, 35 minutes of gameplay of the 20 hours total provided by the whole game ? ( I finished the game with 100% completition under 21 hours ).

No thanks, I'd rather keep my money for companies that deserves it and won't take everything for granted like you guys feed em with.

It's pretty bad. I mean, the game wasn't good, poor compared to the 1st one, and it's selling super fast. The devs will continue on this road instead of chancing for the best I gess...

PS: I won't buy. My friend have it and I dislike it. I'm WAY more into JRPGs anyway

Well, I'll get the DLC if there's any special weapons or armour there. Otherwise I'll pass, as much as I'd like to see a snow area.

As for the free stuff? Hell yes. Knight's Boots? FINALLY, SOME ARMOUR! Can't wait to see the new full Assassin's gear, too.

MOAR NEW ARMOUR AND WEAPONS! Lionhead will get infinite coolpoints if they bring back Avo's Tear.

What would REALLY impress me is if Lionhead announced that they were actually fixing the multitude of bugs in the game. I had planned on messing around in that game for hours after finishing the main quest, but the bugs became so tiresome that I set it down.
