Xbox 360 sales 'up 200 percent' in Europe

Mid-September price cut having the desired effect as Microsoft heralds increase in console purchases.

Microsoft's price-cutting strategy appears to be working for its flagship console. Xbox 360 prices were reduced in the US on September 5, taking the cost of the 60GB Pro version down to $299 and making the Arcade SKU (which has no hard drive) cheaper than the Nintendo Wii at $199. Microsoft UK followed suit, with a reduction on September 19 for the Arcade to £129.99 and the (now-60GB) Pro falling to £169.99.

Following the price cut in the US, Microsoft told Bloomberg it had seen a 100 percent increase in sales. The company has now announced that based on Chart Track figures from September 29, sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe over the previous two weeks increased by 214 percent. Microsoft also said that the figures showed it was outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 by two-to-one, but did not indicate how many units were actually sold.

Chris Lewis, Microsoft vice president, interactive entertainment business Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, "We've seen uplift in all countries in Europe and are confident that even at this rate of growth we can keep retail satisfied with a steady supply of consoles throughout the Christmas season."

Microsoft isn't the only company with reasons to be cheerful this week though. The latest UK all-formats chart shows that LucasArts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has held on to the number one position, followed closely by Nintendo's Wii Fit, which according to Chart Track had its third-best ever week of sales with a 75 percent rise on the previous week.

I could care less who really wins the war...Xbox has let me down when they quickly abondoned the first gen console. I have been playing since the early days of pong and have been through many consoles...I sadly saw the demise of SEGA a gaming console that had more potential than all combined. I purchased my Xbox when they first came out... built up a library that only many can dream about and played each and every game a thousand times...then the excitment hit when they introduced the 360...the articles read that this was going to be the all that ends all, but the key factor was Microsoft "telling" us that we do not need backward compatibility??? something I always dreamed of after owning just about every single console out there...Sony had always hit the money with BC. So I sat back...waiting to see how well the 360 was doing...no real games jumped out at me to give me that must have (since my dissapointment with HALO 2) and then there it was...all the screams and crys...what the hell?? my power button is flashing red lights??? I started seeing and reading about all these 360's getting this RROD...I say to myself "well...not gonna put myself through that" So as a year had passed still playing away on my Xbox (origional...that never saw a single problem) and figured it was time to make a move. I headed to my local EB game shop...Xbox in hand with the huge library of games and had to make the decission...what system would I buy??? There it was...right in front of me, it was so easy to make...PS3!! I had to, blu ray, BC, and so much more. It has been a year now since owning my PS3 and to this day still no problems...oh but wait, whats that??? 360's RROD's are getting worse...how could that be??? The machine that would end all others??? impossible!! Article after article, the amounts of 360's in for repairs... yet sales keep doubleing??? Then it hits me...Microsoft may have hit the nail on the head...just like the Wii did...what is it you ask??? simple!! The Wii only puts out a few machines at a time to keep the demand up...Microsoft makes sure its machine fails so that sales continue to grow... MARKETING!!! I have heard that people have just replaced as many as 5 Xbox 360's instead of waiting for theirs to be repaired... you think maybe that could account for the increase of machines??? Sony is still sitting repairless and all those who have purchased one have had no real need of concern, yet article after article claims that Sony is plumiting??

There needs to be more information regarding the sales as only half truths are being forced in our brains... I thought we the users, buyers the real voice of gaming decided what we want... Take the time and investigate the real truth... I do not hate the 360, I just can not put up with the crap of lies... I will wait to see what Microsoft does next in the next generation war, because if they can learn from this (oh wait... I just said the impossible..."learn") maybe the 720 will be the machine that ends all... and oh by the way... downloadable media is not the way to go, but you will see what happens when it fails.

I have a 360 (and a Wii... though I hardly ever use it). Much as I love my Xbox, and feel that it provides an excellent gaming experience, I think these price-cuts are essential to ensure the console remains attractive.

