160GB PS3 Uncharted bundle due in November

SCEA announces new $499 limited-edition package that includes higher-storage console, Naughty Dog's action adventure, DualShock 3, and PAIN voucher; $399 80GB now shipping.

This morning at the Leipzig Games Convention, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced it would release a new 160GB PlayStation 3 in Europe for €449 ($660). Within minutes, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced the model--which boasts twice the hard drive space as the current 80GB SKU--would also be making its way to North America, albeit in a different form.

$499 gets you all this.

While the European model will come with €70 ($102) in downloadable content localized to the user's territory, the US and Canadian model will be introduced November via a limited edition bundle. Costing $499 in both territories, the package will include the 160GB PS3, a DualShock 3 controller, Naughty Dog's acclaimed adventure game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and a voucher for the downloadable game Pain.

In a statement, SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton explained the rationale behind the new PS3 model. "As [the] PlayStation Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," he said. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand."

Sony also had news today for those unswayed by the 160GB PS3 package's offerings--or those simply unable to afford it or wait until November. The company said that this week, the new $399 80GB PS3 had begun shipping to stores. Announced at the E3 Media & Business Summit last month, the console is $100 cheaper than the previous 80GB PS3 SKU, but no longer offers software-based backward compatibility for PlayStation 2 games. SCEA reps confirmed for GameSpot that the 160GB model would also be bereft of PS2 game support.

    lonnyakapimp i agree that sony should fight for what thiers...i mean they arent even doing anything about the fact the microsoft literally "stole" some major ps3 exclusives game ( gta 4, final fantasy 13) but about the backwards computability i think that no one really uses it that much i mean basically EVERYONE has a ps2 by now and plus ps3 is capable of much more than ps2 games now. So i think sony did do the smart thing to not put backwards compatability because they are spending too much money on barley anyone uses...but yes i do agree sony does need to defend their games

    Sony is awsome I love and enjoy playing there games, but why are you letting Microsoft take over your thunder, I feel like you should fight for whats yours (Final Fantasy 13, Tekken 6,etc) Oh, and please don't let them take Metal Gear Solid 4 please, and I really think you should put backwards copatibility on all of your PS3's. Because like I said in the beginning I love and enjoy playing ALL of your games and Ijust feel like not having backwards compatibility is really taking away instead of giving

    They Should drop this bundle for the U.S because now this bundle is trying to come out in the begining of jan. they should just come out with God Of War 3 bundle w/ resistance 2 or Killzone 2 and a dualshock 3. wouldn't hurt them to throw in an HDMI cord And sony is not losing money. if they loose money on their ps3 then they gain it by their other electronics ex: t.v blu ray plyr computers etc.

    For all of those you kids that are wondering why no backward compatibility, well here are two reasons that just poped in my mind, and I bet that if you took 5 seconds to think about it instead of one minute to write here, the world would be a much better place:

    1. How do you think they were able to drop $100+ in price? The removed the extra work for them so it doesn't have ps/ps2 compatibility and only 2 USBs.

    2. Why would they want to make something that read all 3 system formats when they are still selling PS2s? It's all about the money. If people could buy something that read every format out there how would they make money off PS2s? Cus they are cheaper? Lol I think not.

    As simple as that.

    I agree that the most important differance between the models is BC, but to try an lower the price wouldnt be resonable. Sony is already losing Hundreds on every PS3 they sell. Hundreds.
    And removing blue-ray is impossible. that would make a PS3 without games. all PS3 games are on blue-ray format, so if you want to get buy a PS3 without the ability to play PS3 (after complaining about no PS2 games) then fine by me, but not many other people will.
    well im not actaully sure how much sony loses on each PS3, but they do lose money.

    jjmc3...Sony is hooking on to Touch Screen tech late??? Anyway, why didn't they make this a RFOM bundle...maybe it would have sold more units, alot of people have already played uncharted. It's kind alike Micro$oft releasing a PGR 3 console. O.o

    there's just too many versions of the ps3!... how about they fix the 40 gigs many freezing and glitching problems?.... i sold my 20 gig jap one and got the 40 gig u.s. release and now this one freezes more than alaska!

