TGS 2008: Tekken 6 smacking Xbox 360

Namco Bandai kicks off Tokyo Game Show with confirmation that long-awaited PS3 fighter will launch on rival console simultaneously in fall 2009.

TOKYO--The current generation of consoles has seen a number of longtime exclusive third-party games migrate to multiplatform releases. The Devil May Cry franchise was a Sony exclusive brand until the fourth installment debuted on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII has also shed its exclusivity and will be appearing (in the West at least) simultaneously on Microsoft's and Sony's platforms.

Now, one more once-stalwart Sony exclusive has gone multiplatform, as Namco Bandai today opened up the 2008 Tokyo Game Show by revealing its arcade fighter Tekken 6 would be launching worldwide for the Xbox 360 in fall 2009, simultaneously with the previously announced PS3 edition. The Xbox 360 version of the game will mark the Tekken series' first installment on a non-Sony system since the 2002 Game Boy Advance experiment Tekken Advance.

Tekken project director Katsuhiro Harada--in an exclusive interview with GameSpot--said taking the Tekken series to more platforms would allow even more fans to enjoy the franchise.

"Timing was an important factor in this decision. As you have the 360 and the PS3--both relatively high-powered platforms--out at the same time frames. Both of them have high 3D specifications. And since Tekken is most famous for its graphics and visual design as a 3D fighter, we felt the high specs of these machines lend themselves very well to having the game on both consoles," he said.

Harada admits there will be challenges in taking Tekken 6 to the 360, given that the original arcade version was built on a PS3-based architecture. "When we tried to move it to the 360, it would be a lie to say I wasn't concerned. It is quite difficult. For example, on the PS3 you have the Blu-ray Disc as well as the hard disk, which lends itself to a lot of options for the game. We don't necessarily have this for the 360, where it has a DVD and it may not have a hard disk by default. So there are various things that we have to overcome when porting this to the 360, but I'm sure we can do it," he said.

Tekken 6 will include a number of new characters which Namco Bandai said will result in the largest roster the series has seen to date. The game also expands on the way character customizability has been used in previous Tekken titles, with special items affecting gameplay and allowing new moves to be performed. The console versions of the arcade brawler will also feature online play.

This is just the latest example of Namco Bandai opening up its premiere franchises to multiplatform development. Xbox 360 launch title Ridge Racer 6 marked that series' first non-Sony console appearance since 2000's Ridge Racer 64, while Ace Combat had only flown the Sony skies on consoles before Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation launched on the 360 last year. The Namco Bandai multiplatform flow goes the other way as well; last year's Xbox 360 role-playing game Eternal Sonata debuts on the PS3 later this month.

    I think in the attitude of Namco-Bandai it sounded more loudly the money of Microsoft. The Japaneses though they have it sweats own identity they are sold very much to the American values and specially to Microsoft. If Sony wants to made competion with Microsoft, has to have their own and exclusives products and to mantain them. Sony does not owe anything to Microsoft not even to anybody. The MIcrosoft wants the total monopoly of the pc's sofware and hardware, because Intel is from a long time ago subservient at Microsoft, consoles hardware and sofware with the companies that develop the hardware and the software to them what become subservients to the interests of the Microsoft. It is what's hapennig with Namco-Bandai. A game like Tekken 6 that was developed from the ps3 hardware never it should be multiplatform.

    I'm so late to this news, . I feel bad for bad mouthing the Tekken series all this time being a huge 360 fan. But then again I've been a long fan of Tekken, just not a fan of the PS3. I'm feeling ecstatic right now about this news, and yes I will pick me up a copy now.

    BTW, 360 has a decent control pad for playing fighting games, don't listen to those naysayers. I have Virtua Fighter 5 Online for my Xbox 360 and I have no issues with using the system's controller.

    i have a different meaning about the PS controller..
    the X360 is more designe for ur hands then the PS Controller is.. im a PS360 onwer and i have been playing om PS sinc 1995. but i stille think that the X360 Controller is better becuse of the designe to ur Hands..

    the only thing that i like about the PS3 Controller is the Dual Shock 3 Funtion i love that part of that Conroller...