I echo the comments of another poster (I forget who...), that there's been very little to grab my interest for the 360 since Halo 3 (Orange Box, I think, deserves an honourable mention...). There've been two or three very entertaining titles released via Live Arcade, but I consider these only the 'icing on the cake' - if the premium titles being released for the 360 continue not to inspire, I fear the 360 will die within the next year.

On the matter of the PS3 - I'm trying not to buy one (I think owning all the consoles from one generation is excessive!), but I *am* trying to buy a Blu-ray player. And it's kinda hard to find a decent Blu-ray player for less than the price of a PS3...

I don't think that's necessarily so. The PS3 is selling far faster than the 360 ever did at a higher price point and with stiffer competition. No one ever claimed the 360 was a sales failure. Personally, I think the PS3 is a great value at $399.

Its amazing that they continue to sell as strongly as they due, especially with the RROD issue surrounding the console. Everyone of my friends have suffered that ill fate, but yet we all continue to love and support our 360. After having to send mine off for the 2nd time, I almost decided to give up and just play my PS3, but I couldn't see myself missing out on the Fables, Gears of Wars,Mass Effect etc..I imagine they could've been even more successful if it hadn't been for that RRod issue, seeing how "word of mouth" travels fast and probably persuaded others to buy a competitors product.I'm glad they put forth the 3yr warranty and hopefully they've put that issue to rest with the new batch of units.Kudos Microsoft.

You know, I'm not even sure that's true anymore. As I mentioned in my recent blog - I realized just recently that I haven't even bought a single 360 games since Halo 3 came out. Everything's else is either on the PS3, or I really don't feel like I'm missing out. It's such a change considering that it wasn't long ago that the 360 was the only console I played. Can't wait till Fable 2 and Gears 2 though. There's reason right there to dust off "ole blinky!"

That's interesting. Most industry analysts think the PS3 is the best console. PC Advisor magazine did an article a little while back saying the PS3 is now the worlds best console. I have to ask, have you ever even played a PS3?

Well duh, MS was of course going to sell more 360's with a price drop but up 214% was a bit higher then I would have guessed looking at the increase in North America. Still 360 is the single best gaming platform right now, trailed by Wii (it could be better with more real games and far less of that casual crap and shovelware), then we have the dieing PC market, and lastly that blu-ray player.

@ TheArcade. Yeah, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were all in the sights of that lawsuit. I wasn't referring to lawsuits like this - every successful company will have lawsuits like these ones, they can't really be avoided. You'll always give somebody some reason to sue. I was referring to anti-trust type lawsuits and anti-competitive behavior that have resulted in guilty verdicts. It was in response to another poster earlier who thought Microsoft was some sort of unfaltering god-company. We all know that's not even close to reality, although they aren't Satan either.

Talk about lawsuits; put your swords down for a minute, you guys need to read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immersion_v._Sony

Sony got their butts sued off by Immersion for that Rumble tech and Microsoft was about to catch it too but they thought smart to settle outside of court. According to the wiki Sony will be making lots more licensing payments until the end '09.

I never said MS was a shining beacon. I just pointed out the double standard most people have when it comes to them.

Imagine for example if 3-years ago MS had sold the 360 for a $450 dollar / unit loss. We ould have been buying the 60g for $150...and I have little doubt had MS done that they would have been slapped once again for unfair business practices and giving away product.

Yet that is exactly what Sony did and instead people say what a wonderful company they are for handing out such a great deal.