    wow, I cant believe they said that. no B/C. Yep Sony just screwed themselve's bigtime. The first thing I did when I needed more space on my HDD was, Backup my stuff to an external HDD, Go to bestbuy and buy a 200gb sata 2.5" HDD for less then a $100, install it, format it, and restore my profile. Now I have a 200gb PS3. Man I'm glad I bought the 80gb (MotorStorm Limited Edition).

    it should be like an LG Shine, where its the whole touch screen, L and R button on either corner, and then it slides up and the ps3 conrtoler game pad is there (obviosly not a acctualy controler)

    I got my PS3 80 gig at christmas and I can play all my PS one,two and three games fine. I like my ps3 alot, although it broke twice and i had to ship it in (for free ) but I think if Sony wants to start making some serious money, they should recall the psp 3000 and make a psp touch/psp 2.

    That's a lot of space, but I would be willing to trade it for backwards compatibility. I'm holding out on buying a PS3 until they bring back BC. There are still tons of games in the PS2 library I've yet to play all the way through and I love revisiting PS1 games like FF7 and TM2.

    And my response is that I will be "bereft" of a PS3 until they change this deficit.

    anyways - how long do you expect them to keep selling PS2s? Supporting them??? We need BC because so many games flooded the PS2 market that people are still working through the immense library. I still have at least 10 games I've yet to get started on, even though some of them were purchased years ago!

    Sony can't be that stupid not to realize that a bigger hard drive is not going to offset the price drop strategy of Microsoft's Xbox. They have to reinstitute BC, lower the ridiculous price - perhaps they should even consider making a non-blu-ray model if it's that hard to find a way to drop the price? Oh, they wouldn't do that - because everyone would buy it, developers would start making more games for it - and their whole Blu-Ray campaign would go out of the window.

    All that money pumped into winning the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray war, and it hasn't sold them 5 units. How pathetic.

    I kind of see why tons of fans would be angry at no BC, i myself was mad that their discontinuing the BC 80GB.
    But then i thought... don't we all have our old PS2's from days old?

    They're more scratch resistant because a scratch on a Blu-Ray disc has more of an impact than a scratch on a DVD. If it's got 5-10 times the data on the same amount of physical space, a scratch is going to kill off 5-10 times more data.

    Maybe you just don't buy games good enough that you want to replay them? Backwards compatibility is a deal breaker for me. There's several PS2 games I haven't been able to play and I'm still playing my PS1 games as recently as yesterday.

    Sony, i have just red some comments(lots of them actually) and NONE and i mean NONE iv red is ascing for more space, instead most, including me, want bc! sony, why wont you listern to us and give us what we want? all we want is bc!! is that to much to ask? just put in a damn chip or sumtin that can read ps2 games and most of us are happy! is it really that hard to do it? jeez who needs so much space anyways?

    I'm sorry, why is this still an issue? If you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2. From my own experience: Number of PSone Games played on my PS2: 0, Number of Xbox games I played on my 360: 0, Number of Gamecube games I played on my Wii: 0, Number of PS2 games I played on my PS3: 2. Don't you buy new consoles to play new games? Is it just me?

    Sonys smart for releasing multiple version of ps3 so noobs like you who dont own a ps3 will think "wow! its loaded, its time". I pretty sure they will continue doing this just to get more attention for the ps3. A great marketing strategy sony.

    What the heck. I bought the 40 gig ps3 for £300. They're now selling the 80 gig for £300. For an extra 58 pounds they are going to sell the 160 gig.. For under £50 you can buy 250 GB hard drives that fit inside the ps3 and work perfectly. The only attraction in this offer is the 55 pounds of downloadable content which still doesnt add up and I for one dont purchase downloadable content anyway...Before anyone starts shouting at me I love sony and I'm not some 'ranting fanboy' but this is just a rip.

    Sony is not the only one look at Microsoft lets see what we got the 1.core 2. PRO. 3. ELITE 4. ARCADE 5. 20gig and 6. 60 gig now lets look at the PS3 1. 20 gig 2. 60 gig 3. 80 gig 4. 40 gig 5. 80 gig (with out backward compatibility) 6. 160 gig. See both MS and sony have the same amount of console's versions so quit campaign.

