The Sims 3 moves in February 20

EA's surefire best-selling life simulator takes root on the PC next year; collector's edition detailed.

A perennial cash cow for Electronic Arts, the Sims franchise hit the celebrated 100 million milestone earlier this year, generating $4 billion for the company in the process. As part of the Leipzig Games Convention today, EA announced that the The Sims 3, the first all-new installment in the life-simulation franchise since 2004's The Sims 2, would begin uttering incoherent phrases to PC gamers on February 20.

With Will Wright's Maxis studio prepping for Spore's September 7 launch, the Sims 3 is being developed by EA's dedicated Sims Studio at its Redwood Shores headquarters. Making the most noticeable impact between The Sims 3 and the slew of spin-offs and expansions of previous Sims titles is the all-new graphics engine, which EA promises will bring to life such locales as beaches, mountains, and civic centers.

Delving under the hood, The Sims 3 offers players the ability to customize individual sims by allotting them five unique character traits, from a choice of brave, artistic, kleptomaniac, clumsy, paranoid, and romantic. EA notes that Sims constantly evolve as the game progresses, which will add diversity to encounters. Other new features packed into Sims 3 include a Create-a-Sim mode and short- and long-term goals, where players have the choice to "fulfill their destiny, giving them lifetime happiness and rewards or not!"

In addition to dating The Sims 3, EA also detailed the game's collector's edition. Though no price was provided, the collector's edition will include The Sims 3, a Sims Plumbob USB Drive, an exclusive in-game Italian-style sports car, a cheats guide, and The Sims 3 Plumbob stickers pack.

Considering the massive slow down that the Sims 2 could cause (and even more so with it's expansions), how Sims 3 performs is the main thing I'm looking at.

I don't know I get bored of sims 2 since the world around your sims never changes. But with sims 3 having the whole neighborhood advancing at once it should maybe be a bit more interesting then its predecessor.

I agree Darkreaper_1; I honestly don't see much improvement in the sims 3 even though i've been a religious sims player since the beginning... I'll stick to the sims 2

Any time a "Collector's Edition" features a sticker pack, you've gotta wonder if it's worth it...

looking forward to the game, but not the collectors edition :/ sounds a bit crap.

  • CIFI10

    Posted Aug 21, 2008 11:46 am PT

i'll rent it, not buy it
looks like it'll be different in few ways, but still it'll be an improvement

Frankly i'm not that bothered about the Sim 3. I've spent too much time and money on the Sims 2 to simply ditch it all. I think the Sims 2 is still a great game and i can only see marginal improvements in Sims 3.

Think i'll pass and just keep playing Sims 2...

This game is looking good. Hopefully it'll be as good as TS2 and it's expansions. I am looking forward to this game though. The video and screenshots look nice.

I'm glad the release date was bumped back a bit as well.

ivanKavinsky- "Anyone else notice how they said "five unique character traits" and then listed six?"

um...each sim gets 5 character traits, but there will obviously be more than just 5 traits, or every sim would be identical

  • fiercedeity901

Idk bout sims 3...imma HUGE fan of the sims...but from the pics and videos...it just looks a bit too different and doesn't look like it will feel like the sims too much

i hope it turns out great...but i fear it won't

it seems like the sims 2 and 3 are going to be two completely different games
