Far Cry 2 bags 1 million

Ubisoft's open-world African shooter shores up million-unit marker three weeks after launching on Xbox 360, PS3, PC.

The global economic crisis isn't treating all companies equally. Ubisoft, for one, is weathering the storm quite well, posting better-than-expected third-quarter results last month and raising its full-year guidance to €1,050 million ($1.35 billion).

One title already having an impact on those goals is Far Cry 2, which soothed critics like a warm breeze blowing across the savanna on October 21. Ubisoft said today that in the three weeks since since it launched, the Africa-set open-world shooter has sold through more than 1 million units worldwide across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

An ambitious open-world shooter, Far Cry 2 is a sequel of sorts to the Crytek-developed original released for PCs in 2004. With Ubisoft Montreal now at the helm, the game trades in the original's tropical locale for wide-open African plains, replete with megalomaniacal warlords, destructible environments, and dynamic weather effects. Of note, the game boasts 50 square kilometers of open, roamable environments.

Though, I definitely would not buy this DLC for $10 it's still kind of cool stuff. I think if they made this DLC free it would almost eradicate the large amount of disproval for the problems with the game and the semi-late release of patches. Of course they should fully patch the games before they release this DLC, free or not.

It seems that we are happy with this game but by far it is the worst release
    ever from UBI....

I can show a cople of things that pin point this opinion of mine!

    Hardware incompatibilitys

The game haves a total incompatibilitys with Sound Blaster X-FI sound cards, Bouth the Xtreme Gammer and the X-Fi Fatal1ty Have to disactivated in order to play the game ( With no sound), DirectX 10 in Vista gives also a lot of problems, AMD processors with single or duo core as well, Vista 64 bit (in)compatibility , Erros on DirectX9.0C sound and 3D...

Etc a lot more can be found here:

    http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/1821007696

    Game errors and problems:

Game freezes and the sound is lagging, Field of view is messed up in triple display resolutions , The implementation of widescreen video modes in Far Cry 2 is flawed, When loading a level/save, there is a 50/50 chance the textured will become curropted and colors will display wrong , Registration, activation, and serial number issues , Script bugs with missions and buddies, Corrupt saved games, Goes unresponsive during load , Guard posts respawn too fast, No civilians visible...

Well and there are a lot more...

Now It anoyes me a title like this, UBI Makes and bags a Million, cause in the midle of that profit goes the money of thousands of people that payed for a product and can not play it...
...More there is a frustrating silence from UBI Dev team to at least responde the tech suport calls and atend people in the UBI Forum and say something about what it is on the rad to fix this issues and please costumers that bought there game and can't use it!

This is the reazons that by far and as far for me is the worst game ever released by UBISOFT...

If this is fixed I don't doubt the game will be a good game, but the shame of releasing something in this conditions its a mark that sooner or later
UBI will feel in their selling releases...People are giving up on the game and returning it to Stores and will think twice before buying again a new released game from UBI...

    I will..!

    if...
    1. the jerks at the guard post would not spawn that fast after killin them
    2. the game guy would not get tired/fatigued that fast after running a short distance
    3. there are more friendly people on the road
    4. the game guy could carry two primary weapons at once
...I would say this game is the best game I ever played.

    To much to focus on.

I tend to agree with BewilderedRonin. I prefer the stealthy aspect of games like FC1 and all the splinter cell and siphon filter type games. Hence my user name...However, the developers did say this is not going to be like FC1 in many ways. Although there are familiar aspects of the "feel" and look of the game, a lot has been fixed since FC1. I would like to see another FC game based on the character "Jack" and revisit the islands but this time with the new engine, graphics and all the fixes to the driving controls etc. that FC2 has. That being said, the game is still awesome and looks great, plays smoothly on just about any system that meets the min-spec so I have to give it a slightly higher score than BR did...I'd say a solid 8.5

  • metalliod

    Posted Nov 12, 2008 9:23 pm PT

Does that beat the HALO 3 record...?

  • BewilderedRonin

    Posted Nov 12, 2008 7:29 pm PT

I like FC2, but it breaks from FC1 in many ways. FC2 just doesn't seem as "stealthy" as you could be in FC1. There's no prone position and there's no way to "slow walk" so that you don't draw as much attention. Taking out the ability to throw a rock to distract your enemy, like in FC1, was another sore-spot for me.

