Dead Space terrifies factory

EA's new sci-fi horror IP goes gold, set to infect NA PS3s and 360s October 14, PC October 20; UK/EU debut set for October 24; special in-game suits available first two weeks after launch.

Sometime in early 2007, Electronic Arts executive producer Glen Schofield called a meeting with his supervisors to pitch them an all-new intellectual property. The result was Dead Space, an action game that combines Resident Evil-esque horror survival elements with a sci-fi setting straight out of the films Alien and Event Horizon. It follows an engineer whose routine repair mission to a deep-space mining ship is scrapped when he discovers an alien infestation that has killed the vessel's crew--and transformed the rest into unspeakable horrors.

Now, almost exactly one year after it was first unveiled to the public, Schofield's vision has become a reality. Today, EA announced that the game's gold master has been sent to the factory. In North America, the game will ship for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 14, with the PC version to follow on October 20. In Europe and the UK, the game will launch on all three platforms on October 24.

As an incentive, EA is offering those who buy the PS3 and 360 versions of the game at launch a free, platform-exclusive in-game suit. Anyone who logs onto the two consoles' respective online stores within two weeks of the game's launch can download a PlayStation-themed Obsidian Suit or an Xbox-themed Elite suit. Both suits will have advantages over the standard in-game armor, providing increased inventory slots and tougher protection against spikes, tentacles, and other space-monster weapons.

Cash-flush Xbox 360 owners seeking the deluxe Dead Space treatment can shell out $149.99 for the Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition. Available only through EA's online store, the package includes Starz Media's Dead Space: Downfall animated movie, a bonus-content DVD, a lithograph, a 97-page art book written and illustrated by the game's designers, Image Comics' 160-page Dead Space graphic novel, and a crew patch for the spaceship Ishimura. The Ultra Limited Edition has not been announced for any other platforms.

How about the PC suit? come on guys?

I went back on to the PlayStation site and the suit was actually free...did not realize that...I bought Dead space before it was actually released...also there are two suits: "Obsidian and the Scorpion Rig"...

I bought the suit and the extra slot space (you get the space when you buy the suit) for ammo, health or what ever you want to use it for. It cost $2.49 @ the PlayStation 3 store under ADD ON's. The suit is cool looking, gives you extra protection and of course having extra slots is great too.

$150 limited edition for a game that can be beat in less than 10 hours?

Sounds a bit wonky to me....

Dead Space was a beautiful ride but someone needs their head checked at Concept Production.

So, since the 360 is white and green, 360 owners are doomed to get the lame versions of all platform specific extras? First Yoda, now this this ugly thing?

Is it worth the performance boost to look at that outfit the whole game?

you download the suit off marketplace ~ it's up now (i have it). then, when you're in the game, goto one of the "store" booths and you "purchase" it for 0 credits. it's a cool suit ~ WAY better than the suit you start out with.

You buy it in any of the stores (it costs $0)

Did anyone get the suit yet (doesn't matter on which console)? Because I want to know how do you get the suit if you buy the game on launch?

    @BBoss06:
The arguement, or rather "bytching" (as you refer to it) is the result of the fanboyism that comes with consoles systems competing with PCs. Console players are typically unable to understand the concept of investing so much money into a single system. They paid a single price, and can play all their games guaranteed, so they figure they've got a better position than PC owners.

Those of us who've invested extra money in PCs know that the very same games very frequently run many times better than console versions, and are more enjoyable. Take Mass Effect, as an example. I've played both the console and PC versions, and the PC version is vastly superior, and more fun to play. It also looks better on my TV than the X360 version does.

thats a pretty cool concept, it will most likely get a few extra sales, i ordered it after watching a couple videos , and it will most likely hold me off until Resident evil 5 comes out. as for the ultra limited edition... lol, its funny, 150 bucks.. i wont go that crazy.

There's a lot of idiots posting here...play your PC or console and stop bytching. Just because you have "the best" gaming platform doesn't compensate for the lack of an adequately sized pen15. I'm sorry, but it doesn't.

The higher profit returns and the larger fan base of console gamers seems to hook a giant wrench in your theory. To be fair, some games are better on PC and some are better on consoles.

DMC4 and action based games tend to be better on consoles for example, while FPS, MMOs, and RTS tend to be better suited for the keyboard and mouse control scheme.

Action based games like Dead Space tend to not do well on for PC sales, that is why extra incentive is not really thrown to the PC crowd, however, since it is easy to make a game for the PC and cheap for production, they might as well make a PC edition available to pad their sales figures.