    Oh GAZ9000... PS controller rocks! LoL! i dont mind the 360 controller ... BUT ... PS controller makes more sense, feels better to hold, is more practical and smaller. (I Have a ps3 & 360... so i know these things) Hahahahha... :-)

    i think its highly exaggerated the way some people (especially ps3 owners who alot of have prob never used a 360pad and are just jumping on the battle wagon)are going on about the 360 controller being terrible to use and impossible to use with fighting games..everyone knows it doesnt have the best of d-buttons,but its nothing like as bad as some people make out..i can still play streetfighter2 fine and pull off dragon punches and any move at will every time..and that game requires far faster and precise d-button movements than tekken..you can get used to any d-button over time..it makes me laugh when i see ps3 owners coming out with things like"how are you gona cope" or "this game will be impossible with the 360 d-button"..what a load of rubbish..if some of you ps3 owners could play the against the pros players on xbox live at a fighting game you would quickly learn that the 360 d-button isnt such a burdon as you make out and would get a gaming lesson..

    Hey i guess its good for buisness, Im not hating on the move, i just wanna see how Xbox guys are gonna cope with the D-pad, cause i have a ps3 (getting tekken for that) and i dont wanna go over my friends house to play xbox and be weirded out by the controls.

    are you for real? what are you, twelve? some of us actually own all 3 consoles because most are not sheepish blind followers of branding, and prefer gaming to be FUN rather than bragging rights. Get over this fanboyism bull%*&^, it's 2008 for christ's sake. on the topic at hand: the more the merrier. I think it's great when game's branch out, because it gives the maximum number of people a chance to play an awesome franchise (DMC4 and whatnot). I used to have a 360 and it crapped out three different times on three different consoles. So even if I were to be blessed to play SC:Conviction idk if I could based on my previous experience with that crap ass system. That's not fanboyism, that's just truth. I hated everything Microsoft put me through and I will never buy their systems again.

    It's all well and good for everybody I think. I own a PS3 and my friend owns a 360, now atleast we can play Tekken when we go to each other's place. Anyway I think that 360's are for people without decent gaming rigs since most 360 exclusive games are out on PC as well. If you want to count games there really isn't much difference in terms of REAL exclusives. (i.e. games only on one console and NOT on PC.)

    i totally agree with rami the great i waz a tekken fan ever since tekken 3 and it was immediately my favorite game, so i ended buying ps2 mailny for tekken nd even ps3 mainly for tekken once again but to see my favorite game in the hands of a rival console is just rididculous.. therez already enough gamez sony lost...gta,dmc, and now this?? unbelieveable hopefully killzone, resistance, LBP, and socom will all combine to make up for this loss.. but rite now its lifeline is hanging on mgs4 which could not be rumored enuff to go multiplatform!!!

    I can't believe it's going to Xbox360. That really pisses me off. I have all the Tekken games. The Tekken franchise has always been on Sony. It loses the value of the game when it goes multi platform. It makes me not wanna buy the game anymore. I'm sure Xbox360 fans would hate if the Halo franchise moved to PS3 when they make a new Halo or even if Gears of War 2 went on Ps3. Why? Because it would ruin the value of the game if it goes multi platform.

    For those who say that this is bad for Sony when the exact same game is still going to be on the PS3. How is this bad? For those who are saying why bother getting a Ps3 when all the same games are on the 360 ever heard of personal preference?

    I don't see why this is a problem, people should have just realised by now that multi-platform gaming is the way its going to be. Its all a good thing for us, it increases sales of the games and gives developers more money to make better games.

    I wouldn't be surprised to see upcoming PS3 games like God of War 3 also becoming multi-platform. Seriously if FF XIII can go on a multi-platform release, then just about anything Sony called an exclusive can. But as I said, you should just all be happy more people can play these games without being forced to buy a new console.

    .....kind off. I own Wii, PS3 and 360(for comparing).
    Wii is best at multiplayer with lots of people in your house, and yes...parties!
    PS3 is best at quality of entertainment, PS3 has a lot of media supports, like AAC(which the Wii has), Blu-Ray, music, etc.
    360 is best at single player games(for yourself), and playing with other people online.

