PopStar Guitar gets tracked

Songs from Rihanna, Maroon 5, Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus confirmed to appear in upcoming fake-instrument rhythm game for PS2, Wii.

With the rhythm game genre becoming increasingly crowded thanks to the massive success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, developers need something to separate their efforts from the crowd. As the title of PopStar Guitar for the Wii and PlayStation 2 suggests, XS Games is looking to make a niche for itself by steering away from the well-navigated hard rock waters favored by Activision and MTV Games' hit series.

Today the publisher announced a handful of tracks from the game, including a pair of Maroon 5 songs and cuts from Rihanna, The Jonas Brothers, and Hannah Montana's not-so-secret-identity Miley Cyrus. The game's full set list will feature more than 50 pop ditties, all of which can be played on the PS2 using any five-button guitar game controller. For the Wii version, XS is producing its own "AirG" controller attachment that snaps onto the Wii Remote to allow for air guitar heroics.

PopStar Guitar is set for release in November. The specific tracks announced today are listed below:

"Shut Up and Drive"--Rihanna
"SOS"--The Jonas Brothers
"See You Again"--Miley Cyrus
"Wake Up Call"--Maroon 5
"Makes Me Wonder"--Maroon 5

Hmmm i disagree with the majority of things said here tbh especially IXIWhistIXI's
1 you probably dont work and live on a childrens adventure camp like me so you probably dont come across too many 14 yo girls and i'll tell you they do like wii games and will buy this! not to mention older and younger girls AND MALES i will buy this i much prefer Pop to rock which is the problem i have with GH3 great game rubbish songs (OPPINION) it looks easier but i doubt the hard mode and harder (hopefully) will be that easy that it wont even challange expert GHers
so before we all start the wild conjecture based on a few screenies and a video or two lets atleast wait for a hands on review?

So it's all the crappy hit songs put into a terrible GH knock off. I think the funniest thing is that apparently XS games thinks it will be a hit because the song selection isn't rock music.
They're forgetting one important aspect...good gameplay.
It looks like they're aiming it at 14 year old girls. Last time I checked, 14 year old girls aren't very interested in videogames. It's one thing to come out of nowhere with a knock off to make some quick cash, but it's just sad when you come from no where and your first game is a dumbed down knock off that nodoubt will go down in flames but thinking that your slight change of an element (in this case pop music) will make it a smash hit.

LAME!! gives us rhythm gamers a bad image.

This is a shameless imitation of Guitar Hero and Rock Band and should be scrapped. For the young'uns, there's this thing called GHWT's Beginner difficulty.

While I enjoy the rhythm game genre, this stuff is starting to give guitar players even more reason to hate us.

weisguy119, "pop" is a type of music now... music that is popular is not "pop music". pop music has made its own genre.

(lol..kinda sounds like im trying to say pop isn't popular)

to be honest, i've always wanted more "pop" with my Gh or RB. but i'm not sure if it warrants a separate purchase.

It just looks like a dumbed down Guitar Hero.
It would be better if it worked with the existing GH guitars for Wii.

I've never heard of XS games before... They are probably just trying to ride the music-game wave.

You guys forget kids play games to. It may not be the regular rated M games that you guys are use to but it will sell to the younger crowd. Also everyone isn't into heavy metal.

i think they are targeting the wrong demographic here. most people that play guitar hero and the like are not young enough to be into this kind of music.

  • greedom

    Posted Sep 10, 2008 4:44 pm PT

I guess it would be good for.. I dunno, kids who are into that kind of music but I doubt it will be taken seriously or become competition for the ones already on the market.

  • weisguy119

    Posted Sep 10, 2008 4:42 pm PT

There's clearly a market for the music. I'm sure there will be a market for the game as well. Not every video game nerd (and I include myself in that) is a metalhead. It's not my kind of music, but "pop" music is short for popular music. Popular = sales.

Tubba; its the wii and the ps2, were you expecting god of war 2 in a rhythm game by XS. Uhhh, no. anyways, this game will sell, but it will not cater to the same crowd that GH/RB cater to. More to the crowd they cater to on the Wii (the family, etc). Young teen girls who enjoy listening to (god knows why) Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Bros.

no. Guitar Hero and Rock Band copying each other is bad enough, this game is like the wannabe that wants to be better than both by doing something neither would do because it's stupid.
