Shred $250 on Logitech's Guitar Hero axe

The Guitar Hero has always offered players a chance to simulate their rock-and-roll fantasies of performing on stage for rabid fans. Now they're getting a chance to simulate the vainglorious excess of the rock-and-roll lifestyle, as Logitech today unveiled a $250 Guitar Hero World Tour controller set for release in December.

Compatible with all PlayStation 3 Guitar Hero games and the PlayStation 2 edition of World Tour, Logitech's premium wireless controller uses materials found in real guitars, from its wood neck with rosewood fingerboard to metal frets and tuner pegs. The peripheral company also used a rubber dome technique found in its keyboards to make the fret buttons quieter than on the standard controller. To protect the customer's investment, Logitech is also including a gig bag to help safely transport the guitar.

Gamers worried that the rest of their fake instruments will look shoddy by comparison, take heart. Logitech is planning to release an entire line of premium instruments that will carry the Guitar Hero license. For spendthrift drummers who can't wait for Logitech to release its own set of skins, there's always the $300 Ion Drum Rocker.

    @KingOfOldSkool

    That really wouldn't work, I mean, I'd love to, but what about when I swap weapons for a pistol, or an assault rifle? I'd feel pretty lame using a machine gun when all it's putting out are 9mm rounds at a semi auto rate of fire. On another note, if I were to use a machine gun, I'd probably shoot through my TV, my wall, and possibly a few of my neighbors. That game wouldn't be too fun for anyone involved.

    Why pay that much more so you can feel like a rock star? I mean, why not learn how to play the guitar and buy a real one instead?

    Seriously they are taking music games way too far. You Could buy an ACTUAL guitar for that much. Learning guitar is way more fun than guitar hero.

    WOW! I'm all for playing Guitar Hero/Rock Band, and an avid fan of both series myself.....but $250? WTF!
    I could buy a Beginner's Fender Guitar Player Pack for AT LEAST $50 less than this, this just goes too far for fake musicians for me...

    I wish they would find a way I can plug my real guitar into my console or something. Maybe Guitar Hero 18 will have that.

    Also... Are we close to the day where there is a GH game that will let us plug in a real guitar?? I think there may be a market for that...

  • MikeDecz

    Posted Oct 27, 2008 10:11 am PT

    I predict that there will be "fake bands" in the future. They already have guitar hero nights at some pubs in my area. With the ability to create songs, I think that there will be a novelty band that comes out and plays the game in front of a crowd as if they were playing real instruments. I figure if someone is making money on it, they will want to get a guitar like this. Otherwise... no. I got an Epiphone Les Paul for $100 more than this thing. I still like to play GH though, because I'm not that good with a real guitar yet. Buttons are easier than strings...

    Wow, what a huge waste of money. Only game fanatics would buy this and keep it as memorabilia. Why not just take that money and buy a "REAL" Gibson or Fender guitar. Playing a real guitar will ALWAYS be more impressive than playing one in a video game.

    Simply put, can't afford it. Thats not to say I wouldn't plunk down the cash to buy it if I could.

    Some people (like me, hate me for it if you will) find it more enjoyable to be able to play a video game (racing, light gun guitar, what have you) than spend the cash to pick up the real hobby. And if playing a video game, no matter the format is your hobby, and you have the cash, why not?

    Okay, So you decided that your time and 250$$ would be spent on a fake guitar with a game instead of a real guitar with an amp. In the time it takes you to learn to play "Through the Fire and Flames" on expert you could be well on your way to playing "Sweet Child O' Mine" in real life.

    @ctg867

    First of all, do you have any idea how much more badass the thing would be if it had strings? And secondly, it doesn't take hours upon hours a day practicing to get good at playing a real guitar, a lot of people just spend a half hour a day practicing and they do just fine.

    @division_9

    No it isn't that most people don't have the skills, it's just that they're too impatient to hone those skills. Anyone, and I repeat anyone, unless they're physically unable to, can learn to play a guitar. Sure it may take a few years but it's well worth the time and money, plus real guitars get you a lot more friends and sex than a plastic guitar will since we know that's why all of the guitar hero fanatics who don't play real guitars play it.

    Real Guitars require skills, most people dont have these skills and would rather just pick up and play with something cheaper then the picture above without spending 2 years of there life on training with a guitar.

    I like playing these music games as much as anybody...but dude, that's friggin stupid...why pay that much when you can buy a REAL guitar for the same price?!?!!? I mean I'm not saying these games are stupid, I'm saying that paying that much for a fake toy guitar is.

    Posted Oct 25, 2008 10:10 pm PT

    Okay I'm not coming here to say go play a real instrument. But 300 for drum set used to play the game and use as a real drum is actually good value. If guitar could've been used to play as a real guitar I would buy it. But no one should spend 250 on a fake instrument thats just ridiculus. (sorry for any spelling errors I'm tired right now).

    Posted Oct 25, 2008 6:04 pm PT

    *Drools all over self*

    Well I think it's a hell of a lot better value then that damn ION Drum Set which costs $350 if you want to have the complete 3 cymbal, 4 pad set up. And for those claiming the ability to change it into a real drum set, and drum brain costs easily makes that a $600+ purchase, so get a grip.

    Real rosewood neck, and metal frets and tuner pegs? That's just plain bad ass. Top that with an overall better playing experience due to the quieter frets buttons, the inclusion of all normal playing inputs (no stupid thumb flicker for whammy or a damn pedal to go into star power), and the add in of a bag to transport the thing and you've got one hell of a package...

    ...albeit an expensive one. I gots ta get me a job, lol. And for the record, I would rather spend the money on this and have a mean looking and awesome playing fake guitar for a game I enjoy then buying a real guitar and spending absorbent amounts of time practicing and not really learning anything fun for a long time. It's not easy to learn to play a real instrument when you have to balance four college classes in high school. Same reason why I don't have a job.

    And KingOfOldSkool, that's not really a good comparison--a better one would be getting a lightgun styled in exacting detail like a real rifle or pistol instead of just going out for Airsoft or Paintball guns.

  • prioritymail

    An outrageous price, but there is definitely a market for it...unfortunately

  • Vulpis

    Posted Oct 25, 2008 4:50 pm PT

    Heh--one difference the article fails to point out between this expensive toy and the Ion set, though...the Ion set, with a simple (but costly) module swap, can be converted into a *real* set of electronic drums. You can't take this thing and turn it into a real guitar. :-/

    As much as I love Guitar Hero, and as much as I hate all the wannabe 'musicians'/music snobs sneering at the people who enjoy playing this GAME, I have to agree with them at this particular point.

    It's a game. It's not a real guitar, and you're not practicing real music. A fake, plastic guitar, that you can get with the game, is fine for practicing dexterity, and as many other musicians/tutors have said, can help people playing REAL instruments.

    But forking out this amount of money for just a peripheral is a little much. I love Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and my plastic guitars. I really do. But I agree; for this amount of money, get a real guitar.

  • almightybob14

    Posted Oct 25, 2008 11:22 am PT

    I still remember when Guitar Hero 2 first came out and the series became huge, people started playing it and then bragging about how they could whoop people at any song. As a real guitarist, my response was always "Now play it on a real guitar and see who whoops who." Now I can see me giving that response and then they'll shove that thing in my face saying it's like a real guitar. Of course, then I can always tell them to make it to where it has 132 buttons and six strum bars.