Yuck_too said "As for teh Sony DRM...lol...imagine the hoopla if it had been MS that did that exact same thing instead of Sony." Ok, that's kinda funny. We have no idea what MS has saddled us with, because they don't release their code. I'm sure there would be more concern if anyone was actually aware of what was going on behind the scenes.
As for the anti-trust issues, I concede that I may be wrong about Sony but I did attempt a search for news regarding Sony being found guilty of such practices and I found nothing. I found them articles about them being accused but never convicted. My point was simply to bring to people's attention that hey, MS has behaved very badly in the past. Denying it ever happened is just ridiculous. You probably remember the days when it was cool to hate Microsoft, when they were the enemy to all that was right and good? What happened? Suddenly we have this influx of MS defenders. Don't any of you remember what they did, the companies they ruined, the insidious means by which they tried to destroy their competition, the strong arm tactics against computer makers? No one can seem to forgive EA because they made a couple of bad decisions and released a handful of average games years ago, they're some sort of satanists and Microsoft is a shining beacon of all that's right and good? Please spare me.
@ Grantsplace2004. You haven't been paying attention. I'm a huge 360 fan and supporter. I've been dubbed an Xbot on more than a few occasions. What you'll is I won't stand for the uninformed usual Xbox fan rhetoric you see spewed over and over again, and I take issue with it because it muddies the waters of legitimate debate regarding gamer issues. MS has been found guilty of anti-competitive behavior not just in the US but across a few European countries as well, I wasn't wrong in that. My point wasn't simply to bash Microsoft; Sony, Nintendo and Sega have all had their issues (most successful companies have.) My issue was with gamer082009 and his comments making Microsoft out to be something they're not and comparing those critical of the company to conspiracy nuts. Talk about burying your head in the sand.
I'm not always critical of the 360, or of Microsoft. Even on this very forum earlier you'll see me praising the 360 as the fantastic console it is. I think serious gamers owe it to themselves to check out the 360's excellent offering now that the hardware issues are more reasonable. I suppose it's easier to paint me with the Sony fanboy brush though. As for me being abrasive and sarcastic - I can be sarcastic from time to time but I don't feel that I've been abrasive. My sarcastic responses are usually in response to direct attacks towards me, or towards facts that are easily verified if anyone bothered to check. That ticks me off. If you're going to come after me, at least have the decency to check your facts first. I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings though, and If I have been a bit callous in the past I do apologize. I love the community and debates on Gamespot and having been on the receiving end of some pretty nasty things from some posters I know I certainly didn't like the feeling.

You of all people should know I don't simply make up things, I used to think the same about you.

Sony has had Zero anti-trust lawsuits you say?

Heck they have lost a half dozen to the EU alone and even a few in their home country, even now they are looking at another $500 Million fine if found guilty based on their Beta Tape business tactics.

While MS might have been hit for larger total sums fact still remains Sony business practices it a lot more across all their ventures.

Rumor is they are now being investigated once again for Blu-ray backroom deals...all the typical unfair aspects of business virtually every large-scale company utilizes. After all it's about keep you in and the competition out.

As for teh Sony DRM...lol...imagine the hoopla if it had been MS that did that exact same thing instead of Sony...Sony got off so easy on that one...wonder why that was

darkride, everytime I see you on here, your always incredibly abrasive and sarcastic for seemingly no reason. I dont know why you feel the need to spew anti xbox and microsoft feelings all over every message board, but its kind of ridiculous. Microsoft being found guilty of anti-trust lawsuits "again and again" is not true. I count one time that they actually were found to be acting in an anticompetitive manner, and that was for the whole internet business, nothing to do with video games or anything else. They were punished accordingly and nothing else has come of it. Its obvious you feel some crazy loyalty towards sony but can you stop spreading anti msoft, pro sony propaganda all over the boards. It only makes it worse that you deny it constantly as well.

Really? Anti-trust lawsuits that they lost? Is that so? Because I've found, wait...let me count...zero.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has been found guilty again and again and has been forced to pay billions due to their anti-competitive behavior. Not quite the same thing as the hoopla about Sony DRM.

