Mirror's Edge trilogy planned
Senior producer says EA DICE game is first installment in "three-story arc"; level editor planned for sequel.
In the past, Electronic Arts has gained notoriety for being overly reliant on sequels and one-offs for its many gaming franchises. That reputation has been turned on its ear this year, with the publisher bringing to market a number of new properties including Spore, Dead Space, Army of Two, and Mirror's Edge. Of course, that doesn't mean that those new properties will simply be one and done.
In an interview with AusGamers, EA DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien confirms that the first-person action adventure Mirror's Edge will be the first in a three-game series. "The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," said O'Brien in response to whether EA would carry the series on in perpetuity. "I think there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story. But certainly for these first couple games, it's all about Faith. It's all about her experience in the world."
O'Brien also had a few words on the as-yet-unannounced sequel. Namely, he noted that one of the primary features being planned for the next game is a level editor
"It's something we're probably going to look at for the sequel," said the loose-lipped producer. "It will be great, it really will be great. Creating a level editor is a skill in itself, and that's a lot of work. And if we do it, we want to make the level editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is. And that's going to take us quite a lot of time. So that's something we're looking at for the sequel."
Mirror's Edge will be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11, with the PC edition following sometime this winter. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Time Trial mode from last week.
