Blood of Bahamut spills on DS

Square Enix's latest handheld RPG sees cities come alive, literally; local four-player co-op.

Yesterday, Square Enix's Japan arm quietly launched a teaser site for what appears to be the latest title from the role-playing-game-centric developer. The page, which prominently displays the word "Bahamut" in its URL, depicts a monolithic stone creature that appears to have had an entire city built on its shoulders. Unfortunately, the teaser site gave little in the way of hard information, though it did bear a countdown timer that is set to expire on Monday.

Gamers won't have to wait that long to be clued in on Square Enix's new project, however. As reported by French gaming site Gamekyo, this week's edition of Shonen Jump magazine details the publisher's teased project, Blood of Bahamut for the Nintendo DS. Not at all surprising, the game will reportedly be an all-new RPG that the publisher plans to show off at the Jump Festa expo in Japan later this year.

As reported, Blood of Bahamut follows the story of two characters--Ibuki and Yui--who live in a city built upon the back of a dormant giant. For reasons unknown, the creatures revive from their slumber, and people living within the cities find themselves struggling to survive in their now-hostile homes. Gamekyo reports that the game will feature cooperative multiplayer, where up to four players will be able to join forces locally.

No release window, Japanese or otherwise, was revealed for the title.

well I guess its exciting as pretty much anything Square Enix makes is exciting. Yet that is basically no info other thena tiny bit of plot and a name. so I don't know how anyone can say it sounds awesome lol. Hopefully they actually release more info since this is over 8 months old and im just now seeing this. Thinking about finally buying a DS after having one PSP stolen and losing one on an Amtrak train, DS is so overwhelmed with Squareenix games how can i resist.

Looks great, but i think most will agree that it would be far better on a console because it has very high potential, even though FF4 on DS and Crises Core on PSP both looked very good

speaking of that, GI had the original photo brought up and they thought it was a potential Bahamut Lagoon. Never saw a stateside release, I think...but one of the best Squenix games for the old systems.

Where the game will be presented at Jump Festa expo in Japan at the end of the year (info from the web site), we probably won't see a US version 'til next xmas (if at all).

ive so tired of all these damn games for handhelds.. first it was remakes then it was spinoffs and now a new ip.. all their development is going into handhelds.. no wonder its taking forever to get good rpgs this gen!

Interesting though I have my doubts on 4-player co-op on a handheld game.
It's premise looks similar to Shadow of Colossus though only by a little.

I was really looking forward to the reveal since I read about the teaser site a couple of days ago, and with that awesome art of that giant (Alexander?) and the creature above it (Bahamut?), I thought we were in for one sweet next-gen RPG on the 360/PS3. Turns out all that awesome art is just for a DS game.. Kind of a downer.

Also, cool as the art looks, can't help but agree with X-RS. I mean, I love Square, but what odds this will be any different from their usual JRPG offerings (especially those that do not have Final Fantasy in their title)?

Yeah it does remind me of Shadow of the Colossus! This game looks very interesting. Can't wait to read more about it when the time comes.

  • X-RS

    Posted Nov 13, 2008 2:00 pm PT

    wow.
makes you think of shadow of colossus no?

rpgs have great art, but stories are usually lame and the characters look cool, but think out loud, stating the obvious for small minds.

being unveiled at the 'little boys' jump makes me feel like it will be even more typical and childish.

Looks like Shadow of the Colossus on crack, sounds like a really interesting concept. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it might feel more epic on a console, but Square-Enix has done some great portable games, I'll definately keep my eye on this.

  • Zetona

    Posted Nov 13, 2008 1:37 pm PT

It's a neat concept, but being in a city on top of a giant would look much more epic on a console. Hopefully this comes out for more than just the DS.

Bahamut the dragon from Final Fantasy?

  • chronocommander

    Posted Nov 13, 2008 12:27 pm PT

I wonder if this game has anything to do with Bahamut Lagoon, a Jap-only SNES RPG by square released around 1995. Doesn't quite look like it so far, but both are strategy RPGs.