A 7/10 to me. A fun game, but I was really hoping for more stealth elements.

ill admit, like many say, farcry 2's story is pretty shallow. yes, it does seem like some hollywood summer blockbuster; you are some free agent fighting on both sides of a modern war torn africa finding some arms dealer while you are stricken with malaria, but the game is open ended for a simple reason. you bought the game, you play it your way. if you want to do craploads of side missions before the main game, do it. if you want to make your own multiplayer maps, do it. being a game that big, and picturesque, how can you doubt it? yeah, the ai is wrong sometimes, but what game doesnt have perfect ai? i own gears2 and fable 2 and in gears, ive walked through walls and killed some locust and in fable ive shot people through walls! no game is perfect, so people who are griping about it either dont own it, or just idiots. SHUT UP! quit letting crappy shows like x play run your gaming lives. they said fallout 3(which came out on the same day as far cry) was awesome and you probably bought it. i bought this instead of fallout and just began to play it and havent been this pleased since i blew someone out online in nba 2k9. just shut up. if you dont want to play it, your loss of 60 bucks or your gameque at gamefly.

Love this game so far, I play it on Tuesdays on thursdays. I got other games to play on my other days of the week (like Resistance 2, Dead Space, Midnight Club LA) and prefer to slowly enjoy Far Cry 2. Glad sales are doing great, love articles like this! Won't bother reading the comments though, it truly upsets me of what people write (in bad terms mind you). Hope they get more sales from this great game!

I personally like the game. I agree that it is repetitive in mission variety and the driving can get boring but the Africa itself looks amazing. I also love different guns and different tactics. Also, I don't think AI is that dumb. I already died 3 times in that game and I don't usually die in games..

    Farcry = Disappointing
    Crysis = Disappointing

If it wasnt for the inmprovements in technology that these game engines provided, then there would be real reasons to cry.

This game is good and bad. I played it on the PC. Did just about everything I could in the first act. and had to force myself to finish it. They advertise destructible environments, and there is very little of that. The graphics are nice. open world was cool. Not a true sequel to Far Cry was a BIG let down. No replay value. Very glad I didn't waste my money on it totally because I was able to turn around and sell it for just about what I paid for it.

I love Far Cry 2, for me is a great game.

And for boyfrom93 a bad news is that Crytek sell it the rights of Far Cry to Ubisoft, and part of that money was to make Crysis. Also that's the reason why there's nothing in common with the previous Fary Cry titles.

"I'm 30 hours into the campaign and only 26% done" lmao i beat it in 16 and something hours lol with still doing i'd say about 70% of side missions and capturing half of the guard posts. Have you been looking for diamonds the whole time or something or just screwing around lol?

I'm in no way a fanboy boyfrom93, i've never played the first or instincts predator, i don't think it's perfect in anyway nor do i think it's bad. It's a solid game, but what game isn't without it's imperfections and plus it's different than the others and it's a somewhat unique game with the whole story and enviroment and gameplay for that matter.

I regret buying this game. It's alright, gamplay-wise, but all those little mistakes just make it intolerable. The map editor is good, but coupled with the lackluster multiplayer, it's pretty much useless... why half the people that bought this game haven't even tried the first Far Cry. They got sucked in by the map maker. This game's only a sequel in name. I hope Crytek makes the next Far Cry, because Ubisoft messed up.

Go ahead, rate this comment bad. Shows how much of a fanboy you are.

I was concerned with all the games out this holiday, that FarCry 2 wouldn't get the credit it deserved. It's my favorite game so far and I've played every hit game this year. I've never been so amazed at graphics before and I'm constantly stopping to just look at the beautiful scenery and notice the subtle details. FarCry 2 is amazing and has the biggest singleplayer of the year. I'm 30 hours into the campaign and only 26% done. Even better is the map editor. Gone are the days of having to play the same ole map over and over. I love seeing what beautiful maps players around the world come up with. And to get to play on them is even better. It's almost like Little Big Planet, but with guns! I'm glad this game is selling well, for this is one game that deserves it.

Just goes to show you that marketing wins. If companies wise up and starting putting ads on TV like Ubisoft did for Far Cry 2, even if the game isn't GOTY material, it can really help sales. From what I hear the game is good, but not fantastic. And look, it sold a million copies in three weeks. What do you think is gonna end up happening with games like Fable and Motorstorm now? They're both gonna get a big ass boost in sales and probably sell through the roof, even though they both didn't end up being fantastic, just good.

Bought it, loved it, still haven't finished it(but i will) and anybody who says this game is repetitive needs to take a serious look at what they play. Gears of War 2? Repetitive? Yes. Fun? Of course! Little Big Planet repetitive? Most certainly. Fun? OMG, hell yeah!

Most games out their are repetitive. In shooters you go round and shoot stuff, then go to the next area to shoot stuff and at the end of the level you will find a boss which you need to, ummm, shoot. In racing games you race the same tracks over and over again, using the same types of cars. Does this make these games no fun any more. IMO, no. However, judging by the posts below, there are some people who disagree with me. *Shrugs*.
    Your loss.