    Wii is more of "sharing to people when playing console, do want to play as well?"

    PS3 is more of "entertainment, the better version of DVD's and Freeviews"

    360 is more of "this is my console, no one's gonna play it other than me"

    All 7th gen consoles got their pro's and con's, their good at's and bad at's.

    Why why should all the exclusive ps3 games move to xbox 360 this is becoming ridiculous why not move halo 3 to ps3 or halo 4 this will reduce ps3 sales in the long run

    I have a PS3,Xbox 360 and a wii.
    Wii is good for party games,PS3 is good for watching movies and the Xbox is the best for gaming.

    It is common knowledge that the PS3 hardware by the numbers is superior to the 360. In practicality, however, PS3 has yet to outshine the 360.

    Here are the GameSpot scores for notable multiplatform games:

    Assassin's Creed: PS3-9.0, XBX-9.0
    Devil May Cry 4: PS3-8.0, XBX-8.0
    Star Wars Force Unleashed: both 7.5
    GTA4: both 10.0
    Madden 09: both 8.0
    Soul Caliber 4: both 8.5

    No mention of PS3 port superiority. How much you wanna bet the scores will be the same for Fallout 3, Street Fighter 4, and ultimately, what we are discussing, Tekken 6? I bet the scores will also be the same for Splinter Cell Conviction...oh wait! You all won't be getting that game!

    Show me a PS3 port that scored higher, sold more, and/or provided more content than the 360 counterpart. I'm not talking about Darth Vader, that's exclusive content. Not talking about how Bioshock and Eternal Sonata will have extra content on the PS3 because that stems from the fact that it's already been released and simply just being tweaked for a re-release. I'm talking about actual content that was provided on the PS3 and not the 360 because of hardware/DVD limitations. PROVE ME WRONG.

    i have to disagree with the comment about how good gears of war is online. i think it's quite poor, there's no straight out "team deathmatch" with respawning. And the health/cover system has not been thought out well enough online as you can hide to easily once hit, and you recover to quickly which makes weapons like the assault rifle (lancer) useless because a player needs 10000 hits before dying. Each game i have played is just a race to the sniper rifle.

    This is not good news. playstation has lost another exclusive title to the xbox. So when is the ps3 going to get some 360 exclusives? Halo or Gears anyone?... It seems to be all one way traffic at the moment. I have both consoles so it does not effect me heaps, however this would be really frustrating for people with just a ps3 or fanboys

    Im going by gamespot rating,which should be a fairly informed opinion,compared to opinions on this, which differ between everyone so yes some people think MGS4 isnt so good, some people think its great.So its not false, its just not the same as your opinion

    BTW you seem to think life just stops between games coming out. I asure you thats not the case, for me at least

    Have you ever tried looking at two games being played on a pair of screens, one with the 360 and another with the PS3, but you were not told which screen was playing on what console?

    Guess what? You'd never be able to tell difference.

    This BS about one console looking better than the other just isn't true, we've even tried it at the game store, kind of like the Pepsi challenge back in the day and people couldnt pick out which console was playing on the screen. Most people just said it looks the same, some noticed a few differences between the two images, but none claimed one being superior to the other.

    Get over it people. Stop the damn fighting already, the consoles are equally powerful when it comes to gaming. Outside of gaming I won't say anything because then the story changes, but in the end they are both consoles and the gaming capability is what matters the most.

    Bluray on PS3 is a bonus for some, XBL is a bonus for others, it really depends on the user what they need. But in the end they are both equally powerful and capable of playing games.

