Metal Gear Online gears up 1 million

Multiplayer spin-off of best-selling Metal Gear Solid 4 now boasts million-player army; Konami readying commemorative campaign for November 25.

In August, Konami reported Metal Gear Solid 4 sold over 3 million copies worldwide, helping vault the publisher's quarterly earnings to over $650 million. Designed by legendary game creator Hideo Kojima, the PlayStation 3 game shipped over 1 million units in Europe in its first week, and has sold nearly 1 million units in the US as of September 30, according to NPD Group figures. In Japan, the game sold 500,000 copies in its first week alone.

While MGS4's byzantinely plotted single-player campaign drew the most praise from critics--including a 10 out of 10 from GameSpot--the game also contained a major multiplayer component, Metal Gear Online. Today, Konami announced that the online action component now boasts 1 million users worldwide. In addition to MGS4 owners, that figure also includes those who bought the stand-alone version of the game released in Japan this summer.

To mark the milestone, Konami is having a Commemorative Campaign that will give MGO account holders 10,000 reward points for merely accessing the game. The publisher will also select 30 players to receive 100,000 reward points, which can be used to buy in-game weapons and other gear.

Konami also priced the Metal Gear Online MEME expansion pack, which contains three new maps, at $14.99. It will release "this holiday season" along with a special edition of the GENE expansion that shipped this past July.

    To be honest this is one of the best games I've ever played and i would really like another one to come out....someone choke hideo then slap him into his senses hes the only person that make games like so

    This game is so great why cant they make it pc compatible after all typing is included in this online multiplayer why not step it up and include the only source i got for getting online!

    My best game ever online and offline. I bought meme and gene together for £10 and i think its worth it, 6 new ,maps and 4 characters. The 3 meme maps are v.gd but i dont think the characters are, but i dont really use any apart from my own(hate it when im mei ling, no main weapon apart from a 'send bomb from ship weapon.'

    Im owner of a Ali-Metal character in MGO. Surely u can see me in sniping rooms. i would like to say my tanx for konami team for creating such histroy-making game. but the shop system, doesnt work with other systems, exeptmaster card, or visa. and i myself i hav no access to any of these. so what should i do? wait for konami to make it as a reward for me? lol, or make it free? but even with the old maps, its the best online game i think...

    Omg! MGO is already awesome and now this? Kojima #1! Mgs4 was the whole reason i bought a ps3 even though ps3 seems like such a crappy system right now compared to the xbox360. don't agree comment back or email me (please no hate mail and think before you write)

    Never liked MGO. Just didn't didn't think it had any polish or substance to it. When it comes to MGS4, I think that Kojima and his team are the first out of a small group of Japanese devs to get out of the whole "two years or more behind the rest of the world in development" thing, but when it comes to MGO it's the exact opposite.

    Good news I guess, but not my type of news.

    well this sucks for me..i am unable to connect to the playstation network due to my wireless recently crashing and losing all functionality so i will be left in the dust until i can rack up another 45 bucks to buy another one and connect my playstation 3.

    Awesome, I'll have to make sure to sign in for sure. Haven't been on merely because I have to share one net line between all of my computers (thanks to my crappie router). $15 for MEME? Great!

    As for those whining it's not just 'three maps' more gear is going to be released with it, along with new characters, on top of that there new modes too. Look how much it cost just for a jet pack on WarHawk! Or to buy items you can already unlock on Soul Calibre, now that's a rip off. For all the stuff you get in the MEME its perfectly reasonable.

    Konami are doing an awesome job. The reason they charge for the expansion is so they can keep the servers going, and people working on the expansions. This costs money.

    I mean look at XBOX live you pay £40 a year (or up too £100 if you’re stupid enough to pay monthly) and you STILL have to pay for the extra content. This doesn’t go to running the servers. Admittedly though it does go to help keep people working on the expansions. But then why do the items cost the same as on PSN? Trust me, Konami is being generous here.

    Whilst they've sold 3 mil' copies (this is world wide people. That’s just a fraction of the population), the price of online play would have been figured into their expenditure forecast. And to be honest ALL companies are out to make money, that's life and it's not a surprise.

    The only ones whining about the price are the ones thinking the world owes them something for free, or kids still living with their parents.

    NICE! $15 is reasonable for 3 new maps, a new character and clothing! Its only $15 people! Thats like what? One lawn mowed? And the maps have a top notch design! Great job KONAMI! Paber Bag Army FOR LIFE!

    Nice. I am more of a single player campaign person but I tried MGO once and it was great. MGS4 is in my top 5 greatest games.

    Well,more DLC for the PS3. First Bioshock, and now this. I'm a 360 owner, but I can imagine it will all be pretty sweet. Not enough for me to pick up a PS3 quite yet though. .
