Red Baron takes wing September 18

Sierra Online's WWI aerial arcade fighter cruises onto Sony's PlayStation Network next month.

With Activision Blizzard dubbing Sierra Online a "non-strategic business unit," the future looks grim for the former Vivendi Games subsidiary. However, though the megapublisher has a mind to unload the label, Sierra Online has at least a few more projects under its wing, and is prepping to push one such project out of the nest next month.

The online-centric publisher said this week that Red Baron Arcade will be available for download through Sony's PlayStation Network beginning on September 18. Pricing information was not revealed. However, Sierra Online did note that a free demo of the game that features online play for up to eight will be released day and date with the full version.

A period piece, Red Baron Arcade lets gamers enlist as a member of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen's elite fighter-plane unit, battling to advance the cause of Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War I. The game features "WWI-themed" aircraft, and players can either test their mettle against computer-controlled opponents or online in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag modes for up to eight.

The old red Baron from PC was amazing!!! Never saw cool plane games after that! Wonder what happened... before the graphics weren´t so sharp, but the fun was much higher! Maybe its just us getting old... and not having that same feeling about games anymore...

IGN didn't rate the PC version too well, 5.7/10. But I suppose it could turn out well.

I've never played Red Baron, but I hear good things. Hopefully it turns out well.

Maybe the Sierra name can revert to Ken Williams ownership one of these days.

One of the greatest Xbox experiences I ever had was capture the flag on Crimson Skies. Get 8 people together for a WWI aircraft capture the flag game and it would be just as good or better. Give it a chance people! PSN is coming ALIVE!

I highly doubt this will do any good for the company. I will not be surprised the next time this company has a story, it'll be for lay offs or closings.

This sounds closer to the Red Baron that was on the Sierra Network (later the Imagination Network) than the original Red Baron game. The TSN Red Baron was basically a multiplayer-only trimmed down version of the solo boxed game. You mainly just picked opponents and engaged in a dofights, no campaigns. If I recall correctly, the controls and sim engine were simplified a bit, but still weren't the crappy arcade-style we've seen from console 'flight sims' over the years. All in all, if it's an upgraded version of TSN's Red Baron (maybe with some Battlefield like stats and unlockables... would be fun to start off in Eindeckers and work your way up to Dr.I's and DVII's), it would still rock, but I definitely agree that we need a good, at least semi-realistic boxed Red Baron type game (or even a little more arcadey, but still sim-ish with style Wings). Instead of developers giving us knife fights with jets, it would be so easy to go back to a time when fights really were within throwing range.

the original Red Baron was one of the very first computer games I ever played, and it holds a veyr special place in my gaming library.

Even with that I don't think I'll be picking this up... mostly 'cause I don't have a PS3. I wish flight sims were as popular as they used to be, I really miss them.

Bah, they need to remake the classic Red Baron -- into a flight sim not an arcade game.

If Small Rockets isn't making it, I'm a bit skeptical.

This had better be like the original game and not some arcade garbage. If it is garbage it shouldn't be called Red Baron.

NVM finished reading it, its garbage.
