PlayStation tunes in to YouTube

SCEA establishes trailer subsection of popular video-sharing site, promises to showcase user-generated content on it in the future.

User-generated content is on the rise in the world of gaming, and Sony wants to tap into it in a big way. One of the biggest PlayStation 3 releases this holiday season is Media Molecule's Little Big Planet, which allows players to create and share their own worlds. The latest PS3 firmware update (expected to go live today alongside the new PSP Store) is adding support for capturing in-game screenshots and videos, one of the more straightforward ways users can create and share their experiences with others.

Now Sony is embracing the poster child of user-generated content, YouTube. The popular video-sharing site--which has no content other than what's uploaded by its users--is now playing host to an official PlayStation channel. While the page currently features little more than a selection of game trailers, Sony's plans call for it to incorporate user-generated content and contests.

This is only the first of numerous YouTube channels Sony has planned. The PS3 maker will be introducing game-specific pages in the future, starting with a Little Big Planet channel that's launching in November. For an idea of just what can be created using Little Big Planet's suite of editing tools, read up on a recent Parsons the New School of Design competition, which challenged students to make levels for the game over a marathon 24-hour development session.

Jebril... Umm.. You might want to check your facts. I've seen at LEAST a few developers say a dual layer wasn't enough. Most recently it was ID software talking about how they'll have to compress textures just to get the game to fit on *2* dual layer DVDs. They would have stretched it out to 3, but MS charges too much per disc for licensing.

Hell, the sound in heavenly sword ALONE took up over 10gb of space, since its in entirely uncompressed linear PCM, which makes the quality amazing.

And that doesn't even compare to MGS4. They originally wanted to put on multiple languages, but they wouldn't fit on a 50gb Blu-Ray. Any time a game has to be multiple DVDs that means its not enough space. I've even seen more than a couple PS2 games take up 2 DVDs.

oh, something I forgot to mention. There are other things they can do with Blu-Ray as well. Like how Stranglehold included the original "Hard Boiled" movie on the same disc.

You would have to include a separate disc if it was on DVD, which would cost more money and wouldn't be HD.

autolycus the blue ray disc has more storage capacity more torage capacity = more content, the space is there for developers to use as they please

I honest think that Blu-Ray for video games is completely overated, but the developers that are part of PSDN (assuming acronym) are told to take advantage of it as much as possible as more people will purchase the system and therefor they will generate more sales and more profits. I can write pong on blu-ray if you want me to. Doesnt mean its NEEDED. I can also say during an interview that I was running out of space on DVD9 and BRDVD was a mandatory requirement. Everyone would believe me(especially the fanboys) and suddenly it would become a "fact"(which it isnt). Truth me known only the people making the games truly know if it is needed or not. Heck, the darn textures arent even in 720p yet, because the processors and GPU cant handle the load on the system.

Blu-Ray - To make games like Little Big Planet which 360 cant handle cuz they dont have enough room on their discs?,
    ------------

you sure about that because LBP isnt really that BIG of a game. If elderscrolls can fit on DVD9, LBP is no problem!

  • darkride66

    Posted Oct 16, 2008 11:16 am PT

@ Jebril. But we're already hearing developers complaining about shortage of room on DVD's. Clearly there is an issue as games become more and more complex. I don't think that listening to game developers concerns would necessarily make you a "Sony Fanboy".

As for buying huge TV's while other people in the world are worse off, that's reason right there to take advantage of how good we've got it. Because we can. Not saying that we shouldn't concern ourselves with the plight of the world but I'm thankful every day that I live in the world I do - and I plan to live my life and enjoy life because others aren't that lucky. I grew up a welfare kid, was quite used to all our meals provided by the food bank. Now that I'm a grown professional, damn straight I'm going to live my life to the fullest - 92 inch HD projection screens for my video games and all. You should too!

I'm all all for games like LittleBigPlanet which do require Blu-Ray...but that's it.

LittleBigPlanet.......that's the only game that really needed all that space, MGS4 and other games really more did huge uncompressed and real time cutscenes as well as uncompressed data to use up more than 10 gigs. I'm not bashing Blu Ray I just think ITS WAY too early to implement this into a gaming console. As it's just way too expensive and most developers have done absolutely nothing special with the extra space given.

And honestly if you disagree with my logic.....IDK you have to be a hardcore Sony fanboy.....this is coming from someone who does like Sony as well, but....ya Blu Ray and HD in general just seems like......DUMB. I mean playing games is what its suppose to be but now we're talking about tiny effing pixels on our movies and games to make it look better while people are starving in Africa and we decide to buy huge 50 IN HDTVs for our viewing pleasure? I'm not saying entertainment in general is bad, BUT HOW RICH do you want to be before you start caring about what else is going on the world, and look at the giant corporations and say "No.......I don't want what your selling to me, it's pretty effing useless".

Just like trophies and their promised in-game custom soundtracks and in-game screenshots, it will be slowly implemented and poorly maintained I bet. I support Sony and the PS3, but judging from what I've seen, it may be another gimmick.

Wow pretty sad that Sony could ADD a feature and be dissed for it. How could adding something that will benefit some, and not bother those who dont want it be lame. Also I updated my PS3 last night? Why is it being talked about in this article as a future update. Also, Sony announced the youtube thing along time ago...well I guess not with the special PS3 page like talked about here

I am confident Media Molecule will be able to handle whatever traffic hits their servers starting next week. Sony is doing a MASSIVE marketing push for this game and will make sure that their exclusive IP gets all the support it needs. If Warhawk can work perfectly, there's no reason LBP can't.

i keep hearing all this crap about being able to play music while you play videogames. Honestly it can be distracting, and you have to conbtrol it so it doesn't cut in to actual dialogue, i mean if you're so desperate, put a CD on your stereo or play some music on your computer with Itunes or Winamp. I never understood the NEED to play music playlists on the console, there are plenty of EASIER ways to do this already.

It just comes down to nitpicking and wanting the system to do you everything the other guy does. Maybe the next firmware update will have it make breakfast for you...

also - will you be able to share your video through the ps3 in the same way that you send messages, and will your friends who are looking at your game card be able to select the video or pic and view it without you sending it to them...

  • jasonbarbour

    Posted Oct 15, 2008 3:06 pm PT

    - are you just going to press a button, like the ps button, and select record or something or will the ps3 automatically record like in halo 3, and if you choose top save and edit the material you can then upload it... i would prefer the latter so if something awesome happens i a game and im not recording it i can still show it off to my friends... whats the point in a recording system that you have to prepare for - amazing moments dont come when your trying to video it...

to the guy who said EA would never have custom soundtracks you are wrong. They already came out with a sports game that does just that. MLB 08 The Show

what games are you guys playing - most of the games i play have great soundtracks - I play cod4, Resistance, Gears, MGS4, Halo3, etc... and i never have a problem with the soundtrack - so whats this hannah montana crap you guys are talking about?... I especially like halo's sountrack.... i fel like the soundtrack matches (in many cases) the action and plot in the game - maby less so in online as the developers cant always predict the action, but its not awefull, do you guys just not like the type of music or orchestra, theme music, etc... (this is why i need to know what games your talking about)...??