    I always like to see what the idiots talking about the 360 have to say, such as MGS4 is better than all the 360 games! (i have MGS4 and it gets crapped on by a group of games 360 has.) its one that u beat and never play again. Another thing y do u guys keep trying to come up with names that u can call the xbox or its fanboys? like Xbot sounds retarded along with 3fixme and i actually saw someone write this, garbage box360, THE GUY EVEN PUT LOL AT THE END! do u know how stupid u sound! Just say 360 fanboy, its good enough. Now back to subject, the 360 might make both versions less flashy but dont forget how many multiplat games came out looking better on the 360 and dont forget how many were held back because it took so long to develope on the PS3 and they wanted a simultaneous release so they hold both back. Just think about it.

    i bet after 20 years ms will still pay developers to make projects on xbox360 and then port them to ps3 and pc... its quite sad rly we are getting hold by some junk hardware... i was expecting astonish gfx and content in so many games... but no they are xbox360 based, honestly i dont know why did i even bother getting a hd4870.

    rofl nintendokid ps3 is superior in terms of graphics, even on the xbox projects ported to ps3, some of those are devil may cry 4, gta4, star wars the force unleashed.... xbox360 dvd holds up to 9gb of content while a blu ray disc holds up to 50gb of content so yeah.... there will be ALOT of cuts for both consoles thanks to the xbox360 limitations, that includes the low gen tri core cpu too.

    Tekken 6 is already golden in Japan (arcade). The console versions will just be a port of the arcade. You are telling me that there will be less number of moves or costumes on the consoles because of the limitations of 360? You gonna stand there and tell me that Namco will have to exclude Tekken Golf because DVD does not have as much storage as BD? Absurd!

    Fact: there are no multiplatform games in which the PS3 port is superior in terms of graphics, score and/or content.

    Fact: Street Fighter IV's arcade transition to home consoles is perfect for both PS3 and 360. This should be no different for Tekken 6. By the way, GameSpot noticed at TGS that the PS3 version of SF4 took longer to load between bouts. Bwa hahahhaahh! Here you are, making fun of the 360, and it is the PS3 setting back the console versions! Oh the irony.

    Resistance series,Ratchet and Clank series, Little Big Planet, InFamous,MGS4,Uncharted,MotorStorm,Killzone2, the list goes on. Time to pull your head out of your @ss. But its about quality not quantity,and unless im mistaking, MGS4 is better than every single 360 exclusive out there.

    Look at it this way. If Tekken comes out for 360, the game has been cut down to even between the PS3 and the 360, even though the Tekken fanbase will expand, no one will experience to true potential of what TEKKEN 6 produces. Anyways, let's hope for the best future.

    This really shouldn't be such a big issue as far as exclusity is concerned, after all the developer/publisher of Tekken 6 is Namco-Bandai, and they release games for everyone. And besides, lately they've been favoring the X360 with exclusives like Eternal Sonata (timed), Tales of Vesperia, Beautiful Katamari, and Ace Combat 6, and they also released Soul Calibur IV for the X360. Is it really that big of a suprise that they'd finally release Tekken for the X360? Besides, after seeing Sonic in a Nintendo game I just about thought anything was possible.

    I am surprised that Tekken 6 is not going to be a PS3 exclusive, but to look at it on a positive side, it will help the Tekken franchise expand its fanbase. Ninja Gaiden is another title that was an Xbox exclusive but it has expanded franchise for having it on the PS3.

    Not true. Were you in hibernation when Microsoft was pushing games such as Forza, PGR, Crackdown, Halo, STOLEN BY PS GAMES: Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, Oblivion. Mass Effect, Too Human, Blue Dragon, Viva Pinata, Lost Odyssey, Fable, Castle Crashers, Aegis Wing, Gears of War, and Dead Rising (There is another version coming out for the Wii but it was a Microsoft exclusive first so I'll count it anyways.) These games you can only play on Microsoft systems with the exception of a select few and I happen to think they're very original. Xbox 360 and PC both have a healthy catalog of games too.

    As far as I'm concerned Playstation and Xbox are neck and neck when it comes to having original games. Sony has a history of "stealing" games from Microsoft now they are doing the same to them. If everything remained exclusive then PS guys wouldn't be able to play Bioshock or Eternal Sonata and that would be ashame. Bioshock was a AAA title. I would have thought that Microsoft loosing Bioshock as an exclusive would be a huge blow to 360's fanbase.
