TGS 2008: Sackboy leads Sony booth offerings

Little Big Planet featured prominently at Sony TGS booth alongside adults-only showings for Resistance 2, Killzone 2.

TOKYO--Sackboy, Little Big Planet's main character and now default PlayStation mascot, is only supposed to be a small fellow, but a gigantic version was rolled out for Sony's plus-size booth at this year's Tokyo Game Show. The big Sackboy was seated around a slowly spinning globe, and formed the centerpiece of a busy Sony booth which had dozens of games on show for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

While Little Big Planet took center stage, plenty of other Sony titles were allowed to shine, albeit behind closed doors that attendees needed proof of age to get past. Upcoming first-party titles Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation could only be accessed by those over the age of 17. There were still plenty of other PS3 titles for the underaged to play, however, with games such as MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, and more on hand.

Plenty of PSP and downloadable PlayStation Network titles were also playable, including Loco Roco 2 and Lumines Supernova. The PSN section was also home to the decidedly kooky Tetris-like Gomibako, which sees players having to stack as much garbage as possible into a large junkyard bin.

    Yeah, that was/is true. Kratos definatley started to become the face for SONY PS2 and kinda of still is cuz he's a DLC for HotShots Golf and LBP.

    brendanhunt you mean Lara Croft. And you gotta be kidding if you think she was Sony's mascot, considering the Tomb Raider games weren't even exclusive to any of the PlayStations.

    Crash was indeed Sony's mascot during the PS1 era, and they didn't really have one during the PS2 days (there wasn't really any mascot war anymore.. Sonic and Crash had both faded away, thankfully in the latter's case), but I guess you could say Kratos was/is their mascot in the PS2's later years.

    crash was the mascot... but who really cared lol. personally i never liked him or his games. blah especially the kart race ripoffs. i will give him this, he had some funny ass comercials back in the day lol

    Gomibako looks super awesome, you guys did a great job on covering the tgs 08 but I would have loved to see stage demos videos.sophia could have done those

    Sackboy as the new unoffical SONY mascot is fine with me. My question is... who was the original mascot for SONY? I believe Crash Bandicoot was the unoffical mascot for SONY for a couple of years on PSone, but I don't think PS2 had a mascot to represent it.

    I dont think Sony has to announce anything new until E3. The games they have coming between now and then are just grade A quality, and I honestly don't think I'll have enough time in a day to give them the attention they are worth

    home is on its way. I have the beta right now and I'm guessing it will be out by next summer but thats just my guess.

    Ok, something is missing here....hmm...cant put my finger on it.....uhhhh I HATE IT when that happens. Some big Sony app that is gonna "release" sometime before the end of time or so....what is it.

    Oh....HOME! Thats it. Where is Home? I thought it was such a done deal Sony, ready to recant your "gonna come out this year fer sure dudz" staement?

    The LBP beta was to test the online code, server-side, mainly, so not a problem if the disks had gone gold. and they'll always have the option to update for some "patching", Media Molecule confirmed that they'll support the game fully with DLC for at least a full year.

    Sackboy is a perfect mascot for Sony. Sackboy is just too damn cute. I personally can not wait for LBP. It's going to be great.

    Littlebigplanet seems to be the killer application of the ps3..and believe me, i played the beta and it was -awesome-..and it was a beta...but i still dont get it though, why would they make a beta after the game gone gold? shouldn't they like test out the game? or maybe they already did with a closed beta?

    Having been to Japan, I bet they have Sackboy cell-charms, keychains, plushes...and i want 'em!! Other than that, Sony's got a handful of great titles, though its missing a lil sumthin...God of War & Uncharted2 to name a few...

    Sackboy rocks, and LBP is a AAA title. But... I'm hoping Sony rolls out more than this. Where are these 9 exclusive games that were supposed to come out? I mean, I'm very excited for LBP, R2, and K2 but this is all we ever hear about.

    All great games but I'm hoping Sony gives out a little more at TGS.

    And I wish Sony would come up with more non-shooter first party exclusives. Wonder if atlus is ever gonna confirm the SMT game for PS3.