They are doing this because the ps3 and expecially xbox 360 business is freaking bad compared to the PC.
PC rocks! The PC has just shown that PC, and us the PC gamers are real gamers! We don't need some "Special" suit to hide our a**. Those suits are for gamers tryin' to hide there sissy a**.

Sonyhater us PC gamers dont need a better suit because we play with the best controls I can understand why 360/PS3 would need it since everything game they get has to be dumbed down

€110 for a special edition? I can buy a DS Lite with that money and still have some leftover. A tad overprice for such little extra content that'll probably end up on the internet a week or so after the release. TeabagChampion: 60%? Seems a a little exagerated, don't you think? Excluding Nintendo franchises, the only great titles that are console exclusive seem to be Halo 3, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. Compared to the PC exclusives and ports like Crysis, Call of Duty, Bioshock, The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, Starcraft, Dawn of War, World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, etc. Sure computer gaming has many issues, but lack of great titles isn't one of them.

  • TeabagChampion

    Posted Oct 4, 2008 6:19 am PT

I agree with RonTorque, and thats the reason why I don't play computer games. Because only about 60% (if not less) of the great titles only come out for consoles. But I do like the fact that the guys over at EA made the suit differently for the XBOX360 and the PS3 version of Dead Space. I hope that the replay value on this game is fair because on most genre like Dead Space don't. I don't want it to be another one of those titles that you beat and then trade for credit at a EBX.

  • RonTorque

    Posted Oct 4, 2008 5:16 am PT

I totally agree with Hybrid.PC Gaming is never dead and will never die. It's the main element in the developing of games on PCs.It's just non-sense that games that are being developed, about 60% of them makes it to PC.with some exceptions to those who comes to consoles only.

Muttcake?? You got a high end video card and you say it looked like X-Box Oblivion? What were you doing? Playing on an old 15" monitor? Even with no mods at all, my PC was showing a far better picture than any X-Box/PS3 picture I've seen. Plus it got to use a vastly superior control system and didn't run into "Loading" every 3 minutes. And once you add all those player-made mods in, wow!

Anyway.... yeah, no freebee for the PC. But then, our copy is probably $10 cheaper.

PC gaming isnt dead but sadly its usually an afterthought for most devs, and very little attempt is made to optimise the games. I've been using a PC for gaming since, well, PCs existed and even I have given up and switched to a console. My last gfx card alone (which I bought solely to play Oblivion) cost me more than an xbox360+oblivion wouldve, and didnt run noticeably better. Poor.

There's no denying that for a proper online experience you can't beat a PC (especially for true dedicated-server fps games) but for everything else, a console does it better, and cheaper. Shame.

    >>console-deity:
If you think that PC gaming is almost dead, I'd say you've lost your mind. Like consoles, PCs have their own realm of gaming, which console will never excel at. Strategy games and MMORPGs are of this type, which RARELY find their way onto console, and rarely do well there. Not to mention the fact that those of us who invest the money into our PCs know that our machines can make these just as good or better than their console counterparts. The main advantage that console players seek, IMHO, is the fact that they can play all games on their consoles without fear of it not working.

I'm a long-time PC fan, and when given the choice between console and PC for multi-platform games, PC always takes the lead.

As for the story, EA's always been out to make more money for little gain for gamers. A great early example of this came with Battlefield 2142, when in-game advertising was added to the game to help make EA extra money. To be honest, if you want to spend all that extra moeny for a few extras, that's your money to waste. And as for special suits for console players, well, have fun with them. PC players will have fun with the game as it was meant to be, without improved suits

I noticed how EA is delaying PC versions of multi-platform games by two weeks... I now notice how they are giving console-based incentives to encourage the purchasing of console versions as well.
Is EA severely attempting to drive computer gamers to consoles?

360 is better for multi platform games, only today I've seen pissed PS3 owners complaining about the Bioshock demo framerate on their console. It's not up to the standard of the 360 version.

Same can be said for most PS3 games.

    ---Saint---

Are you retarded by any chance? Or just don't read any of the reviews on this site? It has been consistently commented on in recent reviews that the PS3 is more prone to slowdowns and the 360 is smoother, not to mention numerous mentions of bad aliasing on the PS3. So how do you justify getting the PS3 version solely for smoother gameplay? Go preach your fanboyism elsewhere please.