    @BLuFAlc0n...
As I stated before, I'm no fan boy, for ANY company, as I have bitter tastes from both Microsoft and Sony, as neither one have been smooth sailing, for me. But, I love games, and it does me no good to hold grudges against these behemoth, mega money companies, especially since nothing I, or anyone here, is going to change their ways, that's a fact. At 53, and being disabled, gaming means more to me than just some occasional fun, as I'm pretty much bed-ridden, and I spend at least 10 to 12 hours daily playing games, because I enjoy it, and also keeps my mind off of many things. So, I own 4 systems, my XBOX 1 being my favorite, but sadly they no longer make games for it, my PS2, which I have for the games that were made for it exclusively, and not the XBOX, my PS3, which was a gift, that I mainly use to play exclusives on, and the blu-ray player to watch movies on, and my 360, which I had given up on after 3 died on me, before the extended warranty came around, and now on my 4th that I bought when the price cut came, which I use to just to play games on. So, I get to play whatever games come out for both the 360 and the PS3, as well as, on occasion, I'll fire up my XBOX 1 and PS2, so I can play my favorites on both those last generation consoles, too. I am a single player, due to my disability, so I don't play online, and only use my free silver membership to scope out what might interest me, and same with my PS3. If after 3 dead 360s, had I been ignorant enough to not get a 4th, when the price cut came, and with it's extended warranty, along with Best Buy's additional warranty, I'd be missing out on some pretty awesome games, which I had bought for my previous 3 360s, those that are out now, and those that are on their way, which would be my loss, and Microsoft wouldn't even feel it. Same thing with my PS3, granted it was a gift, but I could have sold it on eBay along with the 2 games I had for it, because I was upset that there was not enough games for it, but then I'd miss out on the few, but still good games, they have now, are coming out with soon, and somewhere down the road. No, I think your hatred towards Microsoft is only hurting you, yourself, as you are missing out on some really great games, already out, and plenty still to come. Finally, you are not going to fix fanboyism, especially by preaching that Microsoft is evil. Set your hatred aside, as Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, will continue doing what they feel like doing, and just enjoy what all 3 have to offer, as it's a great time for gamers, and the competition will only make it better, trust me. Peace, and Happy Gaming, to ALL!

@ gamer082009. While I don't agree with BLuFAlc0n's rants, I hardly think Microsoft critics are akin to crazy conspiracy nuts. We know MS blackmails retailers and partners alike, why wouldn't they do it to developers? And unlike the crazy conspiracy theories that go around, we know MS is guilty as charged because they've been found guilty of such practices in countries the world over..again and again and again. It's not like this is just rumor, their anti-competitive practices are well documented. But that being said, come on. Who here among us hasn't vowed and conspired to "choke the life" from people that we were in competition with and then followed through rather than simply let our products speak for themselves? Haven't we all got a little "microsoft" inside of us?

People have this HUGE paranoia about Microsoft all the time, in fact it's on the same level as those crazy 9-11 conspiracy theorist! If you hate Microsoft and the 360 so much, and worse, feel it's evil, just stay clear of Microsoft altogether, but don't come here thinking you are going to save people, stop fanboyism, etc..., because you're wasting your time, really! On top of that it if the Wii does hit supply constraints again it very well could be people walk in planning to buy a Wii and end up walking out with a less expensive 360. Point is the 360 is sitting in excellent position going into this holiday season.

Here we go again with wild rants....

Anywho, the sales numbers aren't surprising. A price drop always spurs an immediate sales spike. It'll taper off again until the holidays and then it will pick up again. What I'm curious to see is how the PS3 VS 360 sales go this holiday season being that the 360 lineup is easily weaker than the PS3 this year (not fanboying it up here, it's true. Last year the 360 had a much better lineup).

Well I hope this forces all the others to drop their prices as well. I'm more interested in the games coming for the PS3 than those for the 360 at this point.

That's quite a jump. Good for MS, and for devs.

Things do look like they've started to slow a bit for Sony. They've still sold over a million consoles more than the 360 this year, but that was 1.5 million consoles more than the 360 in July so they've lost some of their ground. It might take them a little longer than they anticipated to overtake the 5 million console lead the 360 has.
Still, when you look at those numbers it's clear that the PS3 is selling better from it's launch than the 360 ever did. The 360 managed to sell 6 million consoles in it's first year and already that head start is being chipped away at. This holiday season will be crucial for both consoles.