    I think Sony is eliminating Back-Compat. because the PS2 still sells well and will grab many people into buying both. They keep changing the Hardware to the point I think people are waiting for an even greater offer. Before you know it another "Slim" Unit will be released.

    i upgraded my ps3 to 250 gig and payed only 100$ no need to buy this one buy 40 gig for 400 and upgread it to whatever space u need and it will be 100$ cheaper

    Hey, I was wondering if the PS3 160GB will be limited in only North America or is it a limited version in a all?     No 160GB model for Australia but Europe only says 1 thing. European PSN Movie store incoming. But it looks like it'll be a while till Australia still gets it.. When they announce the 160GB model for Australia, you know the video store isn't far away!

    Agree with you. Or better yet, why not take that money & start securing 3rd party exclusives for once? Even if it has to be timed. I think that they should've only had the 60 GB as the only SKU model from the beginning, instead of the 20 GB & all of the ther models after the 60 GB. I'm pretty sure that they would've saved themselves tons of money haven't they bought out many multiple SKU's. Plus why for the love of pete, did they get rid of software emulation for PS2 games? It would've cost them next to nothing to have that feature in.

    And they're wondering why they're losing to the 360 & whining about FF13 being multiplatform. They need to hire people like me so that I can show them some real business tactics.

    ...I've definitely only filled 30Gb of my 360 Elite Storage.

    The lack of backwards compatibility is baffling. So this means, for example, if i wanted to play all the MGS games back to back, I would need a PS2 and PS3???

    Sony is giving the consumer less and less. Uncharted is now an ~$20 game. So, we're paying $80 for a bigger hard drive, but no backwards compatibility. Now, I haven't been following the PS3 saga until recently as what I'm mainly interested in is getting a BC PS3, but people are saying there is no web browser? Sony what are you smoking - I have a Dreamcast with a web browser. You're going to tell me I can get onto the web with my Dreamcast that I bought on Ebay for $50 but I can't browse with a $500 PS3? The EE chip has got to be so dirt cheap to manufacture now (slims are selling for $129 or less new) that it doesn't make sense not to put it into the PS3.

    I think we will survive without BC as you can easily buy a slim today to future-proof yourself, but to be honest who wants to pay $500 for a console that doesn't have it?

    @RoboRooster/killzone_gamer: Yes, of course I realize that the PS2 has a head start on the PS3, and the PS3 will probably have a few more decent games coming out in the next year or two. But even if it does, as I said, a bunch of the ones I would be interested in - and I can't speak for other people, of course - look to be multiplatform, which wouldn't offer me much incentive to buy a new (and still quite expensive) PS3 if my current one broke, especially if I now *also* have to buy a PS2 in order to play all my old games. That's like adding $100 onto whatever the price of the PS3 I choose to buy is. Several years down the road, the game line-up may cause my opinion to change, but who knows... maybe they'll replace the BC by then as well.

    My point is just that it's just incomprehensible that they'd effectively play their two systems against each other like this - *especially* when they're playing a monumentally-successful system against a far less successful one. With backwards comptibility, they send a message of, "Hey, come buy a PS3, you won't lose all your PS2 games in the process! Come on, join us in the next generation!" Without it, they send a message of, "Hey, buy both our systems and give us as much money as you possibly can! >" Ultimatums do not happy customers make.

    They obviously scrapped BC (the EE chip) because they wanted to reduce production costs and eventually removed even software emulation in order to 'encourage' people to buy PS2s for it's respective games. =/ What I don't get is why they had to also remove 2 usb ports and the card reader; did they want to even further reduce production costs? If they did (which they obviously have from what it seems) then that's pretty lame on their part... I mean, not everyone was able to get the early SKUs because they didn't have enough money, so while waiting for a price drop or waiting until they have enough money to buy one they essentially got screwed over... -_-' Well, let's just hope for some sort of software update for the PS3 to at least give users some BC. =/ (I doubt it will happen though, at least, not while the PS2 is around... -_-')
