PAX 2010 descends on Boston

Penny Arcade Expo's East Coast offshoot event heads to Massachusetts in two years.

The 2008 Penny Arcade Expo officially opened its doors to throngs of gaming and geek-culture enthusiasts today in Seattle, Washington. According to showrunners Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins--creators of the irreverent webcomic that gave birth to the event--this year's open-to-the-public gaming exhibition is poised to smash the previous year's record attendance mark of 39,000, if preregistration numbers are any indication.

Aware that the gaming show has struck a chord with the gaming community, the Penny Arcade duo announced earlier this month that a sister show would be launching for East Coast audiences beginning in 2010. Providing additional details on that event as part of an interview today, Krahulik and Holkins have confirmed for GameSpot that the East Coast show is being planned for Boston, Massachusetts.

As previously reported, Penny Arcade has enlisted the help of Reed Exhibitions (the team behind the New York Comic-Con) to handle the logistics of the new show. At the time of its announcement, Holkins stressed that he and Krahulik will still run the show, as well as "determine all the panels, choose where it takes place, select the bands, pretty much everything."

Oh dear--all those people with their light-up devices with wires? The local law enforcement will probably think it's World War III starting! :-/

I don't think so, Mystok. There are plenty of trains from New York to Boston as well as buses. Casuals and hardcores will make the trip in plentiful number because conventions are just that fun.

Besides, they know people in Boston. There's 2k Boston, people at MIT (they came all the way over here a year or so back to do a talk where they foreshadowed the possibility of having it in the area), and a number of others. Actually, Harmonix is also over here. They're headquartered out of the People's Republic of Cambridge.

Yes, yes. New York is the big apple and all that stuff but Boston ain't such a half bad city. It's wicked smaht and you got places to pahk the cah. I just hope they put it at the Hynes. That convention center is HUGE, there's a game stop nearby, and it's at the bloody Prudential center/coply place. It's a mall connected to the convention center as well as a hotel. . or three.

Made plans to go with my girl. Going to try and catch a Sox game if the time is right. Furthering my plans to see as many ball parks as possible in my life time.

This is awesome. I can't wait.

why not New York? I guarantee there's enough money and interest to rent out a place there. Not a lot of people in the metropolitan areas on the east coast actually own cars, so except for the die-hard gamers who practically need to attend, they'll definitely be losing potential attendees

It'll probably won't be the same time of the year as the Seattle PAX.

yeah but they wont BE there because they will be at the Seattle pax right? I mean, they cannot be in two places at once so they have that going against them. It feels like the Seattle one will still take priority.

So do I! Woo! Go Red Sox! And Penny Arcade. I can only assume it'll be held at the Hynes convention center as that's where Anime Boston is and it's just a hot location. Right next to the Pru and Copley place and all that.
