Head Coach heads up PSN releases

Football management sim for PS3 now downloadable for $49.99; other releases include new Pure demo, Haze expansion, weekly Rock Band tracks.

Sony's weekly update to the PlayStation Network online store is live, and it features the first third-party downloadable edition of a retail PS3 game.

That title had previously been expected to go to Burnout Paradise, which will launch this fall, but another EA title, NFL Head Coach 09, has claimed the honor instead. Already released in stores on its own and as part of the Madden NFL 09 collector's edition bundle, NFL Head Coach 09 takes a more management-minded approach to the game of football, allowing gamers to work the front office instead of the backfield. Like the retail version of the game, NFL Head Coach 09 sells online for $49.99.

While Head Coach is the only full game debuting on PSN this week, there are a few more notable releases in addition to the expected array of video clips and wallpapers. The fourth "episode" of Sony's Qore digital magazine launched, with a minigame and exclusive access to the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift demo (expected September 11) for 30 days. Qore is available for $2.99 an issue, or $24.99 as part of an annual subscription.

Beyond those offerings, the PSN is also playing host to a free demo for the Disney Interactive racer Pure, a $9.99 "Destruction" multiplayer add-on pack for Free Radical's first-person shooter Haze, and a trio of Rock Band tracks from artists that played at last weekend's Penny Arcade Expo. Jonathan Coulton's "Skullcrusher Mountain," The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets' "Shhh...," and MC Frontalot's "Livin' at the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" are available for $.99 each, or $2.99 when purchased together as PAX Pack 1.

So, does anyone actually want this? And if they do, would they really be willing to pay $50? It had to be one of the most boring games I've ever played. It was just Madden, except you don't play.

This would be unnessesary if the PS3 wasnt able to get new harddrives. A lot of you are talking about the size factor...but you forget that with PS3 you can buy a 500GB harddrive. and put it into your console. Instead of having that 60Gbs or 40GBs. PS3 RULES!

Even though I don't like digital distribution, I think it's a profitable option, but only as an option. The fact that R&C: Quest for Booty and Siren: Blood Curse are only coming out on Blu-ray in Europe, and not in the US, and stuff Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online isn't either is just plain stupid. As a side note, they gotta roll out pretty much every PSP game on the PSN. If it's more then a year old, it should cost $10-$20, but if it's new, you can price it at $30 or $40.

PSN has no limits in terms of download size... Which I think is good, for saving fuel price

I didn't know Disney made pure, it's a lot of fun. Go figure, if that game has a good multi-player I might pick it up.

to the claw well its getting there soon the psn cards will be available at small retail stores and some medium ones like 7 eleven and rite aid. I am sure it will gradually move up as sales increase and demand for the psn cards. I know a lot of people on the psn don't have credit cards but really want those goodies like the movies and such.

Why exactly would someone waste so much hard drive space if NFL Head Coach is the same price in a disc based version? Considering they save on manuals and casing AND eating more of the consumers' HDD space, I'd say they should consider discounting the PSN version.

Without PSN cards being easily available, this doesn't help me much.

Pax Pack is broken, do not download it. Only download Shhh... and Skullcrusher Moutain separately. MC Frontalot's song is broken. I repeat. Do not download it.

NFL Head Coach has got to be the worst game I have ever played. I can't believe EA is trying to sell that turd for 50 bucks.
